Olympus Pen D3 Manual | Take a Photo, Load Film, Batteries, Double Exposures, and Flash Use

The Olympus Pen D3 half-frame viewfinder camera represented the end of the long line of Olympus ultra-compact half-frame viewfinder cameras. The line ended on a high note with the D3 being a spectacular camera with fantastic optical performance. The ultra-fast 32mm f/1.7 lens is a bit impractical on a viewfinder camera, but the over all optical performance, when the lens is used well, delivers fantastic results. This video covers the camera's layout and goes over all the functions and features needed to use the camera to take photos.

Today I have received a D3 from ebay. I am very impressed with the design and build quality. I actually prefer this camera to my Pen F which I sold. This is because it is smaller and also the leaf shutter is much quieter. This is a real gem.

i use a small O ring around my battery to make it fit snug but I love my d3 and use it almost every day

That's a good solution with most cameras, but if there's no contact spring in the battery chamber it won't work.

This was very helpful, especially the bit explaining the lens. The little zooming lever on the lens on my camera got stuck and now only goes between infinity and 5m. Do you think i accidentally triggered some factory setting/lock or is it something that needs repair?

The only half frame experience I have is with the Nat Geo binocular camera 😂 I did pick up a cheap DeJur Petri Compact on a whim, which has a cool looking red badge and green viewfinder window. Unfortunately the shutter is sticky, not quite sure how to open it. I've wanted a D2 for a while, as it's usually more affordable than the F or D3.

Half frame is fun! For the petri, if you remove the front cell and use some 91% isopropyl or, if that doesn't work, Ronsonol or similar lighter fluid on a cotton swab and fan the leaves and around the leaves that might help. Firing the shutter one any working speed might also help when using the solvents as that will work them into the shutter mechanism and hopefully loosen the thick grease if that's the issue.

Thanks for the great review! I've been debating whether to get a Canon Demi EE17 (about 80 bucks with a broken meter; 150, fully functional), Pen D3 (110, fully functional), or a Fujica Half (50 with a broken meter), really hard to choose. Which one would you go for? I plan to use Sunny 16, by the way, if the meter's not working.

I would always go for a fully functional camera unless the camera with the dead meter has a full manual mode. I don't have any familiarity with the Canon or Fujica, but both have good reputations.

Hi! I’ve had one for 5 months and it all worked perfectly! But last time I loaded a film and wanted to take some pictures, when I turn the film advance dial it activates the shutter immediately. Do you maybe know why that could be happening?

Hmm. That sounds like a mechanical fault. It will likely need a professional repair. Most likely, a catch or can is misaligned or damaged.

Oh gosh, I don't know. I had a press-on lens cap that came with this. I'm guessing the filter thread is 43mm, but you'll want to doublecheck that.

I bought a d3 from a thrift store today. It still had film it in and was on the last photo. great! I thought. So I rewound the spool (yes I pressed the button on the bottom). then opened it to find out the film was still exposed. Turns out the winding wheel is stuck and I do not know how to fix it. I have ee2 so I dont see it as that big of a deal. But if I even want to sell it I want to actually see it function. Any help?

Do you mean the rewind wheel was stuck or the film advance wheel? For the rewind wheel, it shouldn't be as that's a mechanical linkage. It's more likely that the film broke inside the canister. To check that, when the film is out, see if rewinding has any effect on spinning the rewind forks. For the advance, that wouldn't turn until the shutter is fired. The best advice I have beyond that is just to verify that it all works with no film in the camera and the back of the camera removed. I'm guessing you've tried that, or would probably get to it pretty soon. Let me know how all of that goes and that may result in some ideas.

I took the film out and tried to spin the advance wheel. that is stuck. pressing the shutter button doesn't help. it feels lose as if there is no pressure. The indicator of the film moves a bit when trying the advance while but neither really move. At least it came with a roll of film that expired in 2006. I'm using that one in my Canon Ae-1 now. @@DavidHancock

@@KajiRider1997 Got it. Something is jammed. Sometimes you can luck out and if you take the bottom plate off and look for any parts that wiggle when you try the shutter or advance, you might find one that, moving it manually, unjams the camera. I sold my D3 a long time ago, so I can't check and see if I can recommend anything inside the camera.

Hmm. It should not do that. Is the button jammed and the shutter not firing at all? What happens when you advance the film?

With a battery, everything can be used. As for the features, I think this video outlines all of them to the best of my ability.

@@jackfruit95 IIRC, having sold this camera a long time ago, it has limited or no usability. I try to remember to include that data when discussing batteries in the videos, though I don't bat 1000 in that regard.

My best idea would be to use isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab around the ring a few times and see if that unsticks it. If not, check with the Fix Old Cameras channel. He may know.
