Wow Rob, this is an informative video for many Olympus shooters. I was already aware of these issues, but many are not. The focus clutch thing is something that has to drive Olympus/OM Systems nuts -- no telling how many people have returned cameras as defective due to this one issue. I bought my E-M1x from Olympus as a 'Refurb', and I am convinced it was a return over some issue like this -- it looked brand new when I received it, and had only 236 shutter clicks on it -- I've not had a moment of trouble with it. Another default setting that drives me nuts, personally, is the 'EVF Auto Switch' function. I instantly turn that off on any Olympus body I have. If I want to use the LCD, a simple button press turns it on and off. Thanks for all your helpful and informative videos.

Hello Rob -for 4:28 - after updating to firmware 1.6 the behavior changed. In firmware 1.6 the set home no longer brings the AF target mode to the set mode, but rather just bring the focus point to the center or home position, without changing the current AF target mode. Please let me know if you also run into this when you update. I know this is a relatively old video but I had to find this video to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.

Useful. A couple of annoying things (for me): 1. The green square indicating the focus point is difficult to see on the OM1 (compared to the previous models), in particular in single point size. This typically occurs when I use the joystick to move around the focus point on green plants. -- Is there a way to enhance the visibility? Thicker lines, change color? 2. When moving around the single point sized focus point, it moves in big jumps. Is it possible to change this so that it moves (slower, but) in smaller steps?

Having recently bit the bullet, as we say, and sold a load of little used cameras and lenses to buy the OM-1, i really dislike the new menu structure and much prefer the old one as per EM-10 mk ii. The most annoying change in the OM-1 was the change they made to Home Position. I wish you had taken the opportunity to criticize that change. In the previous EM-1 models (starting with EM-1 mk II), the Home Position included optional settings for AF Mode, AF Target Mode, and AF Target Position. So you could use it to reset any combination of these settings. I used it to switch from either of the two AF settings controlled by the function lever (which for birds I had set to a large and small target mode in some variation of C-AF) to S-AF small target mode and no change in target position. A second press for Home Position function (I used a funciton button on E-M1.2, but the joystick on E-M1X and E-M1.3) would return to the previous settings. My biggest disappointment with the OM-1 was, when I went to set this up, to find that they had dropped settings for AF Mode in home position, and dropped the return to previous settings when pressing Home Position again. Instead of a toggle, it's a one-way ride. The implementation is completely inconsistent with the use of the function lever to store two settings, you wipe out what you set and have to reset it. So I don't use Home Position on the OM-1, I just use the switch to AF view and center position.
@RobTrek2 жыл бұрын
I definitely missed that one. I remember toggling between AF modes but didn't use it that much myself. I setup my custom modes instead. Still, the toggling is certainly faster and easier if that's all you need to do.

Thank you, Rob. Your videos have been very helpful. One thing i noticed the difference with my previous EM1X is that previsouly, the multiple selector, if you press it, you can set that not only to a single point, you can change the autofocus setting from caf to saf, but it seems this option is gone now. Did you find that option or is this being taken out?
@RobTrek2 жыл бұрын
I don't have an EM1x, so can't compare. However, there are no af settings for the multi-function button. You basically have to use the fn-lever to switch af settings. The other work-around is to save different af settings to c1 & c2, then assign a button to each.

Thank you very much for the inputs, however: - I’m going to keep the clutch operative, as I can switch MF to AF in a click. - As files sequence, you in US have a fantastic format to catalog: the way you write the date. YYYY-MM-DD or 2023-01-01. There’s an option as naming the file that has the date as first number, followed by time. No matter how many times you format or switch the cards, the sequence will never be the same because the date and surely the time, will change automatically. Having said that, the rest of the suggestions are useful even for me, as my settings are those ones too. But one thing puzzled me: - On the E-m1 mk2 when visioning the previous image on the monitor, as soon as I’d get close to the viewfinder, the image would disappear and I would be ready to shoot the next frame. On the OM-1 it stays on. Has anyone figured out yet how to disable this really annoying function? Thank you again GG

I'm presently using sony as my main camera. I'm getting an OM-1 in the next few days as a carry camera for it's light weight. An issue for me with sony's 90mm macro is the fact that if I use it's clutch. I immediately lose focus whenever I use it; and have to refocus again. It's a real pain in the rear. Please tell me that this is not an issue with with the 12-40mm pro 2.
@RobTrek Жыл бұрын
I have the version 1 of the 12-40pro. It maintains the focus point when engaging and disengaging. The trick is it remembers the last manual focus point used. So if you switch to AF, refocus, and then switch back the clutch to MF, it will focus back to the original point of MF, not the new AF point you just did.

Hi Rob - trying to get my head around setting up the OM1 having jumped ship from Sony. The main issue I am having is trying to disable the focus from the shutter button when using back button focus. The Sony allows this - just press the BBF and let go and the focus is locked. On the OM1 it appears to be different. If you use the BBF and let go it can still be overridden by the shutter button initiating a different focus point. This is where my issue happens - if I use BBF and then need to use the front wheel I , on many occasions, just glance the shutter button and it chooses a new focus point. Is there a way to disable focus from the shutter button, am I doing something wrong or do I just accept that I need to hold in the BBF whilst using the shutter button. Thanks
@RobTrek Жыл бұрын
Hi, Tim. Sorry I missed your question. I actually answered a similar question in this video here kzbin.info/www/bejne/bn21iJVugLOmhLc&lc=UgwCtXgCd2Gqu9LuEYN4AaABAg Here is another tip given by a viewer Tim Evans After playing with the AF settings for a while I found that for me the most convenient way to use BBF is to set "AF-ON in MF mode" (the first AF menu) to "yes" and then, if I want to use BBF, set the focus mode to M. The AF-ON button still works, but half-pressing the shutter button doesn't change the focus. So you don't have to change settings for the shutter button which you might forget to reset before your next shootings. With the focus mode set to M via the manual clutch, however, this does not work - it disables the AF-ON function.

Hi Rob, Thanks again for your most valuable tips. I got caught out just the other day with lens MF clutch being engaged and I did not understand why I was unable to engage the “S-AF” mode. I realised eventually and being new to the OM-1 and the MF clutch lens system, which incidentally I think is great, I was somewhat relieved that my camera was not broken after all! Another question Rob, if I may? I have adopted your custom settings C1 and C2, which I find most valuable when I loose my way. My question is will I be required to make the menu changes to both C1 & C2 settings or are they now available across all operational modes? I know you often suggest doing a total camera reset, which I did before implementing your C1 & C2 settings. So is it possible to select the C1 settings make the new menu adjustment and save back to C1 (overwrite), or save to C3 and delete the C1 settings? One last question Rob and I will leave you in peace. On my Canon 1DX & 5D I am able to store custom setting to the SD Card, reset the camera and reload the saved custom settings from the SD card. Would that be possible on the OM-1 System? Once again Rob I cannot express strongly enough how much I appreciate your expertise and guidance, so I sincerely thank you for all the hard work and effort you put in to help your fellow photographers.

It is painful sitting through an 11 minute video when the same information could be presented much more efficiently in images and graphics. You have good information, please change the mode of presentation and it will be much more useful and take up a lot less bandwidth.

Thanks for the feedback. I get this complaint from time to time. I really do try to be succinct. I'm not so good with graphics and other video production techniques. The best I can offer is to play back my videos at 1.5x using the youtube settings.
