Agreed wholeheartedly. My favourite photographic memories are a record of where I was, not what gear I used. EM-1 mkll is sufficient to my needs and I've even started dabbling with vintage lenses, for which the Olympus is beautifully suited.

Hello Chris, what on earth are you doing tuning in to my little channel?! But thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. And yes, no regrets at all about switching to Olympus after your input! It came down to a face-off at the time between the EM1mk2 and the Fuji XT3 - you swung it for Olympus, so if they're ever after some social proof of your effectiveness as an ambassador ... oh, and can I add you also sold me the 8-25mm too! 😁👍

I'd like to think I'll never be good enough to justify an upgrade of camera systems from the one I'm currently using (Pentax Q). Did a moonrise timelapse last night which surpassed my previous efforts, largely because I'm starting to nail the exposure triangle and shot in blue hour rather than in the pitch dark, to take the weight off the sensor. Learning photography on cheap cameras and making sackloads of mistakes along the way holds a lot of appeal for me. It's always nice to see what the latest flagship cameras can do though, and I enjoy watching these kind of vids too

My E-M1-3 is more than adequate for landscapes, but the subject detection modes of the OM1 are a godsend for wildlife. No more trying to chase the eye with the focus area while the animal is moving around, it’s just straight on it! You can concentrate on composition. 😊

Great words of wisdom. Workshops are a great way of improving your photography. Travel is always a great. I am one of these people that started to follow your KZbin channel after you switch to Olympus gear. It was because I really loved your landscape photos and I shot with the same camera. I basically photograph landscapes, wildlife and birds in flight. From my E-M1 MkII I have gotten the E-M1X and also the E-M1 MkIII. So, I am usually an early adopter and use the camera for 3 years and trade it in before it develops any issues. So, I have pre-ordered the OM-1. The reasons were: 1. More dynamic range and lower noise with the new sensor and processor. 2. Improved AF for BIF. 3. Improved EVF Anyhow, great video.

Hello Griff, Jose from Puerto Rico and new subscriber. My love affair with Olympus goes way back to 1986 when I purchased an OM-4Ti film camera, which I still possess. It needs repairing, though. I totally agree with your comments, a camera body can be replaced, but a photo or memory can't. I learned that the hard way, when I lost a particular shot of my granddaughter when she was around 3 or 4 years of age. Having said that, I did pre-order the new camera and will sell my OMD EM1 Mark II body to put it down as a down payment for another lens. I plan to keep building up my OM system. I simply love Olympus cameras. Living in the tropics and having the ocean around a mile away from my home, I figured that the newer body is more robust and since I certainly don't change bodies every so often, I decided that buying just one body and having it till my teeth fall out was the way to go. I really enjoyed your take today and hopefully will learn a lot from this channel. Thanks.

I cam back from an amazing two week break in The Pyrenees, I´m usually stuck around Madrid taking photos. The scenery got the creative juices flowing, as well as hitting over 25,000 steps everyday. I carried a G9 and two lenses daily. I agree having a lighter kit with you is the way to go. 20 megapixels was, and is more than enough, plus a few 80 megapixel monsters when I found a convenient ledge, jacket, rucksack etc..when I planned to later crop.Looking back at the images, taking into account the lack of filters and sometimes time...due to trekking with the family and three dogs, I am chuffed to bits with them. Given more time to compose better, and slow the process down a smidge , no doubt technically they would be even better. As a side note, I was drawn to micro four thirds for the size, performance and cost....no regrets whatsoever. Love the channel, content, advice and darn right common size!

Totally agree with you. A new camera, whatever the brand, would not be able to improve your photography. Experience in seeing the opportunities which can be turned into a nemorable photograph can. However, to gain that experience, one must learn photography through formal and informal means. A short course in Art/Painting could be useful to compose a scene. Before a painter start painting, he/she would already have the composition in his/her mind. Therefore, its important to train oneself first. Then, photography don't just end in landscape or wildlife photography. For those interested in studio/ beauty/portrait/still life photography, one must study lighting skills too. It is definitely more important than any new camera on the shelf.

Hello from Oz, I've only just found your channel & am finding it very enjoyable, entertaining & educational, so thankyou for that. The video I first found was regarding the OM-1, which I have a genuine interest in. I'm now in my mid 70's & have mainly been a Canon user but lately the weight of lugging around my beautiful "L" series lenses etc has become an issue. At present in Oz, Olympus/OM systems are offering good deals on the OM-1 (I suspect a new flagship body to be announced soon) so after viewing your video I intend to get the OM-1 & lightweight lenses along with a smaller Olympus Pen ??? body that I can take anywhere without the struggling underweight issues. I must add that the bodies of the Canons weren't an issue, it was the lenses. Yes, I will miss my "L" series quality, but your honest videos have convinced me that there is also equal quality in MFT cameras. So, thank you for your very helpful videos & please keep them coming, I look forward to seeing more landscape tips from you & William Patino, another excellent landscape photographer who I expect you are familiar with. I use an E-M5 clipped to my backpack's shoulder strap for my hiking and backpacking adventures, so I'm anticipating a smaller, lightweight OM-5 camera someday. I shoot almost everything with my 12-45mm f4 zoom, but the new 40-150mm f4 zoom caught my eye too. I like the extra stop of dynamic range of the new sensor, and from what I've seen the hi-res shot has gotten much faster. It seems there is a much better chance of getting a successful rendition -- especially when shooting the so-called 'hand-held hi-res' 50 megapixel scene from a tripod mounted camera.

Very good advice. I would say however, that almost four years ago I supplemented my Canon full frame equipment with an Olympus EM1 Mk II and in particular, the 12-100mm f4 lens. It really did make a difference to my photography. I have taken my Olympus camera on journeys and in circumstances that my full frame Canon would never have accompanied me. I have many wonderful images that would otherwise would have been taken on my iPhone, such as multi-day hikes, on deck while sailing in miserable conditions, and on long tourism trips where photography is secondary to travelling with family and friends. Will I buy the new OM1? Probably. I have pretty much wrapped up my professional photography business and no longer have pressing need for the extensive range of full frame gear I have accumulated. That is not to say that OM System is not suitable for professional work, just that I am no longer looking at replacing tens of thousands of dollars worth of gear, just thousands.😁

Good advice David, folk spent far too much time fretting about gear and not enough on investing in either learning or experiences. 2k gets you 3 or 4 weeks in the Scottish highlands or some other National park, or a trip to Iceland, or a couple of good quality residential workshops that will benefit you far more than buying an incrementally improved camera body. Improving the gear only really makes sense when it’s holding you back in some form. Appreciate the mention cheers 👍

I know you would have told her that she would be far more embarrassed if she turned up with a Z9 and took crap photos. I have incidentally, inspired by you, acquired an OMD EM1 ( MK1), it looks like new, came with the box etc and has 1100 actuations. What a nice piece of kit to handle and use. Only 7 years and two iterations away from the subject of this video.

Hello Andrew, I've had people on workshops with that sort of thing, point and shoots and once even just a phone! Because they were looking to decide whether they would get value from a more flexible device. We always work on light, subject, composition in that order. Only then do technicalities of exposure (standard or 'creative') come into play. And this is a pretty standard approach for any tutor of repute! So I do hope she might get get over her fears; thinking about a course in the first place indicates at the very least a passing interest and I'm sure she'd really enjoy it and come away with a new level of inspiration to make the most of what's still solid and capable camera. BTW, really hope you enjoy your EM1 too 😊👍

“If you have enough money, and just fancy it then go and buy it”. Loved this; likely how many people choose their camera! Great advice. The new Olympus camera looks like a winner, though I have long considered the OMD M5 III largely as it is so light and smaller than my G9, but I doubt I have even scratched the surface of what the G9 can do. Still, light and small makes it more likely I will have it with me on the trail. Enjoyed this video!

Hello Gordon, yes judging by a few of the comments and other discussions I've had you're quite right about the "fancy it" cohort! As it happens I use the EM5mk3 as my EDC, c/w the 14-150 kit. Great advice. Buy only if you require the features that you must have to improve your photography. Unfortunately, we live in an age whereby the marketing and sales pressure for "more, better, new, etc" is so great that it is very tempting to buy a new camera for the sake of it. Also, the throwaway mentality from users of mobile phones means that there is an expectation that an electronic device (a digital camera is an electronic device) is consider "ancient" within 3 years even though they are perfectly adequate for another 10 years.

Thanks! I like your perspective. It's sort of like mine: if you need to replace an aging micro 4/3 camera, consider this one to "drive" the gear you own and you will be as happy as you now are (or happier) with your gear. And, anytime you can go take pictures in a new place or try a new creative adventure--go for it. Don't buy a camera based on specs, or to have the most popular brand of the moment. I do photograph birds, so I will eventually upgrade to this camera because of the specific advantages you mention.

Hi David, I agree with pretty much everything you've said in this video. Incidentally, I was one of those who started watching your channel because I shoot m43rds, but I should say that I continued to watch because I loved the hikes, scenery, and photographs, and not because of the gear you use. With regard to this video, yes, I love the look of the new OM-1. It would appear to offer some seriously compelling upgrades. That said, when my Original OM-D E-M1 was showing signs of impending failure, and when Olympus looked like it was giving up on the idea of making more cameras altogether, I purchased a backup system in the form of the Canon EOS R. So, as much as I'd love the OM-1, I can't quite justify it right now. As to your thoughts on putting the old camera on a shelf when it fails, I tried that when the E-M1 finally did stop working a year ago. In the end, I couldn't do it and wound up sending it to New Jersey for a complete refit. It probably cost as much to repair as picking up a used one on Ebay, but it's back, it's fixed, and it works perfectly again. Now when I go for hikes, am I picking up the almost new Canon, or the aging Olympus? Guess what? More often than not, I am still grabbing my E-M1. It's just such a good camera in use, and so convenient. In the end, I just love using it, and that's a big part of the fun. I will almost certainly upgrade to a new OM-1 at some point, but first I have to decide what I'm gonna do with this Canon. To keep, or not to keep...
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 2 жыл бұрын
I guess that having lens systems for both formats gives you options! But even within just one format I pick my gear depending on the outing. So a long, high hike with caming gear will see me with a little EM5 body and one light 14-150 kit lens. I'll take a hit on image quality any day, over being in the right place at the right time 😊👍
@yukonchris
@yukonchris 2 жыл бұрын
@@DGriffGallery I am stubborn (fatal flaw), so I will occasionally take a heavy kit just to eek out every possible ounce of image quality, but experience has shown me that this is generally a bad strategy. It seems that being more comfortable tends to result in opportunities taken, while all that heavy gear winds up acting as an obstacle to actually taking the photos. I can take the E-M1 with the 12-40, and the 40-150, or I can take the EOS R with the 24-105 and a tripod. Any more gear on the Canon side of things feels like a full on expedition, when all I want is a wander in the forest. It's definitely worth thinking about.

Your thoughts on this are very objective, and well stated given you are strictly a landscape photographer. The improvements in the OM-1 are clearly most beneficial to wildlife/bird, sports, and action photographers, but there are upgrades that definitely benefit landscape shooting as well. I shoot it all -- landscape, wildlife/birds, macro, portraits, etc.. I currently shoot with the E-M1X, which I love, and although the OM-1 is definitely enticing to me, I plan to camp where I am for the foreseeable future. Two improvements over the E-M1 Mkll (which I had, but sold) that definitely benefit dedicated landscape photographers are Hand Held High Resolution Mode, and the improved Image Stabilization. I used to be a very dedicated tripod user, but since acquiring my M1X, I have all but abandoned tripod use. My M1X with the Oly 12-100mm f/4 has such amazing stabilization it is silly to hike with the added weight of a tripod. Another unexpected advantage for me is that the IBIS in my M1X is so good that it has allowed me to use lenses like my Oly 75-300mm hand held. With my E-M1 Mkll I pretty much required a tripod for sharp images, now it's almost like a different lens, and is great when I want to minimize hiking weight.
@DGriffGallery

Cheers Greg. Some very good points there. Although, I doubt if I would ever ditch my tripod as I do like to fine-tune compositions, and often find myself waiting for the light to be just right. So setting up and waiting it out is often part of my personal photography style. And I am fortunate enough to be able to tolerate the extra weight even when accompanied by a full camping load out 😊👍

@@DGriffGallery I hear you. I still take a light carbon fiber tripod if I think I might be doing some macro shooting or just as a place to rest my camera and lens if I'm waiting for wildlife/birds to show up. Obviously, in very low light ambient, or situations where I feel sharpness is super critical a tripod is helpful. Thanks for your input.

For Landscape, the Em1-mkIII and EM-1 do have a feature that can improve the dinamic range and reduce noise significatively. It is the LiveND feature. Few people know, but essentialy what it does it takes several photos and averages them. If you take them quick enough (you use a faster shutter speed) then you do not get the "ND" effect but do get the "averaging" efect. I understand the impovement in quality can be significant. The difference is that the the OM-1 would do that 5 s while the MKIII 10s or more. So you should be able to get a MKIII at a very good price now. So, there are things that are not totally aparent. Obvoiulsly the HHHR also helps in case you want that.

Hello Victor, all very good points and thanks for taking the time to outline them. They're all very handy features. I have used the underlying theory of these in-camera processes myself, but in a DIY manner. I shoot a series of fast burst images and then carry out the averaging process myself in Photoshop. By stacking smart objects and using the "mean" blend mode you can get an identical result. It's fair to say, though, that the physics of the camera sensor / processor combination will, of course, still fundamentally generate noise in capturing the exposures. With the legendary Olympus IBIS, and a steady hand, I have easily managed sharp exposures in the realms of 1/4 second exposures and blended series of up to 20 or so in the edit. Resulting in a handheld ND equivalent exposures of around 5 seconds. Plus, doing it myself, means I can discard any RAW files that have been captured in the series which were not sharp. Alll in all, these options in camera a really handy as you said, but for me, in themselves, not persuasive enough arguments to buy a new camera body just yet. One day, when I am "forced" to replace my current gear, these features will, no doubt, be nice bonuses to have available to use. 😊👍

Back in the day when Shakespeare's plays were new, did the reviewers ever wonder, "Wow, great plays! I wonder what brand of quill he uses?" Of course the tool is secondary to the skill of the user! Considering the enormous cost of photography today, I think m4/3's will see continued interest from the enthusiast photographers of the world who can justify the cost of an OM-1 camera and lenses but would balk at the much higher price for similar FF cameras and lenses. And the people who *can* afford photography today need significant disposable income which usually arrives in one's 'mature years' when the lesser weight of m4/3s is another welcome relief!

Hi David, you are absolutly right. I m working with the mk2 and needed a second body and bought the om1. And i m a little bit disapointed. As a long exposure photographer, i was so excited about the live nd feature but as it has so many limitations that it is not so useful... The high res ?! Well...we lived happily with less than 20 mp anyway . And the worst pov is that the dials are much less user friendly... So.. i could have bought another mk2 or mk3..

I wonder if I might ask a question relating to your camera and print sizes. James Popsys explained that he needed to upgrade to a Sony 60Mp camera because he needs to print ‘large’ prints (over A3 size) … and yet, your website offers A2 prints from a 20Mp camera. It would seem therefore that you know something that James does not and, as I ponder whether to jump to a OM-1, your viewpoint would be enlightening. Many Thanks !

Hello Andrew, that's a good question, and perhaps something I should have mentioned in the video. The easiest answer is to refer you to the image you can see behind me on the wall, made with the EM1 mk2 and 12-100 f4 Pro. It's cropped with custom printing and framing. The actual image size sits between A2 and A1 at 530 x 700mm, and I was very happy with the level of detail it retained. I wonder if James was actually justifying significant expenditure to Mrs Popsys?! 😂👍

Diminishing returns - at least in terms of resolution. To double 20mp print resolution requires an 80mp sensor. I'm tempted towards full frame for the high ISO performance and dynamic range, but when I consider my not inconsiderable lens and body collection (the EM1X is a rather nice camera), I have to ask myself if I can live with bracketing, panorama-ing and pixel shift vs dropping six grand to get back where I started in terms of glass and to save myself the hassle of remembering how to overcome technical difficulties. Then there's DXO Photolab, whose Deep Prime noise reduction recently gave me two stops extra to play with for a hundred quid. As Mr G says, it's not going to make me into a better photographer. I'd be the same photographer, undoubtedly with more capable gear, but with rather less in the bank. Can't deny it though, there's something very satisfying about taking delivery of a shiny new camera :)

Fortunately for them, I am not a violent person. I see great photos from point and shoot cameras, great photos from the latest technology full-frame cameras and everything in between. Some are from luck. Some are from opportunity. Some are from skill. The greatness is in the eye of the beholder. If one has the money and resources to have it all, go for it! For me, it is a bit of both. In the end, it is the camera you have with you that provides the image. Keep up the good work, Griff.

Totally agree Dave. I'm still using my EM1ii and have no plans to upgrade anytime soon. For wildlife and sports it would be different but for landscapes it's really only the extra stop of DR and higher ISO in the new sensor. But since I still use a tripod most of the time it's a future purchase if ever. (At least after the price drops significantly!) If I was spending £2000 just now it would be on a new M1 powered Mac Mini, my old i5 powered PC is struggling with the latest software. I'm also lusting after that new f4 40-150 lens! It's getting little press but for me that's a much more interesting proposition to go with my 12-45 f4. But for now, I'll just keep on taking photos...

It's not just 2000 pounds on the body. It's also new batteries - which are MUCH more expensive than the old batteries. Also, you would need a new battery grip (for long lenses) potentially - which is about 30% more expensive than the previous grip. The body, the grip and three extra batteries are more than $3,000 where I would have to buy it. That is a LOT of money for what is essentially a small iteration on the E-M1 III for most use cases. I'd be eager to get the better viewfinder mostly, but upgrading just for that? No.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 2 жыл бұрын
Some really good points there, especially the battery cost. I hadn't thought about that. I only carry one spare, but very rarely need it. I suppose the OM-1 in-camera USB charging from a power pack would save a few quid though? Never considered a battery grip either. My choice of M4/3 is very much for weight and bulk reduction, so I've even thought about that. Of course, there'll be many for whom it's "essential", and then you're quite right - it suddenly becomes a much more expensive "upgrade" 😊👍

It was just a little funny. I think GAS can get the better of all of us at some point. I fall victim to it too from time to time :) Right now I am keeping an eye out on picking up a used EM1iii (I own a EM5ii, and other non MFT cameras). I like the idea of the HHR, better AF and rear thumbstick over the EM1ii, plus the used prices are not that much higher in Australia. I am always enticed by the sensational claims of more resolution and features of subsequent m4/3 models or even switching to full frame. But at the end I seldom see a great enough improvement to spend another $2500 for the latest. This OM-1 with the high resolution function might be the one to pry open my wallet. So far I just know nothing about how computational resolution compares to native high resolution a(?).
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Rick, many thanks for watching and being good enough to take the time to leave your comments. As far as the Olympus computational resolution is concerned it is simply a mechanical operation which takes a fast sequence of eight images, each with a slight shift of the sensor using the IBIS; and then stitches them into a large output raw file. There is some computational processing if you also output a JPG file of course, but that's the same with any camera. 😊👍
