☠️ OM642 Mercedes Diesel "Black Death" 💀 :: Fuel injector Seat Failure and Repair :: DIY

The GL320 had some smells in the cabin that are not supposed to be there so.. In this video I repair the Fuel injector seat on the Mercedes Benz OM642 diesel 3.0Litre v6 turbo diesel. The 2008 GL320Cdi has 195,000 miles on it and this is the third injector to develop this issue. And thankfully it's not been the same one twice. and I have been able to resolve the issue relatively easily every time. I also almost hydrolocked it with carb cleaner..
The Symptoms start with Smell of burnt diesel and smoke and progress to a persistent smell of poorly bunt fuel in the area of the engine.

I had a stuck one and in the end i losen the bolt by 3 turns and spayed it with wd40. Then drove for 30min, it then loses itself

That was one of the tactics I’ve heard of. Thankfully the slide “hammer” I made has worked for every one I’ve had to remove so far.

carb cleaner should not have damaged nothing as it evaporates quickly like brake cleaner dries fast

It sure made my heart skip a beat that’s for sure. 😳 but yeah it’s been a little over a week now and my wife has put 1200 miles on it. So it seems pretty healthy and the smell is gone. 👍

15:59 I have heard others mention that there is a particular orientation that copper washer is to be installed. That one side is flatter. You didn't make any mention to that.

I have heard that too, but when I compare the old to the new. The old one has an impression where the injector pressed into it which leads me to believe that it’s a compressive fit that molds to its surfaces. So the orientation shouldn’t matter. But I’m just a guy on the internet. I have no idea if I’m right 🤪 so far though I’m 3 for 3 and around 50,000 miles with no reoccurring issues on any of the ones I’ve done.

@@GlennLaguna going with your gut is a good thing, and the more experience you have the better that instinct is going to be. In this case there are two flat machined surfaces: aluminum and steel with copper being pressed in between them. So far all three of mine that have failed did so on the injector side of the seat. I don’t know if that helps you choose. Can’t speak with authority on the subject. I’m an IT guy that someone let have tools. 😂

@@MalarkeyTaylor That's interesting. I think most of the others that I've seen have failed on the engine side of the copper washer, and that makes getting that surface flat again harder to do. You were lucky? Or do you think most fail on the injector seating side?

I don’t know about much outside of this one Mercedes. I have had to teach myself how to work on it most because so few local mechanics want to mess with diesel here where I live. And the MB dealer is expensive and hard to justify for such an old car. The ones I have had failed injector side. Which I kind of attribute to the little pocket at the bottom of the injector that allows a buildup to form above the washer/copper seat, and then push itself through the surface. If you look at the bottom of the injector there is a recessed ring that takes some cleaning to get the gunk out. And it just seems like this pocket could create a perfect place for buildup and subsequent failure. But again, just my observation, I’m not an expert on the topic.
