Benefits of plumbing in a CC on om642 cant be overstated as it eliminates oil migrating into engine valley & being mistaken for leak around oil cooler, turbo pedestal or cascading onto port shutoff (swirl flap) motor or aspirating into intercooler & beyond. My CC is mounted similarly & in same location but I didn't have to deal with coolant degas bottle as that is located on opposite side in USA variant. The SS scrubber pad inside CC is good idea as will strain oil vapor passing through, i will have to implement that upgrade on mine. Thank & praises for another excellent tutorial.
@ScottElliott1525 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin. Yes the CC is almost mandatory on the OM642 as it does pump a lot of oil vapour. The baffle definitely works as it gives more surface area for the oil to condense. I've made four of these modified CC's and they're just as good as the more expensive name brand items. You don't need to spend a fortune to create an effective CC. I took the black can off the C320CDI and will install it on the W639 Vito van. The red CC with it's racing "bling" look is more suited to the W204 than a van! I'm convinced the red colour has taken 0.43 seconds off the 0 to 60mph time.

I can't agree with you more. I think the oil/air separator - in addition to stopping the inlet tract and turbo getting coated in mayonnaise i- s critical to preventing DPF failure. From what I can see what happens is two fold: first it loads the DPF with crud and an over rich condition which leads to it demise and secondly the blow by craps out the air flow sensors (the two upstream ones and the downstream one which puts the engine in limp mode which doesn't allow the DPF run through its cleaning cycle or get up to DPF operating temperature which again kills the DPF.

I'm getting a lot of blowby on my '08 ML320 CDI with 148k miles on it. It's enough blowby, that the tubing running from the PCV to the air intake T wants to pop the (loosely connected) orange o-ring loose and thereby open the engine up to unfiltered air, so I modified the connection with a couple of clamps and some pipe tape, to ensure that it cannot come loose. This catch can seems like a good solution - thanks for posting the video!
@ScottElliott1525 жыл бұрын
Russel we also have an 08 ML320CDI with 100,000 miles in the family. My W204 with the same engine only has 50,000 miles but it blows as much oil vapour as the ML. We've replaced that little orange seal on both vehicles as they do wear and become loose. All diesels create a lot of crankcase pressure due to the long stroke and high compression which is why a catch can is worth the effort. It certainly can't do any harm. Scott

Great Video Scott! The oil catch can I got has the double baffle but I see in your modification it makes sense to run a piece of hose down to bottom of catch can. I dont think mine allows me to do that however I will add the steel pot scrubber material to help it catch more oil and not re-injest as much in turbo. Thanks again for quick response and for great video pointers!!

Thanks for posting ML320 info - there is a definite lack of DIY info out there on what is a stupidly complex design. Your transmission oil change video was really helpful. This is the first mod I did to my ML320. Nothing good comes from eating your own poop. The stainless steel wool trick greatly improves the efficiency of the air/oil separator. Be careful with the sensor that is in the hose between the PCV and turbo - it sits at 12V even with the engine off. Don't ask me how I know...

Hi Scott, great video - thank you. Apologies if this comes through more than once. I've just used your install as inspo to install a SAAS baffled 500ml catch can on my W204 with an OM642. I too used 16mm fittings and added a SS pot scrubber to the middle baffle chamber. Although I can blow through the catch can with ease, I'm a little worried about the possibility my cc could result in crankcase overpressure under different driving conditions and blow seals. I had thought about installing a check valve to bypass the can in an overpressure situation but not sure what specs I'd need. Wondering what your thoughts and considerations were / are on this and how you were comfortable you hadn't created an overpressure when you installed?
@ScottElliott15211 ай бұрын
Thanks. I'm comfortable I haven't created over pressure as I've had no issues since installation. Also, now there's almost no oil at the turbo inlet whereas before it used to drip out. I reckon you drive the car, monitor and see how it goes. There's a one way valve in the system where the OEM rubber hose is connected at the cylinder head.

Thanks! I’ve now collectively done around 100kms over city driving and short highway runs at 110kph. No visible issues as yet so hoping my setup is ok too! Do you find the steel scrubber needs replacing or cleaning out at intervals?
@ScottElliott15211 ай бұрын
@@adv6504 No they don't need cleaning. The scrubber pads just provide more surface area for the oil to condense on. Then it flows to the bottom of the can. You just have to keep an eye on the accumulated oil level.

@@ScottElliott152makes sense, thanks again! I’ve installed a clear 16mm drain tube on mine with gas rated tap / valve at the bottom of the tube and aim to empty the tube before the can accumulates any / much oil. I haven’t measured but suspect I get around 150ml capacity out of the drain tube alone. Thanks again for your experience!

@adv6504 I don't do many kilometres (about 4,000k p.a.) in my W204 C320CDI so the catch can doesn't accumulate much.

Good job, Scott! Except that the motor's plastic cover can not be reattached after oil can installation, are there any SIDE EFFECTS?
@ScottElliott1525 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marius ... side effects? a Cooler motor! I removed my cover years ago. It's been hanging on the wall of the garage as a reminder of man's ability to make plastic engine covers that serve no purpose. I removed the cover from my Nissan D40 Frontier/Navara as well and that gets taken into extreme environments. I prefer the uncovered look of the OM642 especially if you keep the engine clean. There's plenty of insulation on the underside of the hood so that doesn't get any hotter. If you used reducers, smaller hose and chose a different route you maybe able to keep the cover on.

Hello gentlemen, First I'd like to start by congratulating Scott on a job well done. There is some drawback to the baffle design in my opinion. What I am trying to say is, won't there be the risk of some parts of the scrubbing metal "sponges" to come off and go into the inlet? Now I have some questions - why did you go with such a big diameter for the inlet and outlet hoses from the catch can? I understand that the 90 degrees elbows need to match the diameter of the oil breather hoes, but you could have used diameter reduction afterwards, right? You could machine a T connector with separator to make a more neat looking install. The benefits of such a contraption is that the oil doesn't mix anymore with the particles of gases from the EGR, thus the intake manifolds won't get clogged up anymore. Thanks and waiting for your reply. BR, Alex
@ScottElliott1525 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex. The stainless steel pads are made of long strands twisted into a bundle so it's impossible for any to find there way into the turbo. You could place a piece of metal gauze at the outlet if you're concerned. Using smaller hose reduces the flow and these engines pump a lot of oil vapour. The bigger the hose the better so as not to impede the flow of vapour. As I said in the video I've been using this design for sometime. The 4wd has done many trips into the remote deserts. The most recent was in August ... 6000km through four deserts and 820 sand dunes and the Nissan ran like clockwork with it's $20 catch can filled with stainless steel scrubbing pads! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYTHfap3hNyNl8U&pbjreload=10

Scott Elliott hi- thanks for the video, I’ve eventually done an Swirl flap delete, motor runs neat. I will upload the video once I can get my head around Apple’s cloud issue of creating more space 😁. Thanks again, do you have a link for the oil catch can, does the company deliver to the UK?
@ScottElliott1525 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay. There's a link in the description for the type of CC I purchased ... but do a search on eBay for "universal oil catch can" and hundreds will come up. I'll be interested to see your video on the swirl flap delete. I did do mine with the 4.4kOhm resistor in the connector to mimic the swirl flap motor ... but couldn't notice any difference so put it back to stock. Those swirl motors often fail due to oil dripping out of the turbo inlet seal onto the motor below. Replacing that big orange seal and installing a catch can will all but eliminate the oil dripping problem.

Scott Elliott thank you, just seen it - I’ll do an installation and happy to reference you in my vid 😁. Appreciate this🙏🏾. I have a quick question, can a faulty glow plug, make my om642,engine hesitate at 2,900 rpm in driving on the motorway, I can’t get past 3,000 rpm without it jerking/ hesitating, I’m baffled... And also I’m thinking of using reviveturbocleaner.com’s product, to get to places where the turbo vanes and EGR might have suffered soot after time build ups, should I spray it directly to the turbo blades whilst the engine is on? Normally I’d spray it from an air intake but as the om642 engine has two intakes, I wouldn’t be able to spray at both ends at the same time, but to take off the y-pipe air intake and then spray directly to the turbo... would that be advisable? Also how do I get the Chinese replica of the Mercedes STAR diagnostics machine, please :)) can it be installed on MacBook Pro or an Android platform ? Many thanks Scott 🙏🏾 From Jay UK 🇬🇧
@ScottElliott1525 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay ... based on my experience faulty or failed GP's make the car harder to start when cold but that’s it … and yes it does get cold in Australia. We had a 2C minimum here a few weeks ago! I have no experience with spray on turbo cleaner but the vanes do look kinda delicate so I’d be hesitant to spray directly onto the blades. If you spray into one of the intakes they join in front of the turbo so it will go through anyway. Alternatively you could clamp a suitable sized hose/duct (say about 300mm long) onto the turbo and spray into that so you’re introducing the cleaner from a distance and not directly onto the blades. I bought my STAR from here: www.obdexpress.co.uk/producttags/mb-sd-c4-c5.html I purchased the full system installed on an external HDD. It was 07-2013. STAR uses a modified Windows XP Professional SP3 operating system so android is out. If you’re prepared to hand over the cash the easiest way to get going is purchase the refurbished DELL630 laptop loaded with the software and complete with C4/5 multiplexer, plugs and cables. You’ll turn it on, plug it in and away you go. Once you get familiar with the system you can join www.mhhauto.com and download older versions of STAR that will give more access. I have DAS/Xentry 10-2008 and 01-2011 and use them all the time as you can actually do things. Xentry is so locked down it won’t let you do much more than read codes. However it was a lot of work and research to get it all working and is not for the faint hearted. You need good PC/IT skills. I had to create virtual machines and install fresh versions of Windows XP Professional SP3 then run the various patches and replace system files with the Mercedes versions. All the files/patches etc are available on www.mhhauto but it requires a lot of reading and searching. If you bought the laptop you may not have those issues and could install the earlier versions without too much fuss. Scott (from sunny Australia)

@@ScottElliott152 This is needed and happens because of the emissions systems on the car along w the wrong oil that mercedes tells you to use in order to match the emissions statements they make to all the governing bodies for that sort of thievery. The wrong oil combined w the high temps during DPF regen cause polishing of the cylinder walls and that allows for more blowby over time.
