Im a firm believer in not investing in the 1st generation of a camera.Think how Fuji finally nailed the X-T3 after 3 tries, how Sony nailed the A7III after 3 tries. Theres really not much wrong with either of those unless you're getting super nitpicky. With the EOS R theres still so much to nitpick, but to me the R series will be the camera to beat in a couple years. RF lenses are the future for Canon, they are just way too good and I need a couple more years anyways to be able to afford any of them! haha

I couldn't agree with you more. Sure it's got some great firmware updates recently which made it even better but what is the elephant in the room is that KZbinrs who are getting sent cameras to test and review are getting them at pretty much ZERO cost and certain individuals are getting the cameras and some lenses at very little cost which of course they are going to make videos with them and "SWITCH" to this system. This whole tech industry has been super flooded with new gear and specs every 6-8 months and it's ridiculous. It's social media advertising at it's best. People buy X camera because they see a KZbinr using it and they think they can have the same results. What they don't have or lack is "creativity" the "eye" and just knowledge of photography. They play the cameras short comings with some positives in a sales pitch. When the 1dxii was new it was the video and photographers go to camera for the DPAF and the photo speed, and the AMAZING mind blowing 120 fps and 60 FPS in 4k. Now of course the EOS R doesn't have that but hey who needs that when it has 24p LOG in 4k with a HUGE crop! It's all about how it's marketed to the consumer and I think there is just huge influence to drive sales. No there is not BEST camera out there, but specs and people sell the product, and if the specs on paper are not up to snuff then give it some time and people will come around to it. Prime example, Manny Ortiz. He is a DIE hard Sony shooter which is fantastic but lately he's been all over the EOS R. Wonder why? Sure it may fit his shooting style better but I think there is a little silver lining behind it. If I was given a EOS R with a brand new 85mm 1.2 I would make any video anyone wanted regarding the camera and the lens.

24-240 is big and heavy... Things have certainly changed. I mostly use mine with the Sigma 150-600, and 70-200. Probably would help if I attached some kind of counter weight to the camera - the battery grip would be fine but they want $200 for it.

@Jordan_Moore4 жыл бұрын
I've only been doing photography seriously for the last year, so there are certainly people with more experience than me. That being said, I just did a shootout for the last couple of weeks between the EOS R and the a7iii, both equipped with Sigma ART 35mm f/1.4's, and finally decided to go with the Sony. For pure photography it was a very close battle. I'd give a slight edge to the Canon for colors, but with just a bit of tweaking I could easily get the Sony photos to look the way I wanted them. The three biggest advantages that the Sony has (in my opinion) are the low light performance. ISO 10,000 is completely usable! The autofocus on the Sony is still vastly better (especially in low light situation) even after the Canon firmware update. And lastly, the video features. Not even close. All that being said, I don't think anybody would go wrong to buy the Canon. It really does come down to what's important to you.

You hit the nail on the head. After revisiting this camera in 2021 Canon really pulled a `Canon` and purposely didn't make it too "5d4ish" to prevent it from competing with the 5D4, and furthermore make people thirsty for the next gen R5/R6. Really waste of development with the multi function bar, and imo they purposely created friction by eliminating dials and ease of use which was not broken in their DSLR line up. However, considering they wanted to protect their DSLRs that they were still selling at the time and to make the next gen R5/R6 offerings more compelling, they crippled it. Some basic things that did not require any crazy R&D since it was already available in their DSLRs: button/dial placement, dual card slots, improved evf and overall response (no delay after taking pictures).

It's December 14, 2019 and this camera is currently on sale on all the camera sites for $1499, which has come down from $1799 since a few days ago (which initially came down from $2299 for the holidays). The new low price is why (once again) I'm researching this camera. I've been on the fence about getting this camera for a good 6 months now and I keep telling myself "No". I mainly do videography (on a Canon C200) but I've been doing a lot of still photography lately and have been shooting photos professionally this year on a Canon 7D Mark II. And after watching a few videos in my temptations to buy this camera at $1499, my final decision is still "No". I can't let a lower price make me decide to buy a camera that I know will only frustrate me in the end and make me wish I had just waited a little longer for possibly something better or even to finally decide to get the Sony I've been thinking about too. I also have to question why the price on these cameras have dropped so drastically from $2299 to $1499 in the last 2 months. I know it's the holidays and there are sales, but this new sale price of $1499 doesn't seem to be just a temporary sale price since it doesn't have a date or time when the sale ends. The funny thing is when you brought up the "multi function bar" and how it's a little annoying, that's when I finally just told myself, forget about this camera (along with other certain specs too of course)! Once again....... a solid NO for me! Anyway, thanks for the great honest review!

Hi Omar, where have you been???? Man, this video is so practical and objective. Refreshing.... Couldn’t stop laughing at when you called out those who defends the 1 card slot because it has never happened to them. 100% agree with this but that’s being logical and not emotional or not thinking prevention. I use a A73 for stills and GH5 for video but as a hybrid shooter, I needed a one system setup and since the mythical A7s3 never showed up, I got the S1H and it’s a beast in real world use. It can do everything but as you mentioned when traveling with family or needing the Canon colors, the EOSR fits that need. From my POV, I consider two things when purchasing: buy what you need/want and what you can afford. Forget the marketing pitch on specs and being brand struck. I got a bargain I couldn’t resist on Ebay for $1150 for the EOSR (almost new, open box and the guy is moving to another system and needs the money) even though I know that the 1DX3 and EOSRS bodies are coming out in Feb and Mar’20 respectively. But for sure there is no way they will be priced at these levels. Besides worst case, I can always sell it and upgrade if it makes sense for my needs. The thing that doesn’t get talked much but you mentioned in this video are the prices of the rf lenses. They cost almost or more than the body for each lens except the 35/1.8 and the 24-105/4 kit lens. For pro work where you get paid, you don’t think about it as much but for consumers/prosumers, ef lenses seems like a good alternative and value for money. Would love to see you do a deep dive into how the modes and dials can have quick access on the EOSR. Btw, for the 4k crop, Kinotika talked about the new release of the metabones sb which reduces it down from 1.74-75x to 1.24x if you shoot in this mode. I missed out on the bashing of the EOSR, GH5, etc etc. If camera mfgs are listening, I think it’s more prudent for them to take some more months before releasing to works out the kinks then get pressured from marketing who are chasing consumers/prosumers/pros thirst for latest and greatest specs. I’ve noticed it takes them 1yrs (Canon) and 2yrs (GH5/5s/9) to fix all the things that makes people buy it. In the meantime, those that bought early are frustrated/angry/complain and others won’t touch it. Hurts the brand as there is a trust and reputation issue. Subbed and liked and looking forward to your contents, especially for the EOSR. Thank you and happy holidays!

that's what I am saying. everyone shoots with hand today. they didn't give it on purpose for first iteration because they will give it as selling point in second, or maybe third in 5 years...yeah, that's how this business works, they let u use mediocre product that frustrates u, then they keep u using it for a couple of years and then they give u incremental update so u r less frustrated and finally release something in 5 years but it will still miss something that they will keep for future upgrades. there is no one complete package camera on the market. let's say popular a7iii. where stupid sony frustrates their user base with no flippable screen for example even tho everybody uses it for vlogging....hahahaha, either their engineers are autistic or they do it on purpose....yet nobody calls them out or boycott's them, where I would because at the end it's not about image but content that we all know and even cheaper cameras do the same job as these high end prosumers, but again they never make a complete package

@QippysChannel4 жыл бұрын
77dris strangely enough I felt that at times my pics did feel like it look sharper and better at times in the 5d4 and I think it may be because the fact tht with the 5d4 we were less aware of the final outcome via and evf so we weren’t just exposing based on the evf, when u expose on the evf i feel far too often u sometimes forget to look at the real exposure values before exposing cos everthing is based on how good the image already looks in the evf, so at times this may lead to not realising that I have used a slower shutter etc, so the final outcome may have micro shakes which we are unaware of untill we see the actual exposed image again thoroughly, well that’s my own personal opinion on it I guess, but if only there could be a really great hybrid system that can really marry optical and digital evf together that would be so awesome, so having the ability to go full on optical and full on evf on demand haha oh well

My question is, have you tested/compared these 2 systems, and can you recommend one over the other, in terms of an improvement in sharpness/detail retention from my Fuji X-T3, in large poster prints? @jamalgumbs75184 жыл бұрын
@@justmattgray Hey Matt, it depends, a card failure can result in the card just being dead and nothing can be done or corrupted in which the data can be recovered if you have the right tools. Sometimes it just can't be help if something does happen to the card. As far as precautions to prevent that, you really can't do much seeing that data is only going to one spot. Recently the SD slot on my 5D Mark Iv went bad and can longer write that slot, this also happened during a shoot, thankfully, I shoot in redundancy so I had the same data on both cards.

@@jamalgumbs7518 thanks for responding! You mentioned tools to recover. Are you talking about data recovery software? I've seen some mobile back up solutions like the Gnarbox. I plan to tav team weddings with another shooter with the same camera so i don't think redundancy is super important. However, I do fear losing someone's wedding. That sounds like a nightmare. Thanks again!
@jamalgumbs75184 жыл бұрын
@@justmattgray You're welcome! You can use software or recovery hardware, albeit they can cost thousands..., or have any card suspect of failure/corruption sent to a recovery specialist. As for the mobile back up solution, that is a good way to secure files on the go but the core issue is in that that 1 card or slot on the camera fails/becomes corrupted before you have the chance to get to the data. I would always want to have the second card slot as it greatly minimizes the chance of losing all the data. I was forced to do a wedding with only the CF card on my Mark IV and I was terrified of a card failure/corruption but I got through without any issue. Even if cameras are still released with only one card, I'd wish that they would use CF or CF express as it is a farm more secure, reliable and durable format over SD which I have had some issues with over the years.

I got the EOS R because the price dropped. I've always knew I wanted to get into the system because of those amazing RF lenses, so when the price dropped I jumped in. 5D mk IV and some EF lenses for sale now. I do want a better body so will probably get the 'pro' one that has the dual cards, faster FPS, joystick and dial and hopefully IBIS, 4K60, FullHD120 and uncropped 4K (I'll even take a slight crop). I'd probably just keep the R as a second body.

Martin Kulik clearly the original commenter is happy. You for your own internalized entitlement feel the need to try and give them a hard time over it. Again this person is happy. Let them be, why try and ruin that because you’re not?
@pandawhitenoob2 жыл бұрын
@@martinkulik9466 all the same, it is worth starting with the fact that first of all it is a camera. and then the video. If you are serious about recording video, then you need a camcorder. not a camera with a camcorder function. if you don’t shoot commercials, advertising, etc. and don’t get decent money for it, but shoot for yourself - why overpay? With regards to ibis, it is strange, but in the cameras of previous years it was not and this did not prevent people from creating amazing photos. National Geographic generally accepted photographs taken with such cameras, which by today's standards are simply a shame. and you know, no one died. Of course, its presence would not hurt, but seriously, it does not really solve anything. if you decide to write a video, you will need a stabilizer anyway. plus the presence of internal stabilization gives a slight heating and the suspension mechanism is not so reliable. canon herself said that due to various reasons she did not put it in the p series, compensating for this with lenses with internal stabilization. and last. cameras at the moment at a price of 1500-2000 dollars shoot almost the same. everything else is tweaked for post-processing. you can engage in technodrocherstvo until death and look for "the very camera" and not find it. A professional camera is made not by its specifications, but by the one who has it in his hands. in the hands of a pro - any camera is professional. in the hands of an amateur - all cameras are amateur. give you a $10,000 camera - you won't be able to shoot what they want to put in magazines, etc. give a professional a $1,000 camera and he'll make masterpieces for you. so what you wrote is complete nonsense friend. I’ll tell you a secret - even on a crop without stabilization and other things - they make commercial projects and take pictures in magazines. Did you shoot a lot and how much did you earn?
@AdrianWilsonBridders12344 жыл бұрын
After a lot of trepidation, I took the plunge and bought one, and I’m impressed so far. Having been using elderly 1d mark 3 and a 1ds 3 this is a complete rethink, better af, especially with Sigma glass, as the EOS 1’s are inconsistent and frustrating (105 F1.4 Art) and the R nails focus perfectly, the video features are a close match to the C100 mark2 so it’s a great combination for my needs.

It's not a serious option yet. The one thing that makes it a factor is that Canon obviously are going R mount. The lenses are already awesome. What eill happen with continuous development of EF? Thank you for the wonderful presentation about this camera! Yes, it is right for photographers to choose the Eos R. The range of lenses is constantly growing - and third-party providers will also be added soon. Whether you want to wait or decide to buy a Canon-like camera like this, you have to know for yourself, but if you have EF lenses and don't want to sell them, there is no way around it in the future! Greetings from Berlin/Germany and keep it up.

Saying it's being accused that is bad on specs... it's a bad excuse. It's a mirrorless 5D, and a 5D is not a bad camera. This means besides coming late to the mirrorless party it didn't bring anything new agains't the competition. They cropped the 4k which is the worst/laziest sensor readout and no 1080 fps. For video 5D users wouldn't spend money for an almost equal camera, Sony users wouldn't change due to 4k crop, and Panasonic for lack of IBIS for instance, and there are a lot more reasons not to change. Like Caleb Pike said, this camera was designed for Canon.

After having the camera (two, actually) for several months now, first quickly realized that a big mistake early reviewers made was not realizing that this camera is simply a different animal from the Canon DSLRs. At this point, I don't trust the opinions of anyone who hasn't used it for a few months. It's kind of like the difference between a Brit and an American. The language seems the same at first, but the more you get to know them, the more differences you realize exist. Too many people expect this camera to act like a 5D4. It's just not a 5D4 and shouldn't be expected to act like one. After months, I'm still discovering, "Oh? This camera can do THAT?" One of the latest things I've learned is to put focusing back on the shutter release specifically to shoot stage productions. I've learned to do a finger dance: Left fingers are riding exposure with the control ring as the stage lighting changes in the EVF, right thumb is moving the focus point from performer to performer, right index finger is focusing and releasing the shutter. It's wonderful. I tried going back to a DSLR and hated it. The main thing I want in a new camera is more custom C-modes. The ability to configure this camera for different shooting situations is amazing.

One thing no one mentions - Internal Memory... there would be no need for a Second Card Slot! Many times have I walked out with my Cameras and forget to put back my SD Card in them... however with my Fuji X-20, which I still Enjoy using, has Internal Memory, and can still take Pictures without a Card.! 32, or 64 Gigs for Internal Memory, one would not need a second card slot, or even worry even with only one! And just simply transfer all the Pics from In Camera to SD Card, and not worry about SD Viruses, or Corrupted Cards!
