"when you relax, you have 'potential energy' to use on the wave". That was a pretty profound lightbulb moment for me. Thanks guys. Great video.

"a good bottom turn is like jumping up a table". That is news to me! It does make sense though. The way you explain things is unique and very insightful.

The point about efficient, smooth surfers getting underscored is really interesting and makes total sense. You can compare that to ski racing where often the ones that look like they are going the slowest actually win the race because they are just so smooth and efficient that it *looks* like they are going slower. But there is no subjectivity in judging winning or losing it’s just speed. Subjectively judged sports are always going to have controversy.

I agree with others about the Oreo biscuit thing. The theory didn't make sense to me and I've tried it a bunch of times (and will try it more). To be clear I'm extremely skilled at positioning and timing and on most waves I typically only need a stroke or two to get into. I've tried Oreo biscuit and it feels like you are sending conflicting messages- one to your board to go down the wave, but lifting up your body says back up and out of the wave. Once your weight comes up/goes backwards the wave simply passes underneath you- very similar to backing off a wave. I thought maybe this is a so cal mushy wave thing but in the Josh Kerr in Bali example you guys point out- I've never seen anyone take off down there doing the Oreo biscuit. I also wouldn't count popping up in an up dog as Oreo biscuit either. All of your other advice has improved my surfing drastically and I'm extremely thankful for the channel and the entertainment I get out of it- just thought I'd give some feedback.

these guys talk about this technique and show footage in really helpful way at 2:17. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGLUoGl3rbGoas0&ab_channel=TheSurfContinuum Its very common on mid length/long boards

oh by the way, cut the bull shit. if you were "extremely" skilled at positing and timing that would mean you are likely a highly skilled surfer, in which case you would know this concept and its efficacy.

Like I said I tried it and was having an open minded discussion. Nothing is gospel and what works for some won’t work for every one. and no need to get so aggro over a peaceful/inquisitive comment. IMO it just doesn’t work in the mush I surf where any type of letting up on the body lessons of your chance pf getting in. I did manage to get it work on my long board with a ton of foam in front of me

I am now an OMBE addict! …and I’ve been surfing for 50 years. 😂. But I am one of those people Clayton describes, I often run out onto the flats before executing a cutback. I need to work on staying in the power part of the wave.

Sports all develop their own ideal “styles” over time because those forms usually coincide with maximum skill at that specific sport. I think also why fake style which is usually superfluous and doesn’t add to the function of surfing we instinctually see as kind of a farce. Great discussion and insight. Thanks!

Intermediate surfers don’t go top to bottom, at least a big hump for me, was proper weight transfer and really knowing how much the hands and torso and legs need to rotate to cover the balance need...like on a cutback, when beginning, i was always just falling backwards, until I started using my arms to help me torque and maintain balance through more aggressive moves.

you guys need to articulate what oreo , coffee cup, cardboard slide, is everytime. Ive seen you reference these in multiple videos and have no idea what they mean. Coffee cup is kinda self explanatory but idk which hand you're referring to

Hate single fins? Riding a single fin (and a longboard) is one of the best ways to develop style.

the oreo biscuit method is harder when u have smaller waves...? any way i tried it last session in the water (probably not in the best way but still) and fealt that just slide with nose pressure and gravity help its more necessary. ( im begginer-intermade surfer)
