on that distributor, the timing advance seems to be centrifugial if so, the electronic components are easy to substitute, the pick up coil can be replaced by a Chrysler PU coil and the module can be replaced by a GM HEI 4 pin module, this needs a bit of thinkering to fit the PU coil im the distributor, you can conserve the original reluctor ring, the wiring diagram is very well detailed on the internet. I done that on a 3.8 liter OMC ( chevrolet 229 base engine equipped with a point style Prestolite marine distrinutor ), the complication was to design a special reluctor ring for the application as this motor is not even fire so I can't use the Chrysler slant six reluctor ring. the result is very good after more than 10 years of use.

Mike, this is Bryan, another great video. I'm assuming you have a Ford block, as the distributor is in the front of engine. Ours is the 5.7 GM block. Our distributor is in the rear of the engine. It is the Prestolite brand. I was told also a Mallory distributor was also used on my engine. I still run the breaker points, change them every 10 years. They never once failed before removal change out. I carry a spare set on the boat, never have needed them. Actually I think the Condenser (really a capacitor) would be more likely to fail due to aging. Our motor year is 1990.
@michaelromer20167 жыл бұрын
Deborah Bicker Thanks so much! Yep, mine is a 5.8, but I also have/had many 5.7s--so in reality, I'm better with a Chevy block. I'm about to post how-to test a capacitor. Super easy to do in a few minutes with a multi-meter.

I turned the small nut on top of the pickup visible at 3:00. I thought I had to loosen it to remove the pickup. (I did not) Did I damage anything? To remove the pickup you take out to 2 screw at 7 o'clock and 2 o'clock. Be careful not to drop them or the small lock washers down inside the distributor!!

Wondering if you might be able to help me out. I'm pretty sure I have a bad ignitor based on this "click" test as well as some voltage testing I did based on the service manual. I have ordered the PerTronix 1589 ignitor, and also the PerTronix coil. The PerTronix coil is an internally resisted coil, and the coil that is currently there says it is "for use with external resistor" Do you know if there is an external resistor or resistor wire on this engine? Based on the testing I have done, with the ignition on I get 12v between the solenoid and purple wire that goes to the + side of the coil. If it was resisted wouldn't the voltage be less that 12v?

Michael. Thanks for the video. My distributor is exactly like yours. All of the replacement ignitions appear to be retro fit for an ignition that had lobes on the shaft to open close points. Since the one in the video (like mine) don't have lobes, but rather the 8 magnetic points for the hall effect sensor, does this mean the whole distributor must be replaced ? Or just piece out a sensor and adapt it keeping the existing magnets that appear to be press fitted to the shaft ? Thanks, again.

@michaelromer20165 жыл бұрын
Set the distributor in where it goes in with no effort. If you have to rotate it to get it to drop in, pull it out, and give it another go. Once it drops all the way in, barely tighten the bolt. Fine tune the rest of the way with a timing gun. If you don't know how to use a timing gun reply back to me and I'll make a video.

Just changed my out to the pertronix. I checked the voltage at the positive terminal of the flamethrower coil I was getting 12 or greater volts. The pertronix 1589 requires at least 12v. I thought these had a ballast wire to reduce voltage. I have 9.8v at idle off the negative terminal. After install I was able to let the boat idle on the ramp for a while and measured 12.8v on the positive terminal. Does these seem correct to you? The engine started right up after install (minus 1 large back fire on initial crank over). Idle is smooth but tach is showing 2000rpm which is about 1500 rpm to high if I remember correctly.

There’s a timing gauge above the harmonic balancer. You’ll be able to hear a difference in the way the motor runs when you rotate the distributor clock wise/counter clockwise.

For my engine, a 91 Ford 5.8L the gap between the rotor and the pickup (its galled the air gap) is .008 in. or .20 mm. Yours may be different. This is found in various places: My Clymer manual has it in the Electrical System chapter and section for the Prestolite and in my Seloc manual in section 10-45. WARNING Have the Ignition OFF while you check the gap. Your feeler gauge can trigger the ignition and cause a spark. Depending on where coil output wire is sitting, you could start a fire. So Ignition OFF. If you are rotating the distributor to intentionally cause a spark like in the video, please be sure that you know where the spark will go. You can ground the output from the coil. I do not think it is good idea to pull the output wire out of the coil because then the spark has nowhere to go. That may damage the system. The best option is to use a spark tester tool that simulates the spark plug gap and clamps to a good ground. Like this one: www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_7002015
