do you have video how to remove gimbal assembly. the grease tube to gimbal bearing is corroded away (boat takes in small amounts of water and destroyed a new gimbal bearing in 1 season) and i need to remove part of gimbal housing that turns the drive to have room to tap a hole for a grease fitting on outside of where gimbal bearing goes? any help

Hi Michael Need advice 1995 Four Winns 5 litre Ford, Volvo Penta SX Cobra M series I think 1.66 gear ratio Put in water for first time yesterday late due to health issue. When started up seemed to be a growly scrape noise with a light tap or knock. When put into gear, about 600 rpm the noise got louder. It was fine last year when put away. Stored with leg down all the way with Styrofoam between lead edge of leg and trailer, Took out ran good rpm 3300 at 32 mph noise could not hear likely due to engine and water noise nd speed. Would it be needing new gimbal and seal and bellows. Also new u joints? It was off in October 2018 all greased. Our marine repair is limited here. Also put new 160 thermostat in 2 years ago, it was wonky t first but settled at about 145 o 152 ish. On our maiden run it went to 155ish it opened and an 120 it only came up if slowed down and mayb 130 135 ish. Could be bad thermostat again or bad sender the boat has a one piece integrated dash. Or do I need a new separate temp guage...leaving both hooked up Thank you for help...I am really bummed out as we may have 6 weeks left.... let alone how long to fix it if I can afford it now. Really baffled, it was all good last falll. Thanks

Question for the pro here: My gimbal bearing is original on my 99' volva-penta but it seems in excellent condition, I do believe the bellow was leaking a tiny bit but no rust or anything anywhere. This boat lives mainly on the trailer. So would you replace the bearing simply do to age?

A trick I would do is put your fingers in the hole and spin the bear around. Speed doesn’t matter-it should be smooth. Any bumps or sand feeling in the movement, then replace it. Don’t forget to grease it on a regular basis. Please subscribe!

The gimbal bearing makes a horrible sound when it’s going out. I make it a point to grease the zirk every year to help with longevity and I also listen for unusual sounds at start up.

Thank you for your response, I just now stumbled across your response. Looks like I should do the inevitable. I have just replace the flywheel and the motor seems to be ass low when I re installed.

Its a torque multiplier, the pipe on the wrench, loose term for anything getting you more leverage, i use a big wrench on a little wrench sometimes and it transforms from wrench to torque multiplier

I believe I have to replace my gimbal bearing. I hear a weird noise when turning boat left or right but goes away when going straight. Looked under the sx-m drive, should the exhaust bellow be connected on both sides of the bellow. One side to boat and other side to drive. Mines only connected to the boat.

Sounds like your u joints are going out but the gimbal bearing is suspect too. Pull the stern drive off and check for slack on the u joints. I can post a video on how to check them if you would like.

Enjoy your whole series on OMC, THANKS! So everything went fine, I have a greaseable bearing, I lined up the outer cage and lined up the hole. Bearing was in all the way. When I started greasing it, the grease was coming out between the outer race and the housing. I punched the bearing back out and found everything was still lined up. Any thoughts? Thanks Tom

Thanks for posting. I have watched several of your videos. Just tackled my first gimbal replacement and engine alignment this weekend. I used the same Sierra bearing (18-2100) that you show. I have a Volvo Penta DP-SM outdrive - 1999 MY. Here's my question. I aligned the grease hole to the hole/Tube in the transom plate. My marks are lined up well. I went ahead and greased the bearing, rotating it by hand or with the alignment bar while greasing. I got about three or four pumps of grease in before the grease starts squeezing out between the outer race and the aluminum transom plate. I have no grease coming out from within the bearing itself. Is this normal? Is that Sierra bearing already packed out of the box? I'm thinking something is off. Wondering what you saw when greasing yours?

Tim Waterman, the bearing has minimal amounts of grease from the factory. I normally get 3-4 on the initial fill too. Rotating it by hand like you did is spot on. Here's a cool trick afterwards. When you regrease the bearing again, squeeze the handle slowly, stop when you feel the first bit if resistance. It's hard to feel if you are squeezing the handle too hard. Too much grease compromises the inner seal. Have a good one!

Reading my mind, karma- good video, but you don’t have to try to make yourself seem better or smarter by sh*tying on one of your subs, while you’re turning it the wrong way and saying they are reverse threads…. And the caliper part too, like oh it’s 1.2 inches for those of you not familiar with the metric system. Oh great, I’ll ask my snap-on guy if he has a 1.2” wrench for me. C’mon guy. You’re better than that.
