Hi Michael, love your video’s. Are you sure the seal driver is orientated the right way? I think it needs to be facing opposite this way you only hitting the outer wall of the seal.

Is the seal supposed to sit flush against that motor-side surface? I can feel about a 1/8” gap back there

JR the little space behind the seal is 100% normal. They allow for that so the seal remover tool has some room to get behind the seal for the removal process. I had that same exact concern the first time too.

I'm curious about what this oil seal actually does. There's no oil on either side that it's sealing in or out...

Great question! You can tell what it does based on the way the seal faces. In this case, it keeps the gimbal grease inside the gimbal area, and it also keeps dirt out of the gimbal area--from the engine area.Thanks!

crows foot would pop the old seal out without removing pivot housing.Also your car isnt under water.Ill use gasket sealer

Hi. I'm going to tackle this repair next week and am curious to how you use a crows foot to remove the seal? I'm dealing with a seized gimbal bearing to remove first, but am hoping I can do the seal once it has been removed.

This is not an oil seal. It is a dust seal. Just because it is there, doesn't mean it is necessary. I usually don't replace them. Not going to hurt anything.

Jim, the manual has it listed as a seal. You and me both know there isn’t a dust issue with boats. If anything, I can say grease seal.

@@michaelromer2016 So the word seal is your issue. Not necessary is mine. Was told in mercruiser tech school. You went to the expense and time to replace something that a mercruiser engineer theorized was needed. In turn made the company money. Not getting down on you. You fallowed instructions. The instructions just made someone more money.
