Always been told to store drive down during winter to make sure water is drained and save the bellows from cracking.....

I have a set of those, and have used them since the early 90's. But use a strap as well. I got rear ended so I strap up and down to the trailer now. It was a seen! I think they helped.

The stern eyes or hooks on rear of the boat are for transom straps while trailering, nothing to do with trim

I have a set of those and use them when I trailer the boat long distances. Seem to work great.

Me too. Agreed

These clips are great - they show me boats for sale that I need to avoid/don't bother calling on LOL. 9/10, owners who install these clips (or worse, use straps) are owners who have a trim pump that has failed, and rather than paying to get it fixed, added these tabs so they can trailer the boat home (or sell online... the drive will stay up for a short time if your pump has a slow pressure leak.. long enough for the unsuspecting buyer to not notice) These clips are *not* needed on these drives unless something has already failed. It does not hurt the rams to leave them up, does not affect seals, does not add to 'strain' (which btw is nothing compared to the strain put on it when the boat is under power) etc. Furthermore, you shouldn't long-term store your boat with the drive up anyway. But not because of the hydraulics - because of the bellows. You want to store drive-down so the bellows are in their compressed state. If you have a slow leak on your trim pump, and haven't had a chance to fix it yet, but still want to use your boat, then yes, these are handy as they'll ensure your drive doesn't leak-down while trailering home. It's also not a BAD idea for long-distance traveling - avoid what happened to a friend of mine - inflatable fell over in the boat, landed on the trim switch.. which dropped the drive all the way down on the freeway... didn't notice until they got to their destination.. you can guess how that vacation went! These tabs would have prevented that. Probably would have still resulted in a fried pump and/or dead battery.. but better than a missing lower-end...

for winter storage the drive should be all the way down not exposing the exhaust to the weather

The holes are for fastening them together, so they don't get lost, at the ramp. They're generic parts, avail at any boat shop or Cabella's. Very simple, they just take the load of the stern off the rams so the seals aren't damaged. Everyone should use them. There is no rust issue.?.

I wouldn’t rust damaging the surface of the hydraulic cylinders. This is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

how?

@@clayton8465 I agree. Only really helpful if you have a trim pump that's leaking-down (which you should just get fixed rather than getting these tabs.) I've also seen owners with these forget to remove them after launching their boat. Which makes for a few good laughs while they figure out while the drive isn't going down :)
