Rolex has a maximum deviation of 4 spd (-2 to +2) while Omega METAS certified watches have 0 to 5 spd or a max deviation of 5 spd. When asked why, Omega commented that Swiss trains are very punctual so you don’t want a slow watch :) Also many watch owners prefer their watches to run fast as all you need to do is pull out the crown, wait a few seconds and then push it back in.

Nice job being the only video (that I've seen so far) that covers the new Spirate system and the super racing watch and actually explain the new system. So many click bait videos came out immediately after the announcement, only to show photos of the watch and say it's equipped with the new system, but not actually explain it. Can't knock them for trying to be one of the first videos out... that's just how they get the views.

While this is an admirable technical advance, Omega needs to be working on reducing the thickness of their automatic movements so that they wear better. The tri-level co-axial is the reason for the thickness in the movements, so baking in the new balance spring mechanism to the tri-level movement just means thicker movements for years to come.

@richardjohnson559
@richardjohnson559 Жыл бұрын
Omega’s 8900 movement is actually thinner than Rolexes 3235, so thickness is probably more to do with design, although the sapphire case back adds some thickness.
@willburrows8834
@willburrows8834 Жыл бұрын
@@richardjohnson559 you are right on that. Is the 9300 thicker than the 4130 though (I don’t know). It’s the Omega automatic chronographs that seem to have the thickness problem. The sapphire case back must have some impact (like on the Seamaster range you can account for that extra mm in the 8900 v the 3235 Sub), but the two counter speedys are significantly thicker than a Daytona. The Seamaster chronographs are like burgers, but they look incredible.

It's worth noting that the concentricity of silicon is superior to alternatives, which is why Rolex needs the Breguet overcoil and Omega hasn't needed one. Breguet does use a silicon hairspring with an overcoil, but it's really just to pay homage to the brand.
@TheRunningManZ
@TheRunningManZ Жыл бұрын
What about when you need a new one in 20years because there is no repairing silicon springs? It’s something I’ve heard Tim Mosso talk about a lot, regarding future potential issues with silicon springs and longevity. Maybe less so for huge brands like Omega perhaps. But will they keep spares for 30 years, 50 years?
@bluebox303
@bluebox303 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRunningManZ 'When you need a new one in 20 years,' mate, there are still watches that run from 2 centuries ago without needing a new balance spring. You won't need a new balance spring unless you seriously damage your movement, in which case you'll need more than just that spring. In any case, very few watchmakers can even make conventional balance springs from scratch, so even typical 'nivarox' springs are just as 'irreplaceable' as silicon. This is just FUD spread by companies without access to silicon. Regardless, Omega still makes new versions of parts for movements from the 60s and 50s, which even Rolex doesn't do for their 1570-calibre watches from the 70s, so parts availability should really not be that high on your concern if you're buying an Omega. Rather focus on the size, price, and whether it matches your aesthetic sensibilities.
@TheRunningManZ
@TheRunningManZ Жыл бұрын
@@bluebox303 the "when" wasnt really meant to say everyone will need one. More of a "what if." I kinda trust Tim Mosso on this one, he certainly is no Rolex fanboy and offers a balanced view IMO. He doesn't say there is an issue but for some brands (not likely Omega) it could be.

Great video on the technology, but once again, like others,I think you only covered part of it. Why this technology really does take it to Rolex, is it’s ability to be regulated with a specialized tool in the boutique. So while at Rolex, the only reasons to go into an AD is to 1) Grovel for a watch and build a relationship with the AD, 2) Drop off a watch for a good month or more for a repair or service, or 3) pick up a watch a pay a ton of money- at Omega, they now have a reason for you to stop in and fine tune your watch at any time. They get to build a relationship with you and you to your watch by showing just how accurate it is. And they can then show you all of the other watches they have that you can actually buy. Obviously no one needs this extra level of accuracy, this is about consumer experience. Omega has worked very hard to expand their boutiques and access points, now they have proprietary in store service that is another reason to come in and continue to build relationship to them and appreciation for your watch and it’s accuracy.

a well done vid here, thanks! I have the Omega "J. Bond" Seamaster 300 Chronometer model acquired like 15 years ago. no co-axial, no silicon, no stupid "007" markings. did Bond ever wear one with "007" and a gun barrel spiral on the dial of his watch? 🤣you know, I'd certainly wear a Mickey Mouse watch for the comedy factor so I guess you decide 🙂 but I digress, what I want to say is that my Omega is slim *and* a diver, (ok, a desk-diver, but still a diver). there's no question in my mind that mine still blows away the clunky and snooty comparable rolexes then and to this day, *and* for far less bucks. I consider this bumble-bee Omega Speedmaster kinda colorful and quirky, just like I like my watches. once again, I consider that this one's design, elegance, and performance, once again top rolex, and once again for less. it's just that it's not that far-less anymore. so I'll do what I did will all my other watches, wait for when the bottom of the inevitable bathtub price curve stabilizes before considering adding an A-condition example to my collection. somehow I like better to wear a timepiece when I know its value is appreciating 🙂I actually am between chronometers at this time, this one would be nice 🐝 if you really want to keep time then I highly recommend a Seiko that includes the unique "spring drive." there are many models to suit your style. the GMT type is my thing and I just love it. in terms of performance, compared to how O and R compete, it's like a formula 1 driver watching kids in a soap-box race. it's the same seconds tolerance on a Seiko, only per month versus the Os and the Rs trying to keep it together per day. besides the technology, I'll say Seiko also tops them both in style and attention to detail. if you're comparing these three brands you're not in a race of performance, Seiko has won years ago and went home when the others are still on the track. the race you're in is one of bragging rights. well, there's my take. happy timekeeping everyone 😎

Kudos to Omega for raising the bar on accuracy. I do have a bee in my bonnet however: there was of course a lot of buzz when the teaser showed up on social media, and my AD and I agreed that our best guess was that Omega had finally decided to join the 70 hour power reserve club, which would have bee-n, useful. Alas, that will need to wait for another anniversary, perhaps the 70th anniversary of the moon landing in 2039? For effectively 5 grand extra here in North America, you get 5 extra hours on top of the Seamaster, but if we're winding the watch anyway, may-bee the 1000 dollars per hour extra reserve isn't that important? In all seriousness, I'm excited about the movement and the watch because regardless of anything else, in a world where striving for excellence seems to have taken a back seat to doing less and achieving phenomenal malaise, Omega are, in fact striving for excellence. If I was to spend that sort of money on a Speedy, however, I'd be spending a little more on a 321, and constantly walk around with the watch off my wrist looking at that beautiful Sedna gold movement through the exhibition case back!

Can I ask why bigger power reserve is so important to you? So many claim the importance of this, I'm starting to believe they have no objective understanding of what the point of it all is.

@@ALL-il1sw people with a few watches wanting the one they take off to still be ticking when they put it back on in a few days I guess?
@ALL-il1sw

@@TheRunningManZ still ticking is the common answer, but nobody seems to consider, is it still accurate at that point? No mechanical watch maintains accuracy over the full PR range, so if you have to pull the crown to adjust the time anyway, what's the point? Arguing that someone desires a watch because of greater PR in hours is elementary if the watches perform differently in respect to duration of accuracy.

@@ALL-il1sw If you're buying a watch because it's better than 0/+5 or -2/+2, and that is the thing that matters more, I'm not sure you're clear on what is useful in a luxury watch. If you really need to make that appointment on time, it's probably best to check your phone... that you set your watch by, which is receiving a GPS signal, which uses three atomic clocks for synchronization... If you have a 38 or 55 hour power reserve watch, and a 70, then you'll understand how nice it is to have the 70.

@@ALL-il1sw I guess people buying the watch in the video think it’s cool how accurate it is. In reality the watch on your wrist can out by about 20secs a day and it will still do the job. For some people just putting it on and then it’s working is important. If you have 10 watches or something power reserve is kinda meaningless apart from if you have like a Monday to Friday daily wearer in a collection. It matters to some I guess.

Personally, I find the dial to much of everything. But that is my preference. Some people might find it super 👌 😄 I like the technological upgrade. However, comparing Omega to Rolex is a comedy. But I did notice a video where they put Rolex next to Patek Philippe, AP etc that was hilarious 😂 😃 An Austrian, WatchAdvisor, I think did a lovely video on that topic.

Omega fans concern themselves with “smashing” Rolex way too much. Omega and Rolex have 2 very different goals in watchmaking and 2 very different audiences.

I may be mad but I think you have to factor zero into the accuracy deviation which means the Rolex also has a 5 secs per day deviation just apportioned differently over minus and plus. Please tell me I'm not utterly insane.

This reminds me of a story I heard on this show . Back when Rolex and Omega were trying to increase their depth ratings. Omega got all fancy and made some sort of liquid metal thing while Rolex simply just made the crystal thicker there by increasing the depth rating by simple means

You can't just increase the thickness of the crystal without having a knock on effect to other components of the watch, so it's more complicated than that. Just another Rolex myth.

My daily watch omega 2018 seamaster. I love it. Always getting comments. Possitive etc but before i wore a rolex date just gold. Always got. Is it real and people thinking are they worth it. Got boring. That super racing is my next watch for my weekend and special occasion piece. Classy sporty a quality build. I know a guy has one. Stunning and its accurate to better than rolex three times the cost .. ❤
