Great, great review...plus your enthusiasm is infectious! In 1988 I bought a used 1970 Omega Speedmaster Professional from a mom & pop jewelry store in Manhattan for $375. I ended up selling it on eBay for almost $2,000 in 2008. At the time it needed about $800 in repairs. It did have the upgraded skeleton back and the modern bracelet. I loved that watch and vowed to buy another. However I purchased a Bulova Moon Watch that I absolutely love. It looks like a combo of the Speedmaster Professional and the Speedmaster Mark 2. I recently walked into Tourneau in Manhattan to peruse. A 20-year salesman noticed my Bulova and asked which Speedmaster model it was. I told him that it was a Bulova Moon Watch and he was blown away. The build quality on the Bulova Moon Watch is superb, and the 262 khz Precisionist movement more accurate than any watch that doesn't have an Atomic movement. To top it off, hit the chronograph button and the chronograph second hand sweeps like a manual or automatic. The dial is magnificent with layers of detail. A friend also has the Alpha Speedmaster "homage". Honestly, I don't know how Alpha does it for under $200? It has a manual wind movement that is really nice. Honestly it's pretty difficult to comprehend spending $5,000 on the Speedy with these two alternatives.

For sport watches, hacking does make more scene, more so a chronograph. It's nice to see the chrono sec hand runs in sync with the sub sec hand for precision. Also, lateral clutch has more wear and tear, and, need to mentioned that the chrono function should not run continuously. In price comparison, the seiko 8R48 has a column wheel vertical clutch, and, the unique 3 pointed hammer and heart-shaped cam ensures the perfect synchronization of the hands flyback function at pin-point. My srq031 which cost less than 3k has Zaratsu finishing, and, it's accurate to 3 spd. The 2mm protruding glass, interestingly, makes the watch looks compact (30mm dial). The fine soft cordovan straps wears so comfortable. I like this better than my daytona. Just stunning 😁

Hi, I bought the same legendary moonwatch but with sapphire glass version, almost 2 years ago and still loving it. It is a fantastic piece and has become my favorit until now. Try using it with the nato strap, it gives a kind of special tactical look on your watch.

I’ve wanted this model for the longest time! Fascinated by space, the moon, the Apollo missions all of my life I’d still love one. But watching this model skyrocket over the last several years has put it out of reach. Suffice to say I “settled” for a Bulova Moon watch chronograph just over 12-18 months ago. And WOW!!! Firstly it too got a guernsey on an Apollo mission... Ok so not officially😉 Secondly this homage is bloody awesome & stunning. For around $800 it is a damn good compromise! So I’ll just chip away, save my pennies & hopefully before too long I’ll get my personal “Holy Grail”... Great vid as always Jody👍🏼😎

The most noticeable "feature" of this watch to me is how reflective the stainless bezel is. Everytime it caught the light behind your camera the entire bezel lit up like it was lume or flashing...that was really impressive. I mean it's nothing revolutionary, but I've never seen a watch change its appearance that much. Pretty cool. I actually find the dial quite busy, for some reason the chronograph hand always draws my attention. Neat story though, and super cool watch. Looking forward to the next one!

Great review. For my taste, walked the line perfectly between recognizing the history of this but still pointing out the attributes that might not make this the watch for everyone. I think it's stunning, and it used to be my grail. However, between my small wrists, not being a chronograph guy, and, when I'm being honest, preferring the modern conveniences of an automatic movement and a sapphire crystal, if I ever step up to a luxury watch, I'd probably wind up (pun not intended) getting something else. From the few higher-end watches I've handled in person, a smaller Tudor Black Bay or Ranger or an Oris Sixty Five come to mind first. Loved both of those so much more than I expected.

One of my favourite watches of all time. The MKII pro is actually my favourite - the moon watch that never made it to the moon. Omega had addressed some of the issues with the original watch design for space use but NASA couldn't be arsed testing it and stuck to the original.

This is probably my favorite chronograph; it's stripped down to it's bare essentials, with no detail on the dial that's not planned and thought out to make it clearer and more usable, and the bracelet is amazing. Really, the only knock on it is the water resistance; at over $3,000, I'd expect it to at least have 100m.

The Omega De Ville Tressor (25200bph, 60 hrs power reserve chronometer) is an example of a fine watch. For a connoisseur, A CENTRE THREE HANDS manual winding mechanism is the best of watches, with long minute hand, and an even longer second hand. Usually in Patek or Lange, we only see two hands or sub second hand manual winding watches. They reserved the CTH for their finest pieces. All good watch maker must have this caliber in their stable to be considered good. This kind of watch is very rare in the Swiss industry. Try find one in a Rolex and see what you get? But, strange, the Japanese made this kind of watches long ago, and, it seems like only Gerald Donovan who is aware of it, haha....For the vintage, you can even find the CTH manual wind done in 36,000 hi-beat, commonly found in Grand and King Seiko. For new GS, there's the SBGW series, the latest being the SBGW231. With 24 jewels, 72 power reserve, and mine is accurate to 1 sec in 3 days. And, the finishing is better than my Nautilus, both inside and out, including the finishing of the mechanism. But, the Nautilus, being auto, is not a True CTH. For a budget CTH, there's the Orient Monarch. It's specs are similar to the Rolex 6694, only that it top the Rolex with hacking function. The basis of a good auto mechanism is a good manual mechanism. Collecting watches is so much fun if one understand this basic principle.

I just seen this, a bit late I know but I have to address the WR issue with Speedmasters. I have had my speedy new since 1985. Its absolutely up to swimming and showering submerging, no problem . I suspect, like IWC and their 60m WR it is a true 50 0r 60m depth . Just needed to be said I think. I also think that the 'story' is not what got me going, despite my 7 decades. It has always been a really good watch and begs the question; how good does a mechanical watch need to be? For me this is an icon as the old Subs were. I have a 16610 (1991), which I have owned and worn since new , on a rotation with the speedy. The speedy is consistently +3 and the Sub +1. I think they just made them to last and work well without all the parachrom hair springs and alike and all that silly ceramic nonsense and lume that lasts forever. Give me good old tritium and patina every day

@nicholasdavies87955 жыл бұрын
Hi John, yes it worked fully in the vacuum of space and was worn outside the spacesuit. It was sealed ( as in water resistance ) . It's a wind up watch so the effects of space wouldn't interfere with its movement hence it was manually wound up and not automatic . An automatic watch wouldn't have kept time as the zero gravity would have hindered the rotor . Hope that helps !

My GRAIL Jody. To me, it looks better with the Omega custom Speedmaster Leather Rally strap, also much more comfortable. After all, this timepiece was originally designed to be an Auto Racing Chronograph. I will own one... It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine!

I have the Dark Side Of The Moon (all ceramic case), I don't wear it often but every time I do everyone loves it...I want to pick up the Grey Side version at some point but it is way down the list of purchases,

I prefer Sturmanskies, they are about 3 grand cheaper for a watch thats been in space. Great review none the less.

I'm conflicted when it comes to value of Speedy Pro: antiquated movement, plastic hands, so-so bracelet and surprising thickness for an manual on one hand. On the other same 3500$ buys you a IWC Mark XVIII with a (beep) ETA2892 or SW300. Or a Panerai with modified Unitas, but we all know "Paneristi" is Italian for "Makes bad decisions".

Can you tell me where you bought your automatic watch winders from please.I'd like to get some for my watches. I've never seen them before. Very handy.

The watch is a classic but I don't know what it is but maybe personally I need a date as the minimum complication. Without a date I just cannot do. Lol look at me talking like I am just about to go and buy the date version of this omega. Maybe someday but until then. Keep it coming Jody!

I need a date to. So I use the second hand of the chronograph and stop it on the minute that stands for the acual date. The other benefit is that this way I can see the nice Omega logo almost always ;-)

Taragaca oh wow! I never thought of doing this with my chronographs! Of course I will have to set it everyday but that just a matter of pushing the start stop button once. Thats an awesome way of looking at chronographs :) I'm impressed! Thanks mate!

A date ruins the look. The auto versions with date don't look right.

You're welcome! I am glad if it helps :-)

I've been debating for years over getting the Omega Seamaster or the Moon watch (the real one! With the hesalite). Still can't make up my mind.
