A miracle binds a nun to a gas station employee.
HOLY MOSES is used with permission from Eli Powers. Learn more at horsegodproduc....
A nun in 1960s Northern Ireland has been sent to a Catholic "Magdalene asylum" for fallen women, as a result of an unplanned pregnancy. She has feelings of ill-boding that plague her, as well as her own existential fears and crises. One day after confession, she ventures into a snowy field to tend to a cow, only to have it vanish in thin air.
Decades later in West Texas in 1989, the cow reappears at a gas station, along with a strangely burning bush near the gas station. The cow is apparently from Ireland, and the fire never goes out, throwing the inhabitants of this small town into a state of befuddlement at the mystery unfolding before them. And when they're invaded by some kind of official unit on the trail of the cow, they realize there just might be something bigger at work -- and an unexpected connection -- beyond their own comprehension.
Starring iconic MEAN GIRLS and MAMMA MIA actress Amanda Seyfried, this dramatic short by writer-director Eli Powers is about miracles, mystery and magic, achieving a remarkable mastery of tone and mood through stellar craftsmanship and genuine vision.
Though it features captivating images and beautifully subtle performances by both Seyfried and actor Thomas Sadoski, it won't an easy film for audiences used to straightforward stories that resolve into tidy packages. But if viewers can give themselves over to the potent blend of storytelling, imagery, sound and performance, it will reward them with a memorable experience of wry humor and expansive spirit.
The film has a sense of the spellbinding, which is built foremost through its luminous, arresting imagery. The content of the images themselves is both whimsical and humble, but the quality of light and the precise framing emphasizes an otherworldliness that suffuses the surfaces of the ordinary life portrayed. The visual approach reflects the writing's balance of ethereal grace and human confusion, which persists despite what seems to be a miracle happening in front of their eyes.
The structure of the storytelling is ambitious in how it traverses time and place, opening up huge narrative questions right at the start of the film's captivating opening sequence. Some of them are answered, but those answers lead to more questions and mysteries. In many ways, it feels like the beguiling opening movement of a feature, which makes sense: Powers and his producers (including Seyfried) intend the short as a proof-of-concept for a larger story. But as a standalone work, it functions almost like a haiku, packing an evocation of hugeness and transcendence within a remarkable economy of elements.
HOLY MOSES is, in many ways, a mystical film, in the sense that it is about the mystery, doubt and the unknowability of life, and how we live the questions often without any concrete answers. Singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen once said, "There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in."
In many ways, this is a story about spiritual possibility seeping into the fissures of earthbound life, our own human reactions to it, clouded by our preoccupations and concerns -- and the slow recognition of hidden beauty and connections across time and space. The final moments offer a tantalizing reveal that teases at another connection between its two disparate halves, but it also feeds the sense of a strange, lovely magic at work in the world behind worlds -- a mysterious place that endows depth and wonderment to everyday life, and gives grace to the most ordinary of moments.

Justice explained at the end of the film. God may choose the simple and the insignificant to reveal wonders or to do special works. Note the irony, a "pregnant" nun? She confesses she likes booze, and swears! She sees a vision of a cow standing in a field who vanishes before her eyes. Then 24 years later, Justice sees a burning bush; and that same sickly dying cow appears before him. The story suggests that Justice is the son of the nun. He was likely given-up for adoption. He's a special, but simple, man. The resentful priest at the end is angry that God chose a "simpleton" to reveal a miracle. He extinguished the flame in his wicked pride; but his phony holiness wasn't worthy of the miracle shown to a simple guy who believes. The powers of darkness do everything possible to deny or disprove God's existence. Thus the evil priest shows up!

This start in Ireland 1963. Than Texas 1989. I believe Justice was the son of the pregnant nun. In the bible Moses was “put” in the river and adopted by Pharaohs daughter. Through the Pharaoh's daughter (identified as Queen Bithia in the Midrash), the child was adopted as a foundling from the Nile river and grew up with the Egyptian royal family. After killing an Egyptian slave-master who was beating a Jew, Moses fled across the Red Sea to Midian, where he encountered the Angel of the Lord,[cow] speaking to him from within a burning bush on Mount Horeb, which he regarded as the Mountain of God.

She was his momma... He was her miracle. And he was shown that burning Bush and dead cow to make him believe his own worth.. his importance in this world. I am often rooted out by trolls who are cruel and nasty whenever I give my interpretation of a film. But that's all it is. MY interpretation. I could be dead wrong about it. But it was really a good film. The burning Bush effects weren't my favorite but maybe they were meant to be that way..

She's not actually a nun -- she's being punished for having gotten pregnant out of wedlock. The Ulster Magdalene Asylum and Episcopal Chapel operated from 1839 until some time in the 1960s -- as an asylum for wayward women, generally women who were pregnant out of wedlock, women involved in prostitution and others convicted of petty crimes. The actual (forced labor) at the asylum was the operation of a steam laundry. Not cattle. I assume that the sense of impending doom she feels is that she will die in child birth -- and that the child is Justice. Or perhaps it has something to do with John F Kennedy, who visited Ireland in 1963... and was assassinated later that year. Justice first sees the cow through a glass darkly (1 Corinthians 13:12) and then face to face. And then Justice encounters a burning bush very much as Moses did in Exodus chapter 3. I find it amusing that the church extinguishes the burning bush, because of Proverbs 21:15 "When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers."

He is Moses, and God sent him a message from his mother to confirm that. His mother was a nun who had a child, so she probably gave him to a family secretly. That's why he's in America, the burning bush represents the call from god to lead the Israelites to freedom, but in this case I think it refers to leading all people to freedom from the patriarchy.

This was ...a riddle in a riddle. I love riddles. I got to the end and had no idea. I sat and stared. Watched again. Ok, here goes: My thinking is like others’ that Justice, 26-ish, is the nun’s son. The symbols are the law, the healers, the government, and the church. The miracles are the burning bush and somehow the disappearing, dying cow(s?). Perhaps the cows represent nature, disappearing, dying; perhaps in their combined disappearance and death are the evil, 666. The nun represents the honest, imperfect seeker of what is actually right and good; the seeker of God who also sees the bad that is to come. She acknowledges her flaws and asks for forgiveness. The priest, though, is absent. The priest - representative of the church - is supposed to be the way to God, but he/it is missing in action. Justice - aptly named - is simple, also honest, also seeking and open to the truth even in ugly ways. Perhaps he is also Holy Moses as some have stated - the unlikely messenger of deliverance. Justice. Justice bears the blood of the dead, the agony of the stressed and tormented. But Justice is not the killer. Justice sees the burning bush, which is representative of God, truth, whatever people might call it. Justice simply acknowledges it; the others - science, law, church, and government - try and fail to explain it, deny that it exists despite witnessing it themselves, and ultimately extinguish it. “Nothing to see here,” either because it can’t be explained or because people like Justice don’t deserve to experience it. But Justice understands what can’t be understood. Justice is the child of the seeker. They say seek truth, but beware those who say they have found it. I believe in God because I have learned that I need God, not because I am holy. I respect God because everything about life is a crazy paradox that science and government can’t explain. I love God because art like this can’t begin to imitate the life I’ve witnessed. I am the pregnant nun. The simple daydreamer. I deserve nothing and I have earned nothing. Moses didn’t want to be a leader, so God chose him to lead. We are nobody and God makes us somebody when we’re just here - like Stephen Covey said - to love, to serve, and to try again. Just my thoughts; I don’t intend to offend those who think differently. 💌

Exodus 3:1-4:17 "Angel number 333 is reserved for special messages from your guardian angel in response to your prayers." "And the LORD did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died: but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one." Exodus 9:6 "God would speak to Moses face to face, like someone would speak to his friend. Then he would return to the camp. But his attendant, Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not leave the tent. Joshua never moved from the tent."& "Joshua was appointed as Moses' successor." ...and if Justice is the English version of a name Joshua, that would be neat.

The nun was pregnant, and the gas station attendant was her son. The burning bush appeared before Moses and God spoke to him, telling him that He would have him speak to the Hebrews about what to do. Moses was not only poor, but had a horrible stutter. But God often chooses the most unlikely people to work through. The cow could represent a number of things: one of the plagues God sent to the Eqyptians was death to cattle. Also, the cow may have been a sacrifice, as they used to do for God during the same time. The man in the car was the priest the mom was confessing to, who was sent through space and time during the confession. His part was representing corruption, greed, and power in the Catholic church, which are all evil. The point is that miracles are for every believer, and that God favors the poor, the weak, the humble. Thankfully, the son did NOT listen to the message of the priest. He knew what he saw, and he knew that God did that to show him his worth as His own child.

Interpreting this is meant to be simple. Every unexplainable event in this was a miracle. (1) A pregnant nun, (2) A disappearing cow, (3) a burning bush, which in biblical narrative the burning bush is the location where God appointed appointed Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.... SO a son of a sinning nun, who some would describe as being VERY simpleminded was the first to witness the burning bush and this occurred only once in history - biblical history. Justice is a very special man and as we can see he is a believer of miracles

Just.. simply beautiful ! There could be different meanings and intrpretions based on each person and his believe , as a Muslim the story of the cow "and it's the second chapter and the longest one in our Qur'an" (and it was described as bright yellow cow in the holy Quran) belongs to the prophet Moses peace be upon him story , and the fire was the first thing he saw with his family when they were looking for a place and that's when God almighty spoke directly to him without even sending angel Gabriel , but God chose Moses and that's why his ppl are called شعبُ اللّه المختار God's chosen people . But did that scene with the priest was to refer to that time when the holy prophet was slightly arrogant with a disabled believer(blind) {عبس وتولى عندما جاءه الاعمى} ? Idk , and the 333 maybe Christians can understand it , it might mean a verse in the holy Bible or the holy Torah , God knows ✨

So when the black chevy suburban and the van and sedan roll up, those are 2010ish models, much newer than that what existed in 1989. What that due to budget restrictions or something, or a deliberate detail (after all the priest in the sedan seemed to be teleported directly from the past, so maybe government entities from the future are also at play).

This is my understanding: the cow represents fate or a miracle. Fate has jumped over time dimensions as the scenes jump from the future and past (time travel). All the things represent something like the fire, cow, the ones who took out the fire and etc. even the characters couldn’t comprehend it but it seems their lives were connected. Since the story doesn’t make sense with our eyes, I look at it in a spiritual and psychological level. Seeing that it had something with god it might be inferences from the Bible. That’s what I could only figure out of the story but who knows.

I like the movie stigmata. It’s basically about a woman who gets possessed by this holy man from the past to finish his gospel. I’m not sure if it’s actually his gospel or he was chosen by Jesus to tell the world they basically don’t need the church to worship god. In the movie the church tries to kill the possessed woman for fear the message will be known to the public. I personally believe god and Jesus does not care about where you worship them just that you do. The church is corrupted. Maybe not the lower priest but the higher ups it’s all about money. If you are truly a person of god you wouldn’t be living in big house with lots money that you received from donations to the church.

I hope that Amanda is a good Christian. A lot of Hollywood films blaspheme God and His Word. I have read that she is christian but I'm not sure how much she practices and if it meant she is a denominational christian or a true Christian. Nevertheless, I love her always and support her decisions unless it mocks God.

I am absolutely confused. Why a cow? What does it symbolise? What does the cow dying infront of the nun and in front of Justice suggest? What did the never ending burning bush mean? Why did the man in the black car say that what he saw inside wasn't meant for him? Someone explain! I'm confused by the comments too!😢😢

Weird as it may be. God is not far away. Jesus is as real as He's been all eternity. Whenever He does some miracle or sign in your life.... Start serving Him and you're in for real life. Yes, there are rules. You'll find them on the Bible. And you find also that God does different things with different people. No copies but real life. I started a long way ago. And real life is still going on. And my obedience to the Bible is still growing. God's will equals happiness for your soul. And lots of people need happiness for their souls. Shalom.

An a smoke of bad research behind a story. Horrible costuming also. No nun would ever have a three week gap in confession or be loving in a convent with this girl’s attitude. If your characters dint ring true, the story falls apart.

After watching thus for 2nd time my comment i right. But now as i watched the cow entered into the gas station store. But Justice had blood over him as if he killed it. And then saw the burning bush. He is the nuns son and i feel he was sent to that place to be watched. In the middle if nowhere. Did his mom see him being taken from her, did she die after giving birth, what was the bad going to happen. I want more of this story now. 👍👍
