*Fun fact* - The shoot for this video took way longer than expected, and everybody was getting bored, so Siobhan (the second female performer) went for a wander within the town, found a bar and got absolutely smashed on vodka. When she showed up to do her part she could barely stand up, but they went with it and the result was brilliantly and hilariously over the top.

Shakespears Sister was made up of Siobhan Fahey (pronounced Shivaun) and Marcella Detroit. Marcella is the high voice. The chap on the gurney is dying, Marcella is begging for him to stay with her. Siobhan appears as Death come to take him. They fight over him and Marcella wins as the chap revives and Siobhan walks away, cynically smiling. Superb song, superbly sung, excellent video, unique. Glad you enjoyed it - it's a video that I can watch multiple times, it's so very enjoyable.

I didn't know that Siobhan Fahey had married Dave Stewart! They have two sons. Saw pictures of them with Annie Lennox! I also heard that Siobhan was extremely Drunk and high on pot and that's why she's acting like she was. I Love her walking down the stairs with her head tilted and smiling.....reminds me of something out of a Horror Movie! Lol.... I love how they're fighting for him. Her Eye roll and wave of the hand, walking back up the stairs......like, bye. She ya later!

The woman who plays Death(Siobhan Maire Fahey) was also a member of the band Bananarama which put out hits like Cruel Summer, Venus, and I Hear a Rumor. She also married and later divorced the male part of the duo Dave Stewart of The Eurthymics.. The irony is when Death rolls her eyes it was like: you won now but you can't win forever.

The story that goes with this song is interesting. A little spaceship with a dying man and yet the lyrics can be interpreted in many ways. I had a completely different take on this song 15 years ago. Losing many friends to allures of illicit narcotics had to be brought out in the open and discussed in our surrounding area. So I decided to speak up in my community to bring the issue to the forefront of our epidemic. Wasn't liked by the ones who wanted to sweep our city's issue under the rug. Certainly was marked by the ones doing it to our community. Honestly, the ones who gravitated to what needed to be told was the ones crying for help who were on the rug knocked out cold with a needle in their arms. God I love them so much. They rallied around the call and came to my aid. It was the power of the ones in need who actually kept me from being eliminated, if you know what I mean, by the ones who were behind the pandemic. 15 years now and our city is so much cleaner and full of LIFE and we all are thriving to stay that way to include the ones who allowed the rug to be lumpy in the first place. This was an eight weeks UK #1 in spring 1992. Not the 80s, though Shakespears Sister started in 1988. Try their first hit "You're History" from 1989 🙂

Hi James, I'm a new subscriber. I spent my whole day yesterday watching your reaction videos whilst doing my day to day activities. I love your reactions and when you played a song and said I don't know if I'm going to like this on some I smiled because I knew what was coming and that you would. I loved this song back in the day. The lady playing death was bored before filming and apparently smoked weed and had a lot of drinks beforehand and was intoxicated she stumbled at the top of the stairs but production liked the effect and kept it in the video. 😊

Marcella was very drunk when she did her part. She also was upset at the notoriety Siobhan received, as the roles in this song were reversed from their usual music. They broke up and didn't talk for more than 20 years

I've always had a different take. I thought the man on the bed had attempted to take his own life ("If this world is wearing thin") and his girlfriend/wife is trying to keep him alive, while Death is trying to take him. Only recently did I read the song was based on a film where the man is from Earth and the women are from the planet he has landed on.

I always thought it was something like that too, the next line being “and you’re thinking of escape” and later “when your pride is on the floor.” It’s one of my favorite things about music, everyone can feel something different and get something different out of it. That final eye roll from Siobhan/Death always gets to me. Pure "Fine. Have some more fun with him. He'll be mine in the end anyway. As will everyone else." A job well done there, really. That woman did not appreciate her man until Death threatened to take him away. I mean... "When your pride is on the floor, I'll make you beg for more."? Hell. That whole second verse. Abusive, obsessive, selfish(a bit of that in first verse as well). If this near death experience does not change her attitude... I feel sorry for the dude.
