For high quality tinned seafood like Nuri Sardines? I mince up 2-3 Garlic Cloves, the upper half of a Celery Rib, 1 small Shallot, a 1 inch by 3 inches (a side) of a Red Pepper, and partially open the tin of Sardines (or other tinned seafood) and pour just the Olive Oil (and I only do it with Olive Oil) in to a pan heated to medium flame, sauté the minced Veg until the Shallot and Celery are translucent, I then put portions of Sardine (or other tinned seafood) on to a slice of a good French Baguette about 3/8 of an inch thick, then put a portion of the Veg on top of that, then either a small amount of grated or shaved Parmesan Cheese and put it in an oven 350f for about 8-10 minutes, pull and Drizzle some Balsamic Vinegar over it. This is a modified version of Oysters Bienville, but it does work with all seafood. For Vegetarian Friends, use just Olive Oil and skip the cheese, or use a bit of grilled Tofu or a strip of roasted Portabella Mushroom. I honestly love the roasted strip of Portabella Mushroom myself with Parmesan Cheese. Most folks who eat it, top it with a dash of Tabasco. Works great with Fresh Seafoods too.

I tried Nuri sardines in plain olive oil about a week ago and they were the best plain sardines I've ever tried, by a large margin, at least 20% better than the nearest competitor. Firm, tasty. And then I tried their tomato sauce sardines, and they're even better! Nice spicy bite. Now I can't wait to try the spicy olive oil version. They're not cheap but they're worth it. What to do with Nuri's is to use the oil from the Sardines to fry some onion, green pepper and zucchini in a frying with a little more olive oil, then dump some precooked spaghetti over the fried vegetable and add 3 or 4 crushed garlic cloves and then breakup the sardines and mix with all the ingredients. You might to drizzle a little more olive oil when serving plus you can use freshly grated parmesan cheese to complete the dish.

Yes, Nuri is a very definite step up from regular supermarket sardines. It has everything to do with quality of the fish and the quality of the olive oil they use which make such a difference in flavor. And, yes, the price of a can of Nuri has gotten uncomfortable. They used to be regularly available in Spanish/Portuguese markets in my area for around $2.99, but the price has nearly doubled in the last 5 years. I always keep a few around but they are a treat at this price. FYI, Trader Joe's has Portuguese sardines in a purplish tin for $1.99. They are not Nuri-level but they are pretty good.

Nuri sardines do have a great flavor and texture. I think it's due to their vapor heat method of cooking/canning. The one thing I'm not sure about is the veracity of olive oil used exclusively. It may be just my taste, but I got the feeling the oil may have included a mix with canola or other seed oil, so I drained all oil before eating. Suggestion for an additional sardine-like item to try is the Wild Planet White Anchovies. These are like mini-sardines, and they have a bit more delicate taste and a little different texture. These are not like your salted anchovies in the little bottles or tiny little tins. White anchovies are packed just like sardines and are great add-ons for salads. Not salty at all - unless you add salt.

As a bit of a sardine connoisseur my self, I've been buying some at Costco called "Wild Catch" and they are pretty good. For about $10 per 6 can box you get nicely smoked sardines in EVO and are quite firm and tasty.

@@SardineExpedition Depends on what you buy, the ones in spring water are good, where the ones in mustard are kind of mushy and not very mustardy, but the ones in hot sauce are pretty spicy. At a $1.30ish? a can, they arent great but not bad.

When I was a kid, I used to dig in the pantry and find my dad's stash of 39¢ cans of Neptune brand sardines packed in mustard and have a fine feast of mustard-y sardines and crackers. So delicious. That was almost 60 years ago. I have loved sardines ever since, and out of all that time, the Nuri brand of spiced sardines are the best I've ever tasted. In my view, they don't even have a close competitor. Fun fact: the cannery where they pack these has been using the same method of processing and packing them by hand for more than a hundred years. The cannery is featured in a KZbin video if you do some searching. Nuri spiced brand is sardine heaven for aficionados. What's the acronym? IYKYK?

Compared to some of the well known top end rated sardines from those brands these are actually pretty reasonably priced for what you get, especially when others are two or three times the price and more, There not cheap but the quality is there and the oil is always nice and thick.

I have never had sardines. Do you eat the scales and skin? Do they eat the spine?
@SardineExpedition18 күн бұрын
For the most part, canned sardines don’t have scales. The sprats/brislings/pilchards have the bones/skin/spine, but you really don’t notice it when eating. If you don’t want bones/skin you could try the boneless skinless sardines. You’ll miss out on some of the health benefits though without the skin/bones though. Boneless skinless tend to have more of a tuna taste/texture. My favorite are smoked brislings, but I enjoy all of them.

I like sardines but I’m very sensitive to the bones sometimes found in them. Could you recommend a brand that is exceptional for boneless and skinless sardines? Lately I’ve been eating mackerel and jalapeño slices..they are pretty good if not a little fatty for some.

The calorie count marked on the can includes the oil and sardines. Thus, the type of oil used DOES matter!

For sure! Most nutritional labels on sardines don’t include all the oil in it as the serving size will say drained. I figured this out right after the video 😁
