I think this is exactly what makes Floor special. She always goes into the lyrics, and really put her all into acting it out both in body language and the way she sings it. And it's rare to find both a great skilled voice and a great story teller. Her stint on Beste Zangers really made that clear to me.

I think exactly same than you. And what we both think about her, I take Floor´s own words (below). In Nightwish new album, there is one song, what is difficult, even Floor, to sing. So, here is her story from interview just few days ago (published 27.1.) This tell much about her, and her working. And also that Tuomas is not really writing pop songs :D , but more complicated songs! Waiting that new album so much !!! Until now, I have read about 4 valuation to it, every each of them are really positive and one was really hype!!! Floor " I had to practice, for sure. REALLY practice. And I really do like the result. It was a challenge. It was so complex that it’s not like “I’ve listened to it and yeah, I’ve got it” and then go from there. I really had to study it. I have to study the melody, I have to study where the words come in, and by the time when we got to the point when the first demos came in and we rehearsed together, I could sing it. As in it sounds okay. But I knew what the lyrics were about but I had no chance to put in the emotion yet. Now I could recite it, basically. When the drum recordings started and I was back home I went through everything for few weeks more. It was daily rehearsals of combining what I knew and felt the song was about to reciting the technical element of the singing of the words and the melodies to get them into singing and storytelling and feeling and transmitting the feeling, emotion and the story - if that makes sense. That was definitely THE challenge. Not that I didn’t understand what I was singing, but to combine everything into something that made it sound 1) easy and 2) comfortable and 3) with the right feeling behind it."

@@jukkahelminen9071 Thanks for copy pasting that snippet of the interview. Floor is such a geek when it comes to singing. And I mean that 100% as a compliment. But I had a feeling that she indeed was this thorough in her work with the songs. Because when she's on stage, she seems like she's just enjoying herself. And to get to that point, you really have to put in the work.

Based on some of the interviews I saw with Floor, I am convinced that she sings everything intentionally and works it out in detail, i.e. is well prepared and goes the extra miles to find the interpretation that works best for her and the piece, as well as the sections. She also mentioned that she joined the band for the rehearsals from DAY ONE in order to listen and develop the vocals together with the band, which in the past was apparently different for the other singers, who would join the band once they had the music down.
@ronaldboers8061
@ronaldboers8061 4 жыл бұрын
That actually that was not intended by the band. She was intended to join them much later in the rehearsals when most musical parts were nearly done but she had not seen them for a couple weeks so she thought she would drive by and just say "hi". After listening for a while she started to recognize the songs and said "Get me a mike" and started singing along, much to the surprise of Tuomas she knew all the lyrics already from the top her head. Floor thought it was nothing special to be involved that early in the process but the previous vocalist never did that. So that is how that came about. You just gotta love this woman.

Floor always does a great unique job on whatever she does, completely making it her own. Her version of Slaying The Dreamer is absolutely perfect and beautiful but let's be honest, I never had a problem with understanding what Tarja was saying in this song. Tarja in many songs gets unclear somehow but this song wasn't one of them IMO. Some songs like this one, Wish I Had an Angel and She's My Sin, both Floor and Tarja do a great job, but in different styles but both do it great (unlike some other songs like Romanticide that I can't bare Tarja)

Thanks everyone for your nice comments and interesting takes on the performance! I'm always glad to share opinions with you guys who are being loving and supportive, and also those of who who don't necessarily agree with my opinions! I'm writing this because I want to clarify a couple of things because I'm really tired of the people who come over here to get mad at how I'm not worshiping Floor 100% of the time. I LOVE her, and if it isn't clear at to you by that point, you should check out the 10+ reaction videos I made of her so far, some of which I even teared up in. But, if you can't wrap your head around the fact that there isn't such thing as "perfect" in art, then there's nothing I can do for you. Floor, more than anybody else, knows that art is a process, and there's always something to learn. Understanding that makes the difference between good artists, and the ones who master their craft. If all I said to my students would be that they are doing everything perfectly, I would be giving them a disservice. I care enough to be honest about what I hear when it comes to singing, and I'm trying to paint an accurate picture of both the strengths and weaknesses I hear in performances I listen to. I use my experience, training and education to try to make some content that will help learning how to listen to voices with as objectivity as I can. I'm open to disagreement, but coming down my throat for saying anything other than "this is perfect" needs to stop. I'm not going to start saying things I don't think in my videos just because that's what people want to hear, I care too much for that. If you're unhappy with that, you know what to do, leave me a thumbs down or something, and go watch content from people who cares more about providing you with entertainment than educating you about the actual music, if that's what you prefer. (sorry for the rant but like, I needed it)

And of course - the old songs (you sang them yourselves) - are getting new life in the "hands" of Floor. Floor is a total performer - her voice, body, mind, movements is expressing the song - and that was something that neither Tarja or Anette could do. Floor is the song on stage, and I think that is what you are seeing now. It is also very clear in Dead Boy's Poem, from Buenos Aires 2018 concert - the way she leads the music. She is very very very rare, as you says several times during your different reactions - and more often lately. And your reactions are with weight behind - you know you stuff. I used to think she was really good with After Forever and even with Revamp, but indeed she sounds much less comfortable with Nightwish. Maybe something in her range changed? I’m really curious about this matter. Like, listen to her here kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKqZhIyQotyXbdE (Dreamflight with strings quartet) she sounds AMAZING. But again, I’m not a specialist and would love to hear what someone who understands has to say, putting her past and present side by side.

Floor had a concert tour in the netherlands in Januari 2020 with some AF songs Beste zanger songs and some NW songs and of course the duet with Henk Poort the panthom of the opera. It was a succesful performance. You can find something about it on YT. When floor went to NW tuomas didnt want a second tarja. berend jan van enteren yeah, I love Revamp too (don’t enjoy Northward that much tho). I have heard her perform both Ave Maria (and it does sounds great) but The Phantom of the Opera... well, I’m pretty attached to Sierra Bogges’ interpretation of Christine, so maybe is just personal taste. I find it very hard to believe that she would lose her ability to sing classical just because she uses a more rock style now. She is a professional and she still uses her classical technique with Nightwish, but she sounds a little bit better in the past and that is my question: was she better before? Or has she always been the same and my untrained ears are deceiving me?

Elvann I think in general, it’s very difficult for strictly classical singers to venture into faster pop/rock music. Nothing against Classical singers (one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to was Sarah Brightman. And I love classical of all sorts), but when the singer is three beats behind the band and constantly trying to catch up it’s tough to listen to. Not the singers fault, unless you want to say they should know their limitations maybe? Floor has a very unusual ability to be able to do both styles very well, sometimes switching back and forth from one line to the next.

At the time of the Decades tour she'd only really gotten comfortable properly dropping her larynx and using fully rounded vowels in her mixed voice, as she uses in Kinslayer and (parts of) Gethsemane in that tour. Since then she's clearly been working on it a lot because her recent performances of Phantom on her solo tour clearly show her starting to be able to carry that lower larynx and rounder vowel usage even into the climax at the end of Phantom, which she wasn't yet able to do when she sang it on Beste Zangers. I expect within the next year or two she'll be much more comfortable using a full operatic configuration in her head voice and get a *lot* more resonance out of it than she has historically.

It seems inevitable but isn't it about time to bury the Tarja era? If people really want to listen to those previous albums you are welcome to do that, after all you bought them. Nightwish, out of necessity, first hired Annette and later Floor. The Tarja era is over and done with, part of history. It doesn't help neither the band, Tarja, Annette nor Floor to keep going on and on stoking a fire long after it has been extinguished. Give it a rest, I implore you. Why would would anyone want to bury the Tarja or Annette era? While I get that some people have this innate urge to compare things as if it is some sort of arms race because it is the latest thing it is entirely possible to appreciate each era/singer in their own right -- It reminds me of the typical console fanboi/girl arguments that people made. The lengths they go through to validate their latest purchase is comical (and sad in some instances).

This will never end. And rightfully so. IMO, Floor is the best singer out of the 3 'cause she has the most "weapons" at her disposal to give the best performance. I STILL enjoy going back and listening to the original versions of certain songs. There are still certain songs that Floor doesn't do well like Wish I had an Angel. 3 live albums and she still sounds a bit awkward doing it. But other songs she just made her own. The comparisons will rage on although I am in agreement that they should be put on the back-burner from now on. They just need to make an album fully utilizes Floor's power and people will shut up once and for all.

You're 100% entitled to you opinion, art is subjective and the thing is, we don't HAVE to choose anyways! Also, omg this thread, I've been wanting to make a whole video about that topic but I'm still trying to find a way to articulate it. There is nothing that get me more fired up than that at the moment. I can't say the even the word "opera" or "classical singing" without people responding that I should get over Tarja or something. Talking about Floor's operatic singing is not necessarily a comparison with Tarja. With that said, no singer is perfect, or is the best one on earth. That's the beauty about art: you can always improve. I'm sure Floor takes singing lessons to improve herself still today. Masters of their craft understand the importance of always improving, that's what makes them what they are. ANYWAYS.

On my walk today I was listening to After Forever and on it Floor has a wonderfully bright classical voice. I also have their 2018 Latin America Decades tour live album where Floor broke out her darker, more resonant head voice on a few songs. She also had 'tour flu' so I'm not sure if what we are hearing was her lack of comfort with that tone or the consequences of the bug, but I do understand what you're referring to in her use of that technique. She does use it a bit in the Wacken 2013 show and other shows. I actually don't like that dark soprano head voice and all that heavy vibrato. It's my primary reason for not liking opera. I do like classical music when that technique is not heavily employed. It's also the reason why I only like some of Tarja's Nightwish songs - the ones where she tends to stay in a brighter tone for most of the song and cools it on her use of all that heavy vibrato. I can handle that darker tone only in small doses, otherwise to me it begins to sound like an old aunt warbling Christmas carols after one too many visits to the sherry bottle. Floor has admitted to being a vocal nerd, so there's no doubt in my mind that within the natural range of her voice, she can master any vocal technique. Personally, I'd be quite happy if she didn't bother with this technique. If I wanted to hear that dark head voice with gobs of vibrato, I can always go dig out my copy of "Once".

Thanks for the comment, your thoughts about that were interesting to read! :D I don't think that sounding opera has to mean sounding like Tarja, and I think that it is something people get confused with a lot. I don't think Tarja should be the operatic sound reference in any way, I still love what she does and have a strong emotional attachment to that, but I prefer a lighter, brighter opera voice texture than she actually goes for. I think Floor has a really nice operatic tone in general, and in that aspect, I prefer the aesthetic Floor is going for, but she still sings them with too much tension and her breath support doesn't yet seem to be constant, which causes her to be a bit uneven and to lack precision imo. I think that, coming from a pop/rock-voice background she tends to puts too much pressure on her vocal folds, causing her to sound a bit unstable and uncomfortable. It's especially obvious in staccato parts like at the end, where she needs to do really quick sounds. It also shows in very high sustained parts, but when she's in her medium I think her breath management is a bit better. Anyways, I'm a geek but like, it doesn't mean it's not pretty, and being the hardworking performer and artist that she is I'm pretty sure she's aware of it herself and is working towards it. Art is a process, you're never done with it, and that attitude Floor has about her art is what makes me appreciate her most.

@@ElvannReacts Thanks for the nice reply. I'm aware that Tarja's sound doesn't represent opera, for I know that there are many styles of sounds in that genre. Years ago I sang classical music, so I do have a frame of reference. Regarding Floor's operatic voice, I find that when she stays with her natural, brighter tone, she is quite relaxed and the sound flows. However, I have noticed the straining when she adopts that darker tone. During the Decades tour in Latin America, she sang one song using that darker tone (forget which one) and I noticed the straining. She wasn't comfortable, but she was also battling a bug. When she goes for that darker tone, I noticed how her head tilts a bit forward, the jaw drops a bit and the mouth shape is not as open as things tighten up. It was easily noticeable as that's exactly what I did years ago when I pushed into the upper end of my tenor range without going falsetto. It always ended up sounding strained. I was a natural baritone, but as I had the range, I was frequently shuttled between bass and tenor as the need arose. It gave me an understanding of what it was like to sing at the extremes of comfort. Keep up the good work as you have one of the better reaction channels. I usually seek out yours and Rebecca's for the technical stuff and Heath for the laugh.

Just read an excerpt from "Once Upon a Nightwish" last night and found out that Tarja struggled with some of the songs that Tuomos wrote, admitting that she still couldn't sing (at the time of writing) "Stargazers" properly. It's commonly thought that Tuomos writes songs to fit his singers, but the reality appears to be that he writes what he writes and the singers have to deal with it. During the recording for "Oceanborn" Tarja referred to Toumos as, "a real bastard" because of his lack of sensitivity to her singing needs. They used some tricks to get the vocal tracks in the can. Perhaps what you're hearing in the original Tarja version, is some fudging to get past a section she hadn't mastered.

@@magnuscarlsson9969 It’s exactly like Elvan said: Floor puts so much thought into what she sings. That is indeed her greatest strength. She really interprets the song and puts a great deal of thought in figuring out what she needs to do to tell the story in the best possible way. She puts a little bit of one technique here, and a bigger portion of another technique there, and she works her way through the song, trying to understand the song and figure out how it sounds best. I feel that Tarja didn’t do that, she only came to sing the song and that’s it. She didn’t put that much work in understanding and interpreting it the way Floor does.
