He was Sam Cooke best friend and his eyes were on Sam's wife, After Sam Cooke was killed, Bobby married his wife. He was blasted by the black community and Sam's other friends!

@@bakercarl8518 I didn't know that, I knew that he married the wife and I knew one of the brothers married the daughter and they made music together but didn't find out about Bobby's situation with the daughter until about 2 years ago. He still made some good music. Mary Wells was married to 2 of the Womack brothers and she had children by both, people are only human and they make mistakes and we have to forgive. Thanks for the info.

My favorite of Bobby Womack is “Across 110th Street” (1973), the theme from the movie of the same name. Great tune. I first heard that song during my first watch of the movie. In 2010, Bobby Womack and Mos Def were featuring on the Gorillaz song, “Stylo” from the Plastic Beach album. Fantastic video for “Stylo”, too. 💜

The look on Shawn & Mel's face at around 3:03 when they realize this song ISN'T about loyalty and friendship is priceless...LMBO!!! One thing I’ll give to Bobby: He was VERY transparent about his feelings lyrically. Never has being underhanded, lustful, and covetous sounded so good…LMBO!!! Respect and RIP to the Poet…and he know it!

Pretty sure Bobby wrote this about him and Sam Cooke's wife. Cos Bobby married her just months after Sam Cooke was murdered. And Bobby was Sam Cooke's lead guitar player. I know it really hurt his career, cos everyone was outraged. He and Sams wife eventually divorced. True story.

That’s absolutely correct. Bobby Womack was talking about Sam and Sam’s wife in that song. Matter of fact, Sam was murdered. Bobby did say in his song ‘I hoped that he(Sam) never come home.’ Bobby came to Sam’s funeral with Sam’s wife. He was wearing Sam’s suit and driving Sam’s car. Bobby married Sam’s wife two months after the funeral.

It’s known that the song was about Sam Cooke and him getting with Sam’s widow.. but fun fact, Bobby Womack pulled up on Sam’s older brother, Dale Cooke, so that he could try fixing the situation. He knew Dale wanted to beat his ass, and once he saw Dale, he told him to do what he needed to do.. which led to Dale knocking him out

The story is that he was mentored by Sam Cooke when he turn from singing Gospel to secular music; after Sam Cooke was Murdered, Bobby married is Widow... Bobby says it was to protector from all the family that would be trying to still her inherited money... But the Family was mad and wanted to Kill Him... So his songs and his life were kind of a Mirror to each other... LOL !!!
