Curtis Mayfield was a true genius. This song is from a movie about street life and no one could have been a better choice for the music than Curtis. He only agreed to do the sound track if he could write songs that painted a negative picture of street life. If you really listen to the lyrics its a drug dealer who is trying to get out of the game and feels trapped. One of the lyrics is " Got a woman who I love desperately and I want to give her something better than me". On the same album is Freddy's Dead and Eddie you should know better. Great sound track. Curtis is a true legend who wrote some amazing songs with his group The Impressions and as a solo artist.

I see your shock at the rawness of this. I have known this song for so much of my life, maybe am desensitized to the frankness of the words. The groove and percussion are so amazing! Anyway, a song like "People Get Ready" will show you a completely different side of this great artist. Sadly, Curtis lived out the final years of his life as a parapalegic, after a scaffold collapsed on him during a live gig. Rock in Peace Curtis.

Shawn and Mel, THIS was the 70's and the music was RAW!!! I grew up listening to Curtis Mayfield and he was iconic during this time. In the 70's drugs were plentiful and EVERYBODY was using. And yes, the "Pusherman" was a big hit from the movie Superfly soundtrack. There were many Pimps and Big time drug dealers. It almost seemed like the norm, sad to say. Gotta do some homework before you play the music.

@@geraldjohnson4013 I was speaking "generally". You are correct, I myself didn't use drugs but damn near everyone else I knew was or knew of someone who did. It was a crazy yet wonderful decade. I can so relate. I commented that the mid to later 60s is when the music got more HONEST, RAW, EDGIER, DARKER. Too much was going on: Vietnam, Civil Rights, demonstrations, it was no joke. And throw in recreational drug use also became partnered with the times and the music. It was an "AN EXPERIENCE" as JIMI would say.

The other high airplay songs from this movie soundtrack were Freddie’s Dead & the title track, Superfly. Although I’d seen some other movies from that ‘70’s blaxploitation era, I haven’t really seen the whole Superfly movie. Maybe my dad thought I was too young, though I had seen some others like Black Cesar & Three the Hard Way. You need to understand that Curtis Mayfield is one of the iconic r&b soul artists as musician & lyricist, right along side contemporaries, such as Marvin Gaye who scored the soundtrack to Trouble Man & the late Isaac Hayes, who scored the soundtrack to Shaft, for which he won an Oscar. Curtis’ inspirational classics from his own work/ Move on Up, & People Get Ready, which had a cool remix by the female group, Trinity 5:7.

This music depicted the reality of street life the movie was not made to glorify drug dealing but a man who got caught up in the fast life of women drug dealing and danger. He wanted out. Watch the movie this song was one of the first to give you a raw perspective on a drug dealer and all that follows. Curtis Mayfield was a musical genius if you were shocked at the lyrics then he accomplished his objective.

Curtis is a musical genius. Do not let this one song scare you. Its for the movie. Some of his songs were controversial and the powers that be did not want to play some of his tunes on the radio, or live performances, he had to compromise and change some words or lines when live performing. Earlier in his career he was in a soul group, The Impressions. They had a lot of hit tunes. Later on, he became paralyzed from the neck down, unable to play his guitar or walk because of a stage accident, wind causing heavy equipment to fall, hitting him from behind and off the stage.
