Im pushing 2500 miles on my z650 (first bike as well) picked up almost exactly 3 months ago. Refusing to stop riding during the cold. Up in Michigan, we have been blessed with some 40 degree temps. Just going out for a nighttime ride, but just some thoughts. If you haven't seen Motojitsu, I highly recommend checking out his parking lot drills. At first when you start them you may be hesitant to go through with it. You feel like you are going to drop your bike. But as you progress through them you will find that you are such a better rider. I am almost to the point where I can do figure 8's in 4 parking spaces. I am not consistently there yet though. It took a little bit longer for me to understand counter steering. I was using a lot of lean angle with my hips. You are spot on about riding at night, hitting a racoon or like you did a possum is no joke. I still do it though :). Also good on you for not worrying about the exhaust (I think it sounds great, and so did the kid I passed on the road today that gave me the throttle rev sign). Paying $1000 for an upgraded exhaust on a z650 is rather silly if you ask me. You will also see a ton of people telling you that you need to upgrade to the side mirrors, which aren't as good for visibility and cause more vibration. Just keep taking it slow and work your way up to speeds. After a few months you will be pushing 100 and at that point going 70 mph almost feels like you could just step off the bike and walk lol. The highway is 75 here, so I had to get comfortable going 80 to keep up with traffic. Now going 55 with traffic around me isn't stressful at all. The z650 is a great bike, you will possibly outgrow it. It has great acceleration all the way up to anything you could reasonably see in traffic. I can't help but dream about a zx6r or a gsxr750 these days, but really the power is more than adequate. It is a lot of fun running through 4 gears to hit 90. Also you may feel like the wind you feel going higher speeds is insane, unfortunately that thrill fades away too and I don't even notice it unless I am going faster than I should be. Congratulations on your purchase. Don't sleep on the parking lot drills, to me that is probably more fun than just going fast in a straight line. When you get the control and can put that bike anywhere you want, its very rewarding and a lot safer. Like you said always wear the helmet and gloves, maybe think about a jacket and some protection for your legs too. *edit* Also forgot to add in DanDan The Fireman. He has a great system, and as you start to watch several of his videos you can really see the "open lane pattern" where someone will cut you off, trying to creep into the nice space cushion you have created. Also the "side of the car" pattern. Whenever you can see the side of a car in front of you, its time to pay attention. I don't think its an exaggeration to say that 50% of my rides someone has done something that could put my life in danger. I won't stop riding because of it, but it is something to be aware of. People pull out infront of you all the time, and don't see you coming. Pretend like you are invisible, and everyone is drunk and you can start to stack the odds in your favor.

Got a 2023 z650 as my first bike too, first time rider also. Did the MSF course and it helped me feel way more comfortable on the bike. Slap on an exhaust and a fender Eli. Kit on it!

Great. Practice in the parking lot and nearby area. You will gain confidence. Stay with traffic, Use your turn signals, slow down on the curves. You will be fine.💯

The Exhaust Sound is not Special ..but when You Ride a Z650 there is a Nice Growl comes up From The Airbox Under the Gas Tank (or Petrol Tank in UK)

Nice Bike Bro... I remember my first ride like yesterday. I bought a bike and had never rofe before. 98 Kawa zx-7r... The dealer had to drive it home😂...but i taught myself by going up and down my street. Going 30 felt like a hunnit! And when i got brace enough to go on the freeway, i felt like i was running next to the cars or something. I felt naked or something 😂. I was hitting the 65mph curves at 35😂 wasnt too long before i was jetting around on that bad bot though. Be safe...i found this vid because i was loonking at the z650 myself. I haven't rode in years...and i think i want something light to ride around with. The bike i had was too much... I never even came to driving it to it full potential...went 120 once and thought to myself, this shit crazy! So be safe and enjoy your bike

Glad i saw your video. Thinking about getting this or the Ninja 650 next month. Already been playing scenarios in my head of the first ride home. Its actually playing a factor in where i plan on pu4chasing from as i do not want to take it on the highway for the first ride home. Guess theres nothing to it but to do it.

Try to practice in the area if you can. Get use to the gears. Stay with traffic. Use your turn signals. Take it easy on the turns, new tires will slide. Once you get the hang of it, the highway is no problem. You will gain confidence. U GOT IT💯👌👍

I’m exactly your size: 6’, 190 and was thinking this bike for my first or a Vulcan, SV 650 or Versys 650. But I’m going through the same dilemma: freeways all around me so I need something that can go 65-70 that I don’t look like a bear riding a tricycle.

The size is perfect. I don't feel like it's too small. I don't have the feeling of a clown on a small bike or something. When I ride around, alot of guys with chargers, Camaros, mustangs ,ect always wanna test me and race. And I don't. Lol. The highway is no problem at all. This bike can get on and pass cars easily. Sit on one if you haven't already.
