@Darrenski5 ай бұрын
Vince Clarke just made it more commercially popular. But even DM produced all their best stuff when he left. I'm not saying that was Clarke's fault but I guess it worked out best for both of them. After Clarke DM enlisted Wilder and developed a much deeper darker sound that I doubt they would have done under Clarke who was kinda the boss of the band, for want of a better description. And while Clarke was making the music of 'erasure' (which let's face it, wasn't all that) DM were producing black celebration, music for the masses and violator. I don't think anything erasure did came anywhere close to that. Also moyet had previously been one of fad gadgets backing singers so she probably has an earlier history in synth pop than Clarke. He just had a gift for writing simple, easy to remember catchy songs, which is no bad thing.

Vince Clark is a genius when it comes to electronic music. People were really pissed when they bought a ticket to their early shows, expecting a whole band, and when the curtain rose it was one skinny guy with a computer and the amazing Allison Moyet singing. He single-handedly changed music. And he was also a part of many other bands that started the whole "electronic music" scene, like Depeche Mode and Erasure, as well as numerous side gigs with other musicians.

Great reaction! Yazoo (known simply as "Yaz" in the US) put out two classic LPs and 4-5 classic singles in their brief 18 months together. Alison Moyet was the Adele of the 1980s, and Yazoo was her first foray into the charts. Vince Clarke, on the other hand, had been a founding member of Depeche Mode and wrote their first three hits (you should review Depeche Mode, "Just can't Get Enough" to get a feel for how different they were, early-on), before the end of 1981, he was gone and Depeche Mode shifted their roles around. Meanwhile, Vince called up an old acquaintance better known for looking Punk and singing The Blues, but it was exactly that contrast between the soulful, sultry vocals of Alison Moyet (also known ad "Alf") and the icy and precise Synthpop of Vince Clarke that was their key to success. It's easy to forget that this was a full year BEFORE Eurythmics had *their* first Synthpop duo hit with "Sweet Dreams". Two classic albums and a handful of dancefloor bangers and Alison went on to a solo career with mixed results. Vince Clarke found Andy Bell, a flamboyant singer with a similar style and range to Alison Moyet's, and they have been together for the last 36+ years as Erasure. You reacted to their hit "A Little Respect" before. They had a few dozen major UK hits and even did well in the US, with 3 US Top20 singles and several placements on the US Dance and Alternative charts. Other songs to check out by Yazoo are: "Only You" (1982/US#67, UK#2), their debut single, was a UK hit at the peak of the Synthpop explosion. The following year, an a capella cover (by The Flying Pickets) made it to UK#1 on Xmas 1983. It is a ballad and a perfect Pop song. It almost sounds like it was designed by the gods, it's so simple, seamless, timeless, and perfect. The minute you hear it, you'll feel like you've known it your whole life. But it wasn't a US hit when it came out, and because it's not a Dance number, it's not been kept alive by 80s nights or anything over here. "Situation" (1982/US#73, US#1/4wks dance chart) While "Only You" underperformed in the US market, the François Kervorkian 12" remix of the US B-side became a Dance smash that still packs floors at any style club, almost 40 years strong. If you thought "Don't Go" had big "Blue Monday" vibes, check out this banger. There's not a video for it (since it wasn't intended as a hit), but I want to make sure you hear the correct version, which was later added to the US release of their debut LP, Upstairs at Eric's (much like the 12" only "Blue Monday" was tacked onto the end if US versions of New Order's Power, Corruption, & Lies LP). Here's a link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIKxp5qCjbt3es0&ab_channel=YazBaltac%C4%B1gil-Topic "Nobody's Diary" (1983/US#1 dance chart, UK#3), Their third UK Top3 hit and their third US Dance #1 was also their last single. The original video sees them really starting to explore and exploit their image. Vince is as straight-faced as ever (it's the Synthpop code, apparently, LOL) but the video shows their potential for bigger things. Alas, it wasn't meant to be. But this is such a perfectly composed and sung piece of songcraft that it was a fine note to close on, along with their second and final LP, 1983's You and Me Both. "Winter Kills" (1982/did not chart) While this was never a single, it is one of their absolute best. It's basically just Alison on piano and vocals with Vince and E.C. Radcliffe adding some percussion and FX. It's a stirring Blues vocal and one of Alison Moyet's finest moments. I think you'll be impressed with her vocals on this one.

Those vocals give me the chills. The beat and the synths make me stomp my feet 😀

Yazoo only recorded two albums, a very short lived duo. The lady, Alison Moyet, came from a punk outfit called the Screaming Abdabs, and went on to have a great solo career. Vince Clarke, the guy, came from Depeche Mode to Yazoo. After the two albums he did a few things (with Paul Quinn, and as part of The Assembly. Check out Never Never from them) before settling in as half of the synthpop phenomenon that is Erasure. In 2010, Yazoo reformed briefly for a live tour, and a "best of" compilation.

Man this used to pack the dance floor! We'd hear that opening synth line and the place would erupt.

Whilst we’re all talking about Vince Clarke here, Its about time you did some more Erasure reactions., You seemed impressed when you did A Little Respect a few months back.

Saw Alison Moyet live just a few year's ago. Easily one of the best concerts I ever saw. Amazing songwriter, lyricist, vocalist. Rare contralto in modern music. Her post 2000s albums have gone back to these electronica roots but with a much more polished current dark energy.

I was born in 83, so was only like 2 or 3 when I heard this for the 1st time. My oldest sister who graduated high school in 85 use to take me with her to Cleveland State when she was taking music classes there in 86. She had this album on tape and use to blast it in her car. God was a beat up car that was. I use to go over her house and we'd put that tape in the stereo and jam. I was moving in the mid 2000s, and she had the CD that I bought her for Christmas. We blasted it while suck in traffic on the freeway and people were staring at us laughing. So we just laughed and waved. Such good times! I'm so glad to have grown up in the 80s and 90s!

Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet broke up too soon. I would have loved to have heard many more tracks from them. Both of them are so underrated in my humble opinion. 80’s synth pop at its very best.

This has a special memory for me in that it's when me & a friend used to go to a local arcade way back when games were in their infancy. They always played this. Every time I hear this I recall the fun times we had!

Go girl go. Have loved Yazoo from way back. Jay you should try Situation (12"Us mix). Guy on keyboards is Vince Clark, formally of Depeche Mode and now of Erasure. Fantastic party song.😁👍❤️🎶

many have already commented here about vince clarke - to be clear, he created yaz(oo), depeche mode, and erasure. vince is a principal player in the new wave sound from the 80s. Alison has one of the best voices ever, and it was vince who thought how great her voice with his synth sound would be. if you like alison's vocals, you will probably like annie lennox as well.

Vince Clarke is deadpan serious here, but he hammed it up in the official music video, playing a mad scientist .
