The Yardbirds went through a string of now famous guitarists: Eric Clapton (in the studio version of this song a harpsichord played the chord progression. To play it live, this was transposed for a 12 string guitar. Clapton left the group over this issue - you can see Beck playing a 12 string here.) was replaced by Jeff Beck, who later was replaced by Jimmy Page. Jeff Beck has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Once for his Yardbirds work and once as a solo artist. I'm sending a link to a Jeff Beck live performance of his song - FREEWAY JAM kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5exXnSGgLBnqsk Thanks, Adogg - By the way Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) both showed up here to hear Jeff play.

Wasn't Clapton the lead guitarist on the recording of this?

The Yardbirds were pioneering giants. Much that followed are footnotes to their seminal works. They are some classy gentlemen who are probably friends of the Queen. Jeff Beck was guitar during this iteration, but Clapton and Page also held that job. The other players are excellent as well, and get not nearly enough love. All of their hits are essential listening, and would make for great shares. You'll dig it.

The Yardbirds were a very important foundation British rock band. They are most known for having three of the greatest lead guitarists (not all at once) - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. However, respect is due to their lead vocalist Keith Relf. Not only was he a great singer, but he was also a very soulful harmonica player. Especially amazing due to the fact that Keith suffered greatly with severe asthma. although he said it never bothered him while he was performing. Afterwards, he would sometimes be brought to his knees, unable to breath until he used the inhaler he always carried with him. They had many hits, but my favorites are: I'm a Man, 'Heart Full of Soul, Over under Sideways Down and the others recommended in the comments. The group Humble Pie did a wonderful cover of this song slowed down 1/2 time and sung very soulfully by Steve Marriott, however, I doubt that is where you heard it since you aren't too familiar with the Pie.

The song that pissed off Clapton who left and eventually joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (listen to the Beano lp). For Yardbirds era Clapton, try their cover of Jimmy Reed's I Ain't Got You.

You’re on a roll tonight the Yardbirds are fantastic! Part of the British invasion as it was called. A lot of the songs back in those days were only 2 to 3 minutes long unfortunately. You can tell the audience likes them. Lol

What's up, Adogg? You very possibly may have even heard The Yardbirds "For Your Love" as an "Oldie hit" played on some Top 40 hits radio station! It got plenty of air play when it came out. This version is a live performance, perhaps from a TV show. That's Jeff Beck shown playing the acoustic 12-string guitar. He was the famous guitarist who died recently of bacterial meningitis.

Yeah, we all wish a lot of those 60s songs were longer. Back in the 60s, songs couldn't be longer than about 3 min or the radio stations wouldn't play them. So, to be heard on the radio, lots of songs that should have been longer were made short like this one.

Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck &Jimmy Page all three came through this band . Lead singer/ Harmonica. Started a band called Renaissance. A foundation of what we know as progressive rock. Though a short career, The Yardbirds style was very influential. Check out Over Under Sideways Down , Take a While Think About it. Still I'm Sad. Drink that Muddy Water,Train Kept A Rollin. There are so many.

You may want to consider reacting to studio versions of songs first (especially for really old music). Sometimes live performances are that great for various reasons.

Regarding the audience reaction--this was teenage girls screaming. If you want to hear a real rip-roaring audience reaction, watch a video of the Beatles performing live (e. g. their first appearance on th Ed Sullivan Show in 1964). They called it Beatlemania.

Eric Clapton was the first guitarist, but the group didn't want to do straight blues, so he left, and suggested Jeff Beck replace him, and Jeff was the guitarist for almost all their hits. Then the bass player left around 1966, and Jimmy Page played the bass for a while, then they had two guitarists, and eventually Jimmy was the sole guitar after Jeff was fired. After Jimmy formed Led Zeppelin, the Yardbirds had a contract for a few more shows, and Led Zeppelin played as the New Yardbirds for those shows.
