Remember I'm A Man was an Old Blues Song, originally done by Bo Diddley. Shapes Of Things was a Song that Rod Stewart was in when he was in The Jeff Beck Group. In 1965 The Fellows did A Satellite Performance on Dick Clark's Where The Action Is. It was around 1:00 PM in Los Angeles and 6:00 PM in England. The US Kids were blown away by The Fashions that the UK Kids wore.

So Chod, this song is history in that the riff played by Jeff Beck is influenced by an Indian sitar. Eastern folk finding a way into Western rock. The Beatles followed later. The fuzz box Beck used was a prototype borrowed from Jimmy Page. A first of effects pedals and a beginning to the industry.

YES - THANK YOU CHOD for dipping into so called "British Invasion " bands, although not all (ie: Small Faces) ever invaded the US. These bands Beatles, Stones, Who ,Yardbirds, Animals, Kinks, Spenser Davis Group and of course my personal favorite the Small Faces were incredibly important to the formation of future rock. There are certain times in history when culture just explodes - the Italian Renaissance in the 1400's, America in the 1920's and London in the 1960"s. The amount of change, and how quickly things kept changing during this decade is mind boggling. These kids were born during and after WWII , and had to live with deprivations we in US can't imagine. They had no social media, TV, or even much radio. All they had were records, mostly from the US, and look what they created. Some may think this music is dated and not relevant, but the Yardbirds are a perfect example as from them sprang several future rock superstars. Same with the Animals (Eric Burdon), Spencer Davis (Steve Winwood) and Small Faces (Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, and later, Peter Frampton, and Rod Stewart). You said sometime back that it was amazing how many great vocalists England produced, and you are correct. Keith Relf was a very soulful singer who came to a tragic, early end as did Steve Marriott, who was acknowledged by his peers (Robert Plant, Roger Daltry, David Bowie, Mick Jagger & Keith Richards and many others) to be the GREATEST blue eyed soul singer England ever produced. Sorry to be so long winded, but as a student of rock history, I get very excited when others show interest in my favorite time period.

I think something you are missing bigger picture is how the British Invasion in 1964 opened up America to all these blues influenced bands no body ever heard of. The BEATLES arrival in Feb 1964 opened up and led the way for bands like The Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Animals, Zombies Dave Clark Five etc. You would notice how talented all of these bands were and how the sound of Rock music changed drastically starting in 1964. Like the Byrds video you listened to yesterday. They were featuring a 12 string Rickenbacker sound because The Beatles first used a 12 string Rick on alot of the songs in the movie and soundtrack of A Hard Days Night released July 1964. If you followed sixties music. You will see how progressive The BEATLES were. Because every new innovation they implemented every other band followed and attempted to improve upon.

Honestly, Chod, One of the best ways to track how rock music evolved over the sixties, is to pick up The Beatles when they first broke in 1963 or so (same time as The Byrds etc) and to follow the evolution of their music until they disbanded in 1970. The big break was around 1967, with the release of St.Pepper....Jimi Hendrix breaking through, The Doors. The way music changed from 1964 or so to 1969 was astounding.

Hopefully other comments have been made about this song's composer, Graham Gouldman... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Gouldman He composed another big hit for the Yardbirds, FOR YOUR LOVE, as well as The Hollies (BUS STOP) and Herman's Hermits (NO MILK TODAY), all pretty catchy tunes and fairly big hits. In the '70s, he joined 10CC and wrote I'M NOT IN LOVE. These songs are KZbin videos of Graham playing them in various live shows, as well as their original record-label formats.

Totally agree the Yardbirds being a real important foundation for music to come. This song and "For your love" for songs that on the face of it sound simple can so hit that spot. Still remember the sad news 45 years ago regarding singer Keith Relf wondering where his music would have lead to.

Here's a cool fact for everyone who doesn't know, Heart Full Of Soul was originally done as a sitar version by a couple of Indian guys one on sitar and the other on a tablet and when they laid it down for the group if they weren't getting it right because the chord changes are in a 4-4 cord change and the sitar player just could not get it right, so then next thing you know they had Jeff back come up with something on the spot that would sound very close to that so he did the 44 core change on his guitar and added some rock and roll to it and next thing you know that became the iconic rift for Heart full Of Soul. One thing I forgot to mention in the original recording there was one guy on sitar and another guy on Tabla, so when the sitar player cannot get it right they had him leave but they kept the Tabla player and kept his part on the track.

The opening lead was conceived to be played on a Sitar (Eastern Instrument) for some reason it was a not happening but Jeff Beck said no problem I can play that and so much more he has threw all these many years .... Yardbirds are often considered on of the most influential bands well at least when it came to guitar... Hard to argue with Clapton, Beck and Page ...... Check out Beck's Bolero ... epic

This group is a great example of why the chronology needs to be considered. Music was changing so fast that in one year, groups would appear and disappear. NOT because they were bad, but because the members went on to other things. As people have commented, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page all served their time in The Yardbirds. Groups that followed stood on the shoulders of the groundbreakers like this band.

Great song. I think what's interesting about that harmony you are speaking of is that one guy is singing an ascending line while the other is singing a descending line. i love that (cream does that on 'dance the night away'). as people have pointed out, the yardbirds have become known as the taking off point for some of the most renowned rock guitarists of all time (clapton, beck, page)..on this one, Beck tried to emulate a sitar with his guitar lines. pretty innovative stuff for the time...

I think you should try "Crown of Creation" by Jefferson Airplane. These 60s bands were just learning how to use electric guitars and amps. They were recording in bad studios with mono, two and four track tape machines. They often laid complete albums in one or two days. Tough to get great sound under those conditions.

As radio stations grew in number, stations wanted distinguishing entertainment. This really started within 10 years of Radio (starts about 1920 and stations 'go national' - er, try to - by 1925. Post WWII brought much cheaper transmitters (and receivers - er, radios) plus thousands and thousands of WWII vets 'trained' in radio technology. In fixin' them to run. This is why The Big Band Sound faded out - it was soooo time-consuming to arrange and record 20-30-40 piece bands and, by 1950, Big Band stations - with 20-30 hits in a year - were being challenged by small-combo stations with their hundreds of hit-making bands. Combos. Rock-n-Roll. Memphis, Chicago. Motown. Nashville. No longer just LA and NYC. But, that evolution continued, and I think the Beatles weren't really a 'game-changer'. They were just one of the first to hop up on that wave and surf out in the lead - after all, the Beach Boys were making hits in 1959. Hundreds of others were, too. And after the Beatles 'ruled' 1963-1965 in radio hits and record sales ("40% of all records sold in 1964-1965 were Beatles records"), every other combo and manager and record label were screaming, "See? THEY ARE DOING IT! WE CAN, TOO!" Heck... in 1963, Ringo is giving interviews and saying he hopes he can make enough money to open a hair salon. A beauty shop. Yep. He was thinking of the 2-3-4 year success rate that groups had. He was mappin' out his future! "See, guys - if THEY can do it, we can, too." And 1966 and 1967, EVERYONE discovered The Acceleerator - STOMP THAT PEDAL. FULL SPEED AHEAD.

Jimmy Page would later join Led Zeppelin while Eric Clapton would join other groups like Blind Faith, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Derek & The Dominoes before going Solo as well as Traffic with Steve Winwood. He wanted to form a group with Brian Jones after he got fired from the Rolling Stones in 1969 but he drowned. Jeff Beck would later form The Jeff Beck Group that featured Rod Stewart & Ron Wood who would later join The Small Faces then Faces. Also just to let you know that alot of UK Groups were heavily influenced by Blues Music.

The Yardbirds influenced the trajectory of rock more than almost any other band. They are credited with the first psychedelic song, The Shape of Things Before My Eyes in 1965. This kicked off the psychedelic era which peaked in about 1967. From a historical perspective you should listen to this song. Jeff Beck was the guitar player on most of their hits. His guitar style is described as middle eastern. Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page also were guitar players in this band. For Your Love and Over Under Sideways Down are two other songs you should give a listen.

The Yardbirds were unique, in the sense that they experimented with different types of musical arrangements, yet still remained commercially viable as a Rock group. If you look at their TV performances during that time period, they had a relatively "Progressive Rock" sound, without sounding too inaccessible to the listening audience. The Yardbirds were a big box-office draw on tour during the time they were together. You definitely want to react to The Yardbirds' 1968 French TV performance of "Dazed And Confused", which was remade by Led Zeppelin with completely different lyrics one year later. The Yardbirds broke up shortly after that TV performance, so they never recorded the song in the recording studio.

According to Jeff Beck, Page actually passed on the offer since he was making better money as a studio musician back then. Page was the one who referred his friend Beck to the band. Another fun fact, as a thank you to Page, Beck gifted his Blonde Telecaster to Page which later became the Dragon tele.

Actually, Page first joined to cover Bass when the bass player quit in a huff. He REALLY wanted to get into the Yardbirds by then because he was dead sick of studio work. and was willing to take any route to do so. He and Beck were childhood friends. Still are. He took over lead guitar when Beck up and quit mid-tour due to stress. That was Jimmy’s big break.

The Yardbirds' "Shapes Of Things" from 1966 is a true scorcher, likely the band's most raucous recording. The Yardbirds and other bands of that time were rock's "foundation" -- unfortunately, the house built upon it was garbage.

This song demonstrated what a Rickenbacher 12 string is supposed to sound like. Many of the lyrics came from the Bible, book of Ecclesiastes. I unsubscribed to other channels because of the constant interruptions. So glad you don’t do that and keep up the good work. For some great 60s vocals check out the Vogues, You are my Special Angel, or Turn around look at Me. Maybe Barbara Lewis, Baby I’m Yours or Hello Stranger.
