Stayed at a hotel that was also hosting a gypsy wedding in the US. Evidently there was a fight about the dowry or something. We were up three times during the night due to fire alarms, pulled by the kids on each floor as they ran around. The next day we looked out and saw everything from around the pool, from plants to tables, chairs, and umbrellas in the pool. When we checked out we were told they caused $50,000 in damage to the ballroom alone. They were nowhere in sight when we checked out.

Agreed. A friend of mine was a venue manager and the bar license holder - they accidentally booked a traveller wedding, and while the locals, whom she knew and saw regularly, were fine, the blow-ins from out of town were not. Doors were pulled off the place, mirrors and basins smashed in the toilets and she ended up being punched in the face by an out-of-towner when she wouldn't serve him because he was already so drunk. It was an insurance nightmare - cost loads to repair the damage - and it ruined the good relationship they'd had with the local travellers. As always, it's the minority who create trouble that ruin it for the whole community.

@@arose4u2 they don’t have “traditional” sites the way it’s being presented. Just like anyone else who’s traveling in a trailer, they stay where it’s convenient and safe. It makes no sense to leave large swathes of land undeveloped so travelers can overnight there twice a year. There are ways to make a traditional wagon trips with horses that doesn’t damage property, like renting space at local stables or farms. Traditional travel is more possible, cheaper and more accessible than this show portrays it. What’s more is that ppl who go reflexively rancid at the words “racism, tradition squash, etc…” are taking a narrow view. The English were developing that land for centuries before the Romany or Irish Travelers started roaming it. Who’s tradition and culture should take precedence? Aside from not paying tax yet reaping the rewards, they also steal a lot and often don't pay vendors what they're owed and resort to violence very quickly. Our town learnt this the hard way. I'm sorry to say I would not willingly do business with travellers. Small businesses cannot afford to be ripped off like that. I don't blame venues for cancelling on them, one of our local motels and venue even had human feaces and dirty nappies, windows pulled, seats broken, smashed sinks, beds broken and so much filth and rubbish left behind eveb fir a small stay - its actually unbelievable. Cost of repairs was astronomical and an insurance nightmare. Also so much shoplifting in the surrounding shops and terrorising locals. A few did receive criminal charges and fines but how can it be enforced if they don't have a fixed or forwarding address? It's a sad cycle really, lack of schooling and diversity of who they hang out and not having an understanding how normal society works just propels this behaviour that they must think it's normal behaviour. If there is a reputation about Gypsy's then it is up to THEM to change the rep. Gypsy's would NEVER treat their property (Caravans) they way to treat a hotel room. THAT is the reason hotels, venues, pubs do not want to cater to them. Its going to take some time, but its up tho the Gypsy's to change other peoples minds by good deeds, actions. Maybe some community "exchange" festival or something????

Watching this whole video, and living in America & not familiar with the prejudice towards this group of people, totally my opinion, but I do think that they should put a higher value to education, and a higher value of the girls even more so. The guys seemed rather immature. As for the Apple Fair, my question is who cleans up all the poop from the horses. I can see that if your carts are leaving ruts in the ground making it difficult to tend the lawn later, and poop is left everywhere, I would not want you parking on my private property either. Also I question the cleanup left for the government and the town as well. In the video, there were a lot of people there and I mostly saw the police standing around and quietly leading the procession to the police station for them. Just watching I feel like it was just a show by the travelers for the TV. I noticed how much through the video that they do not like to follow the rules and seem obstinate and doing things their own way which I could see would make people weary to want to work with them or frustrated if there's a large group of them.
