I live in South Africa and both my wife and I have Omicron at the moment. We were both vaccinated (Pfizer). I had one "rough" night and was a little tired the next day. Had a slight headache the first day and still have a sore throat on day three. I work from home and are still able to do a full day's work. My wife don't have a sore throat but is very tired for 5 days now. We live on a farm and have limited contact with other people. She picked up the virus at a Post Office where she renewed her vehicle license. She wore her mask all the time and sanitised when she arrived back at her car. She started showing symptoms about 36 hours later. It is similar to having a cold but with only a slightly blocked nose and a resulting post nasal drip. Neither of us have a cough but I can feel a slight tightness in the chest. I will post updates here in the next couple of days.

I'm from Pretoria (Tshwane) South Africa. My two disabled adult children caught what I suspect is Omicron from their caregiver. My son, who showed symptoms first, had a severe headache, very light-sensitive eyes, the first day he had a slight fever. He tested positive a day later. Then he developed a slight cough and a scratchy throat. All of us have been fully faccinated. My daughter tested negative but I suspect that she just had a low viral load, since she had symptoms too, severe fatigue, nausea and a slight headache, which only lasted a day. My son was back to his old self within two days. Both have co-morbidities. I myself have no symptoms as yet.

Having earned a PhD, he surely is called Dr. My logic is that in the academic landscape, he earns the highest degree in the field he specializes in, so he deserves the title as Dr. Base on the manners that Dr. Campbell presents to public concisely the info on key data sources around the world (believe to be massive in volume in terms of perspectives and numbers available), without a PhD background, he can’t do it in such clear and concise manners, and share his point of view in such data-driven rational angle. @@seantheplayer8047 don’t know about “many people” seeing him as a clinical doctor, but I definitely take Dr. Campbell’s words and comments from the perspective of an experienced healthcare professional (not restricted to clinical doctors - my personal opinion). I have a PhD myself as well, not in medical field but another discipline. I would only use the Dr. prefix in the corresponding contexts which my perceptions & expertise are highly relevant and can possibly make a difference to justify concerns. As for Dr. Campbell (during the pandemic times, public facing lots of doubts/ uncertainties about vaccines, COVID-19), his prefix and manners in looking at data & info really help. The use of Dr. prefix in his case during this period of time means a lot to the public that should be listening to facts & data about the pandemic, rather than driven by emotions and fear.

@@brianmi40 I've read quite a few of the more recent books as a friend of mine bounced most of his books to me when he was becoming a surgeon (helping him, and talking through his experiences as learning). And I gotta say, medical science is astounding. I don't expect anything unrealistic from John here. I expect a good summary with a frank perspective. I've read 250 pages so far and it is pretty economical and straight forward. It is "notes" as it says, in that its an overview of everything. So as I'm reading I know what is being talked about, but I appreciate the way it is put across never the less. It isn't always about breaking new ground, some times its about accessibility, approach, and so on. It's good so far :)

@@RabJ973 1. Not much. The only semi-long term data I am aware of are of the platform vaccines or treatments (mRNA) for other conditions (e.g. rabies vaccine, cancer). At times it includes a bit longer follow up (1-2 years for example). The profile of side effects is however different depending on casing of mRNA, so that at least translates to short to medium term effects. Maybe some other smart people here will tell me better. 2. NONE, because you cannot derive from VAERS or Yellow Card data alone any conclusions regarding safety or lack of thereof of the vaccine. They are only useful to generate potential hypotheses that can be then empirically checked against background rate of adverse events - and might be usefully compared to the rate of serious adverse events after other vaccines. Do I get two stars? Do I get two stars? ;) You never mentioned one has to answer correctly. There is a certain satisfaction in answering rhetorical questions though. :)

Hello from South Africa. Got diagnosed with Omicron yesterday. Symptoms started on Saturday night with scratchy throat and coughing. Progressed into fever, body aches and sensitive eyes. Have had flues in the past far worse than this. Comorbidities include stage 4 prostate cancer. Also am not vaccinated. @kblast2000 I think the main reason is we don't yet have the science in depth enough to know it is less virulent yet, although encouragingly, as Dr John keeps telling us, the early signs are good. The other reason may be because Delta is still circulating in populations and allowing viruses to spread also allows them more chance to mutate and develop a NEW variant which could potentially introduce more dangerous changes again (as we had to discover with Delta) ~ I think regardless, it is prudent of us to expect the virus will continue circulating but I still think it is better to try to slow the spread, especially to protect people who are immunocompromised and our younger kids who can't get vaccinated yet, just in case they get sicker than average or end up with long covid symptoms after infection :,( plus, even the common cold or flu are annoyjng to get, and the muscle pain/headaches from omicron don't sound fun. We do well to remember we vaccinate not just to protect ourselves but to protect those in our populations who are most vulnerable because none of us would like to be the cause of their discomfort, death, or the further excess strain on the hospital system (and our hero nurses and doctors who have already suffered so long during these crazy covid times). And is way cheaper so the choice should be simple. And on top of that it seems like Omicron will give everyone mild symptoms and great immunity. As we all know natural immunity is far greater than any vaccine could give you. So why would anyone at this point, who is below age of 70 and doesnt have some severe illnesses, take this vaccine ?

4250 in hospital in SA with omicron, that is the type of thing that news and media would tell everyone to scare them. They would of course leave off the fact that 70% of those cases were found incidentally due to people going to hospital for other reasons. He has been "teaching" on YT since 2007 (14 yrs), and I had found him several yrs ago when I began taking Metformin and was researching Pre-diabetes, weight loss, osteoporosis, etc and his channel came up. He was teaching it all in a very easy way to understand and without any ego involved. The "common cold" is a catch can for upper respiratory viral infections that are not influenza. There are estimated to be about 300 distinct viruses from many viral families that fall into this catagory. Maybe half of those have been sequenced. 4 of the known "common cold" viruses are endemic Coronaviruses.

My 80yo aunt is in hospital since Sunday with covid, new variant most likely. The family sent her to hospital for precautionary reasons. So far she hasn't been on oxygen except for a brief spell on Sunday. She has Parkinsons and high BP. So far mild symptoms. So hoping it stays that way.

I like most of what Campbell has to say and his approach to breaking down information for the general public. However, when he said the information on the pharmaceutical sites must be accurate, as they would not lie on their own website, I found that an extraordinary claim. A for profit entity that says "buy more of our product for greater gain", is as old as the hills. If there is a profit motive involved, I think we should all have a healthy dose of skepticism. It does not have to be a direct lie, but neither could it be without bias, to push more product to gain greater profit.

Practically, most people want to know how much better off they are with a vaccine than without, and this data suggests around 20x less likely to catch COVID. If you had an activity that had a 1 in 100 chance of death every time you did it, and you completely removed that chance so that it was 100% safe, you could say that the numerical risk reduction was only 1% - so why bother? This shows it’s not really a useful metric; you already have one in the ratio of COVID cases between the two groups - that is directly applicable to real life.

In the Netherlands there is only focus on vaccination. Not any attention on vitamines and ventilating. The health care system and hospitals are understaffed for the last 10 years. The healthcare capacity been already a problem before covid19!

Saying you're less likely to be hospitalized if vaxxed doesn't factor in the criminal withholding of early treatments, especially when the hospital knows you're unvaxxed. NONE of this conversation addresses long-term effects of the vaxx, and that risk factor needs to be a part of every conversation. Without that, short-term hospitalization rates are stripped of their true meaning.

As GP in the front line of Omicron in South Africa,this is exactly what we see. The purpose of the virus is to spread and survive. Virulence af significantly decreased. For the virus this is a win win situation. For humans this is also now a win win situation. Currently no patients with only Covid-19 symptoms admitted to our local hospital. Confirmed on morning of 8 December. I have one patient with chronic obstructive airway disease on 2 liters of oxygen nasal catheter. Co- incidently discovered Omicron positive. Reason for admission anemic due to prostate metastatic cancer. Purpose for blood transfusion. I see 10 cases at surgery daily. 90 % positive. Definitely younger population. I had Covid-19 in January 2021 and also J&J jab. Monitoring my antibodies on a regular basis.

Not sure if that's the most sensible thing since Im 53 but I don't see the point in getting it now with this breaking news... hopefully this is the beginning of the end of this. Mark, I agree with you. The absence of this level of information sharing is indicative of how this sickness has been politicized. Dr John is doing what I would have thought most in the medical profession should have done, however he appears to be the very small minority. Dr John stands out on the global stage. When the dust settles I believe Dr John should receive recognition for services to humanity.
