One of the things that I most enjoyed about the show is Flanagan's take on ghosts and time. Once the person's passed, time is not perceived linearly anymore and the show masterfully depicts this.

Flanagan did an amazing job with the show, but that's not his take on ghosts. It's literally one of the most popular takes on ghosts and even a couple of old "goosebumps" books rely on this plot. To be fair this isn't even the first adaptation of this novel that plays with that take. The 1960s movie gives a similar take with Eleanor's storyline.

@@zimvader25 the original comment wasnt necessarily saying it was an original take that belonged only to flanagan, they were just saying its the viewpoint he has and incorporated into this show.

Every time i watch the show (or even someone reacting), I always cry at the same moments. When Nell sees her husband at the house, during Luke’s eulogy (“I was born 90 seconds before Nell, but she was always my big sister” KILLS me), during Nell’s speech to her siblings, when Hugh tells Steve “I was so lucky to be your dad,” and when Clara dies and Mr. Dudley sees her with their daughters. This show was so spectacular. I wish I could watch it for the first time all over again.

It's interesting to ponder whether it was just the house, or Poppy, or perhaps both. I think it was both. There are hints to this. Young Steve mentions the Hills using Ouija boards. Back in the early 1900s wealthy people were fascinated by the paranormal and used to hold seances and would even have a room dedicated to it. Mrs Dudley seems to know about this also and almost connects Steve's mentioning of that to religious faith etc. I think the Red Room is where they would hold their seances and it created the foundation for the haunting to come. If that was taking place while Poppy was a child perhaps that's what caused her insanity (in the same way it affected mom). It makes sense. Poppy dragged the mom in, then the mom took her place to drag her kids in. So what dragged Poppy in? The way they play with time in this show would make a prequel fascinating and leave it open to so many possibilities. Also glad they chose this ending. When Luke is cutting the 2 year anniversary cake at the end it was going to pull back to reveal the oblong window behind him, suggesting that they were all still in the Red Room. The director thought that was too painful to do and changed it. I'm really happy they did that because it would have WRECKED ME. lol

Poppy was never in Hill House as a child. She met William Hill at an asylum and came to Hill House as an adult. We are told that Poppy was mad before she came to Hill House. We know from the police that the body bricked in the wall was William, who had disappeared, but we're don't know if this was before or after Poppy died. We learn in Theo's Red Room vision that William cheated on Poppy and bricked himself in out of guilt and fear, but we don't know if Poppy knew about his cheating. Poppy tells Liv stories about the slow, drawn out deaths of her children, about her life being a nightmare, and then "waking up". Though she only mentions two children, earlier in the series Liv mentions three children, so who knows what happened to the third. I think Poppy was an unstable young woman, who lived a tragic life, and became a malicious, manipulative ghost. Mrs. Dudley implies that she was not exactly a nice person when she was alive either, so it's likely that she just enjoys playing with people's minds and making others as miserable as she was in life.

My biggest oh shit moment was in the Red Room wgen the mum is trying to poison the kids with the tea and the realisation that Abigail was real the whole time and not just Luke's imaginary friend.

Originally, it was planned to let everyone die, but that was too dark. The audience should leave the series with something positive. I am glad that this end was chosen. It would have been too sad. One could have seen the redroom visually in every room. They all shared the same window. Nelly's Dialogue was for me the best of the whole season full of great monologues. That's where the tears came to me. For me, it's the best written series in this genre. This includes all the films I've ever seen. It was a great trip with you to experience the series again and that you could follow and interpret the course so well was great. Not many have shown that. It was a positive ending through and through. Everyone is happy, whether in the house or outside. In the house, no one is aware that they are trapped, because the house fulfills their wishes. You saw it on Nelly. She re-experienced her wedding day there. I think with these thoughts everyone can go out of the series well. The house stands as it has always stood. No spirit is free. The father has given Steven the responsibility and no one will enter it anymore. It was just unprocessed stories that pulled the family back. These are now processed.

I've just read Shirley Jackson's book last week, and it made me admire Mike Flanagan even more. As far as I'm concerned, the series is an original Flanagan story with a handful of nods to the book, but they're so different that you can't call it an adaptation. The book is a completely different story with completely different characters and a completely different house. No Hill family (the house is built by the foot of a hill, hence "Hill House"), no red room (there are a blue, a green, a yellow and a pink rooms, but they're not important to the plot), the characters are not a family, there's no back and forth between childhood and adulthoood (they all meet for the first time as adults in the house)... other than character names and some scenes that are taken from the book (and even then put in a different context), the series is its own story through and through. Kudos to Flanagan for this masterpiece. (that said, the book is really, really good, and if you want to read it you won't be spoiled by the series)

Old Clothes is the most accurate to the original material, I think he did really well with that one. Like you’ll be surprised once you finally read it. My personal favorite (other than Turn of The Screw, of course) that I recommend you should add is “The Altar of the Dead”. I recommend that you read it first because I love hearing peoples’ thoughts on it. I won’t spoil anything, and if you watched Bly already then you get the basic gist of it. It’s mostly about a guy trying to preserve the memory of those (who died) around him, to keep them from becoming forgotten. I think it’s a beautiful concept, and it’s one of the things I think about the most regarding death. Omn1 hasn’t watched yet so I can’t say too much, but I really recommend it. I think that episode was also my favorite one of the show.

The opening and closing lines is something I noticed the second time I watched it, the monologues from Steve's book. The show starts with Steve's book. His opening monologue as someone who is a good writer but doesn't know what he's writing about, just being creative with words. "Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House... and those who walk there... walked alone" And then it ends with Steve's monologue again and now he knows so much more. Same sentence. "Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House... and those who walk there, walk together."

A great reaction to a great show. Mike Flanagan took so many threads from the original book and rewove it into this masterpiece. You should watch the original film adaptation, The Haunting (1963). It is completely different and follows the book quite closely. It is still considered to be one of the best haunted house movies ever made. You will see how many of the references that were taken and reworked into this show. Stay safe and Carry On!!

My read on the house is that the various ghosts are all basically independent actors. Some are relatively benign, some are insane and malicious. The house just wants to feed, but it empowers those ghosts that serve its own ends. And it's definitely a malicious actor in and of itself. The whole time-looped self-haunting of Nell, for example, was the house itself all the way through. It wants to break down the wills and minds of the people there until they die inside its walls. A lot of the stuff at the end, though, wasn't the house directly. It was Poppy and Liv. Poppy is just batshit and enjoys torturing people, and Liv was just desperate to bring all her kids back to the house. Because their independent desires ultimately served the goals of the house, I think it lent them a lot of its own power to act out those desires. It's not that Poppy or Liv are any more powerful than any other ghost, but because what they wanted dovetailed with what the house wanted, the house supercharged their ability to act on those desires.

I honestly feel like the house is definitely haunted but its being controlled by the most predominant force in the house. Like Poppy was crazy and bad and so that is how the house was acting but now the predominant force in the house is love. I could be completely wrong but that’s what I choose to believe.

The show clearly explains that time isn't linear, as we know it. There is no "eternity", just moments.
@Omn1Media
@Omn1Media 3 жыл бұрын
All that meant is that as a spirit they observe time differently but they will always exist for eternity. Linear or non-linear, eternity is absolute...which was the point of them reuniting at the end, to be together forever or till the house starves. The mom even said, she'd be alone for so long, acknowledging the passing of time, and so does Poppy. It's kind of like the black hole in Interstellar.

Thanks for sharing your journey with us! :) While I think that Poppy is definitely one of the prime troublemakers in the House, I do still think the House itself is evil at its heart (it does drive people insane and trap their souls for eternity) - certain characters have just managed to carve out a sweet little family unit within the confines of that awful scenario. So the ending to me is more bittersweet than fully happy, and the show isn't necessarily saying that we were wrong to think the House was cruel or disturbing.
@maddwitch
@maddwitch 2 жыл бұрын
The only insane souls we really know about are Poppy and William, who were both insane before the house got to them, though William grew up in Hill House, so that's a maybe. Hazel wasn't insane and Mr. Dudley's mother, who we see collecting Abigail after she dies, seems sane. The guy crawling in the basement was tortured and burned to death, so I don't know that you can reasonably expect much from his ghost. I think Liv's sensitivity made her vulnerable, and Poppy, as a mother who had lost her children, knew just what buttons to push to tip Liv over the edge. Liv even expressed the wish to keep Luke and Nellie as they were before Poppy started whispering in her ear and showing her visions.

They're not "letting" the house stand. They've no choice. Luke literally tried burning it down and it did nothing. All they can do is "hold the door", like the dad (who was the frigging mvp of this show) said. And now that responsibility had been passed to steve.

I totally agree with your assessment; this show is a 10 out of 10 and Mike Flanagan immediately became one of my favorite directors, even right before Cary Joji Fukunaga, who I loved since the first season True Detective and Maniac. Bly Manor and Midnight Mass, also by Mike Flanagan, are good but not quite as good as Hill House.. By the way there are plenty of reactions to Haunting of Hill House on KZbin but have to say that yours was one of the best. Tbh, I ended up feeling rather betrayed by the ending. For the entire series the house represented terror in all of its faces. It was a source of fear and anxiety and it left so much trauma in its wake. We were reminded at every turn that this house was full of darkness. Then right at the end it's like "Hey, if we die here, we can be together forever! Oh happy day!" It was rather disappointing. I have a theory about what it means, but I don't want to tell you about it since you plan on watching The Haunting of Bly Manor. I think when you watch that series, the ending of this one will make more sense.
