its hinted at that sunny got tired of practicing the violin so much. he hated how he had to miss out on watching cartoons with his friends because he had to practice. its why mari apologizes for "pushing him too much" in that one dream segment. she "just wanted it to be perfect." with mari being a perfectionist, they probably practiced for hours and hours all the time. and him losing his fingers in blackspace could imply he was physically hurting from it too

There's actually a line in Blackspace 2 that reinforces the fingers hurting bit. Can't remember what it said exactly though 😅

I think it's more because he couldn't reach her level of "perfection" and felt frustrated and insecure. Honestly, this is a more valid motivation for his frustration than not being able to watch cartoons with his friends.

Fun Fact 1: To be fair to Aubrey, if you read what she actually does in battle, she never uses the bat. She just kicks, punches, and spits at you. The bat is just for intimidation. Fun Fact 2: What's even better about Dino Dig is that you can potentially find Kel's more ultimate than ultimate weapon, the chicken ball. It's super luck based and you only get one shot at it since the chicken that potentially drops it doesn't respawn, but it ups Kel's speed to ridiculous levels. So his Run n Gun ability, combined with Flex, Happy, and Coffee, is broken as hell. The developer, Omocat, realized this after people exploited it to beat the game, and in the console version of Omori's boss rush, there's an extra fight against your friends who use that exact same strategy. It's TERRIFYING and absolutely hilarious. Fun fact 3: about the Hooligans fight! If you look around Kel's house beforehand and search his mom's purse, you'll find pepper spray. You can use that to beat the Hooligans in one shot. Fun fact 4: In the part of the game with Mari following you, if you run around the beach area long enough, Mari asks that you stop running because of her bad knee. If you keep running, Mari will actually disable your run until she leaves. Fun fact 5: In Medusa's section of Humphrey, if your FUN value is set to max (13), there's a Humphrey that will straight up say "I fucking love air conditioning." No joke, that's actually what he says, but only once. Fun fact 6: If you somehow actually do have a million clams, you still have to do the boss fight. Aubrey won't let you just give them all your money. Fun fact 7: You can't see it in the fight, but the weapon Basil fights with is a pair of shears. The only time you CAN see them is if you choose NOT to go to Basil's room and instead go back to sleep. It's...well...it's a bad ending, let's just say that. (Not so) Fun fact 8: I think the implication, at least according to the descriptions for each picture in the revealing photo album hidden in the game files, is that it was Basil's idea completely to string up Mari's body and frame it like a suicide. Sunny was in complete shock and just did whatever Basil prompted him to do, he was basically a zombie, and Basil just didn't want to lose his best friend. Ironically, and sadly, he lost him anyway. Fun fact 9: You don't need to lose three times to Omori, you just need to survive long enough to get past a certain part of his dialogue. Once you inevitably lose after that, that's when it progresses. You can also choose NOT to continue to fight against Omori, leading to another bad ending. Speaking of Bad Endings, you should definitely play the Hikkomori route if you haven't already. Love the video man.

interestingly the only way to beat the hooligans w/o pepper spray is to specifically have a large Stock of Band-aids(around 40-50) and around 20-24 first aid kits, Sunny's required to have the seashell charm equipped. the hooligans also have dialogue throughout the fight as their hp gets lower (which's actually rare for people to see cuz pepper spray) and the worst part about it is when they get their ult, its all a 4 hit rng attack where if all 4 hits land on Sunny or kel, thats an automatic reset hooligans is surprisingly one of the actual hardest bosses in the game, but at least you get to keep the pepper spray for the recyclepath Basil's boss rush in the console version also has really interesting implications, which comes after the friends fight. it's prob one of my fave aspects of the game, yet its also pretty sad/morbid once you realize the implications at the end of that version

I think its worth noting that Aubrey is the only one with neglectful parents, even a possible hoarding situation to deal with. Everyone else has family/caregivers to rely on but she literally had no one looking out for her after they split. She attempts to reach out to Basil but finds the vandalised photos and feels betrayed. Makes sense why she might not feel inclined to try reaching out again. Also yeah, she never actually uses the bat in her boss fight. Its just for show.

About the coverup, I strongly believe that Sunny's parents knew the truth. What makes me thing of this is that shadowy figure from one of the keyholes that is clearly sunny's father says "I have no son" as he is cutting down the tree, and the shadowy figure of the mother when uncovering the truth says "I can't lose another child...". Mari fell downstairs, she should have clearly visible bruises from it, not to mention that her head was bleeding as the music sheets were covered in her blood, so they probably knew it wasn't a suicide and Sunny was involved, but since he closed up they didn't knew exactly what did happen. As for the friends reaction to the truth, I feel that all of them ended up forgiving Sunny since it is the message of the game overall, forgiveness. Aubrey was close to unintentionally kill Basil in the lake, so she is aware of the situation. Kel was supportive of everyone since the very beginning, so he would easily forgive Sunny and Basil. Hero probably would feel certain relief knowing that Mari didn't took her life herself because he didn't saw the signals and failed to be there for her, although I feel he would still be mad at Basil specifically for covering up a death in such a macabre way. Speaking of Basil, I find extremally morbid how a 12 years old though of covering an accident as a suicide. Basil is really messed up in the head, or had a really traumatic past of his own that is never explained.
@NunyaBizniz-om6xf
@NunyaBizniz-om6xf Күн бұрын
I can't genuinely believe anyone other than Kel even has the *potential* to forgive Sunny or Basil. Hero may feel a sense of relief in knowing it wasnt Mari's choice.. but he would not just forgive someone he cared so much about dying hiw she did. Aubrey has so much grief-turned-anger that when she finds out about this new context, it would trigger her grief again and it would likely result in an immediate and intense anger. I cant imagine she would ever truly forgive Sunny or Basil. Kel likely has the highest chance to forgive. He is a positive force, and I can see him struggling for a while before really letting it set in that it was an accident. That's just how I feel anyhow.

(Spoiler Warning) I was honestly surprised how quickly he went over opening the door for Kell as that wouldn't be an easy choice for most players. Last time you did it was the Mari jumpscare that was shown off, so you'd half expect another terrifying image. This ends up testing players to see whether they have hope that there's more to the world than bad memories, allowing Sunny to develop past their trauma or end up spiraling down said Hikikimori route where nothing ever gets better.

1:01:50 I actually see few people talk about this segment and what it represents when playing the game, so it's not unusual that you felt it came "out of nowhere". I can share my interpretation though, if you are curious! Like previously established, the "Dream World" morrors/reflects the real live world. In the previous segment in the real live world, where hero returns, Sunny is fully faced with the reality that all his friends have grown up. They changed as people, have no hobbies, new friends. Hell, Hero is in college and will soon enter the working world of adults as a DOCTOR! Not a cook, like they all asumed he would become when they where still kids. So when Sunny enters the dream world again as Omori, it reflects those revelations. His friends are suddenly missing, and when he finds them they are all locked into adult jobs, with adults contracts. They don't have time to play anymore, they have to work, and most of them don't even enjoy it. The whimsical ever lasting child like dream world, suddenly threatens the gang with having to grow up and get a job, just like they will soon have to do in the real world.

Few things to mention about the game since I’m obsessed with it (SPIOILER WARNING for those who want to play the game or those who haven’t finished it yet): -There’s photo descriptions for the Truth about Something. I believe they were removed from the game or found in the files or something like that, but look it up, it definitely clarifies some details about the accident. -Speaking of files from the game, in the video folder containing every animated sequence from the game, there’s an extra video called “In memory of a day”. I honestly don’t know what to make of it. - Others probably mentioned it, but by not opening the door on the first day, you can instead do the Hikikomori route, which leads to more Dreamworld content for the trade-off of only ending badly for obvious reasons. Overall, solid video! I loved it! -By giving up on the Omori fight instead of keeping to fight like you’re supposed to, you get yourself another bad ending. Not to spoil it, but there’s a reason why the dream friends take the door on the way up in the good ending… -The Omori fight doesn’t make you lose 3 times to win, it’s all entirely up to skill. The gol of the fight is to kill Omori enough times until you hit a roadblock (the part where he says you loved her and you killed her). I beat the fight without dying right until the end, so I know for a fact it’s possible.

The day Mari died, Sunny threw his violin (which was a gift from Mari) down the stairs out of frustration because he couldn't play the waltz as well as his sister did on the piano which led to the argument between him and Mari. When Mari fell, she fell right on the broken pieces of the violin, that's what killed her.

I did love seeing your full journey through this game, written through the lens of your thought process as you played, like watching you play through the game in real time without having to commit to it. It's a really nice way to do a review of a story-based game like this. On the game side of things, I am a little sad you got so EXP bloated at Dino's Dig, but hey, that's a game mechanic, so fair is fair. A couple things you didn't mention: The Hangman Holes, a somewhat underutilized but still interesting gimmick, the latter half of the correct keys you find leave holes for you to go into to see something, most of the time vague or disturbing. Just more fuel to add to your theory fire. You also only lose during the other route, I'm pretty sure. The Hikkikomori Route, an entire playthrough of the game where you don't open the door for Kel, and you spend the entire game just wasting away in Sunny's declining psyche. Though this does mean you have to play through the game again, so I can understand not being too eager to jumping into that immediately. Regarding Basil's Garden. The flowers dying to where you can't water them means you didn't water those flowers when they were wilting in time. This usually occurs right before you enter Humphrey, but right after Last Resort. Missing them in this short time between dungeons will usually result in them dying. Keeping them alive long enough results in a brief ending scene where Basil wakes up in the hospital, seeing Sunny, with SOMETHING behind Sunny disappearing, and the two boys smiling to each other, most likely to represent the two moving past their guilt at last, and sharing a moment of relief. The Omori Bossfight doesn't require three attempts. Eventually, the "Omori Does Not Succumb" message will change to "Omori Will Not Succumb", indicating you've beaten him enough times. You only have to lose the one time. You also never mentioned the climax of Sunny and Basil's fight resulted in the latter stabbing out the former's eye. A slightly shocking detail in the moment.

Something that I like to think is that the emotion chart at the beginning of the game, where Aubrey represents angry, Kel represents happy, and Hero represents sad, is based on how they dealt with Mari’s death. Aubrey was angry that no one was there for her, Kel covered up his grief with happiness, and Hero was extremely sad and depressed when Mari died.

I played Omori in March and it started me on a journey of emotional growth that I've been going on this entire year. To make a long story short, I was in college when the Covid pandemic hit and it turned my life upside down. I ended up separated from my friends and became depressed. I'd been struggling with this ever since until I played Omori. It taught me I was going through grief for that life that I lost and I finally began to accept what happened and made peace with the impact of the Covid pandemic. I've been doing a lot better lately. One thing i find really neat is how the emotion chart that headspace Hero gives you foreshadows how the friendgroup (-basil) dealt with the grief of Mari's death. Hero became sad and depressed he went from the most responsible and capable of the friend group to being unable to do anything at all. This most likely lead to Kel trying his hardest to stay happy and positive in order to try and take on hero's responsibility and trying to comfort his family. This most likely lead to Aubreys feelings of betrayal at seeing how happy Kel was thus making her Angry and bitter for Mari's death not seemingly being important to Kel And Sunny through it all just shut down, He was unable to feel any emotion except the fear of anything related to Mari. In order to stop himself from even having to face what happened he retreated into a world of fantasy and shut everything real out.

None of Aubrey's attacks actually involve the bat. She punches, kicks, headbutts and spits. She holds the bat as a defense mechanism. To keep people away. Because others being scared of her is how she protects herself. The Church goers make comments about her family. They call her a sinner. They demean her choice of clothes. Her hair. They say they never wanted her in the church. Shes just trying to cope and they have repeatedly judged her. For 4 years. 4 years of no contact from Kel or Hero, her supposed friends. 4 years of never seeing Sunny, someone who she could have greatly used to deal with Mari's death. 4 years of seeing her once best friend, Basil, actively avoid her. We know that Sunny and Basil couldnt help because of what they did but she doesnt know that. She was a little girl, why are we expecting her to be emotionally mature enough to be the one to reach out? These things have serious effects on the life of a kid and how they grow up, it's no wonder she grew resentful when her home life is as awful as it is, too. She has always needed help.

As someone who's experienced a similar type of guilt but due to something entirely different, I'd like to think that their friends forgive Basil and Sunny, they have made a massive mistake, they were aware of that and have tortured themselves for four years with that guilt, i think they deserve their peace. It may take time for their friends to truly forgive them but i think they do. I also think that Mari forgave Sunny, she apologises to him and never acts in any way malicious, so i think she knows that he's suffering enough which is why she wants him to forgive himself. I'm very glad i actually got to watch this, i never got to play the game because the themes in it hit very close to home for me, i even had to stop watching for a few hours to calm down but now knowing the full story, i may pick it up myself at some point. Thank you for playing this masterpiece of a game Ben.

I know this doesn't excuse it ( I also love the video by the way was waiting you to play this game) but tbh i think the reason omocat didnt put in the shift button as a tutoiral thing is because they probably assumed most people who would play the game would know rpg maker and as someone who plays alot of rpg games most people know shift means run/sprint. And as someone who makes rpg maker games, I also know that shift is the button to make the characters run faster. You can also change it tho with plugins, but usually, people keep it to shift

This game came to me at a important time in my life. I was a person who didn't like myself very much from past mistakes. And this game was the one to show that its something to not be ashamed about. It showed me that my life was still worth living. While I wasn't that deep into those thoughts I was on the path to it. This game really did save me and I'll always love it and appreciate it.

Despite not having (thankfully) any experience with the themes occuring in the game, it still made me feel something at least. One of the few games I cried at. Not because of the music, but because of the circumstances. It is also funny how your own self reflects in how you play the game. I wanted to try the Hikikomori playthrough, but it took me a lot of will power to not open the door. 10/10 game

OMORI is a nothing short of a masterpiece, proving that a small team of people (using RPG Maker of all things) can create something dark, whimsical, emotional, beautiful, and impactful. I walked away from my playthrough of this game with a lot of new perspective, and appreciate I that this work exists, if for no other reason than it being brave enough to share a story about difficult but important subject matter in order to shed some light on it. Great work on this video, and congrats on 100K. Wishing for your continued success!

1:41:24 you actually don’t have to keep dying and retrying to progress, you are supposed to not die during the fight until the second phase. The fight moves on to the next phase once you exhaust the dialogue and get to the part where Omori is constantly saying “you should just die” which is a hint that you need to die to enter the “final duet” phase.

1:41:33 so actually, it's not that you have to die a number of times to move on, it's that you have to reach phase 5-6 (with 1 cherish per turn, you hear every friend and Mari talk to Sunny) and die at this point to prompt the good or bad endings choice (Actually, bad ending is triggered at any point if you do not continue after dying)

My guess about the meaning of the employment thing is the way they were effected by grief from Sunny’s perspective. Sunny was not there, shown as Omori being not there rather than also working for Jawsome, maybe Sunny didn’t realize he was also beinh restricted by grief because of his relationships in his dreams. Kel moved on so he wasn’t employed. Hero convinced himself it was his fault, servicing his grief/jawsome rather than trying to reach out, but remembering when he sees his friend. Aubrey was restricted by grief, but knew she was in a way a victim, shown as her not wanting to be receptionist.

Thank you so much for covering OMORI. This is one of my all time favorite games EVER and I’m so glad I played it for myself nearly 3 years ago. I really wish you had talked more about the other endings, as I feel like it further expands on the psychology of SUNNY. I definitely understand why, as it would require a LOT more work if you wanted to play the game again for each ending. Regardless, every time I come back to this game, I discover something new. SPOILERS AHEAD but I did NOT put two and two together to realize that SUNNY was the one who destroyed the pictures in the album. I also get surprised that I SOB every time the Duet scene plays. Thanks for the amazing video Ben!!! 💜

small things that others may or may not have said 1: Hangman is actually only possible to "lose" in a different route of the Game, taken when you don't open the door to kel on 3 days left, the reason for this to be the case is that there are more segments then is usually played with (like how sometimes people will add body features to give more of a chance to the other player) in this case, the only way to lose is to collect every last incorrect letter which then unlocks another one of the areas locked behind this second route of the game [Additional notes, the holes and cracks left behind by the correct keys can often be interacted with to give extra information] 2: Aubrey in the real world never hits anyone with the Bat, and that's noticeable in the Flavor text of each attack, as not once is the bat brought up [meaning its purely for intimidation purposes) 3: the dream sequences are... not for everyone, a lot of people say that they drag on for too long (especially last resort through humphrey) and they arent wrong, its specifically made to be another random quest, its a DISTRACTION, just like Space Boyfriend's mixtape, just like Sweetheart's Castle, its made to waste Sunny's time, keep him occupied, keep him away from the truth 4: there are a few entities in the dream world that know more then they let on, but knowing where to look for them is tricky, pyrefly forest being the main one i would recomend to find

People are already saying it, but the omori boss doesnt need 3 attempts to finish. There are 6 phases to the omori fight, each happening after omori fails to succumb. You only need to get to the 5th phase. The best way to get there is to cherish after every succumb.

The first three quarters of my first playthrough I was confused because I thought it was meant to be a sad game, like yeah there are some sad things in it but it wasnt living up to what I was told, but that final quarter. From blackspace onward, I am not exaggerating when I say I have never cried as hard as I cried that day. This game is beautiful and managed to cement itself as my favorite game on my first time playing it. I know I shouldnt find this game as relatable as I do but it hits every single time I play it (heck I even started to tear up writing this comment)

what a way to end the year! ever since i found your channel last year and you started making videos on rpgmaker games, i have wanted to know your thoughts on OMORI! your narration kept me engaged with the game's events even though i already knew what was going to happen! i also really appreciate the pauses in the bg music for essential narration plot points (especially the acquisition of hector jr.), they really helped convey the weight and reality of each moment. congratulations on hitting 100k, now 130k!! regarding the events of the last resort, i have seen it interpreted as sunny's last ditch effort in preserving the sense of "adventure" of the dream world. a person can only imagine so much, and it seems like sunny was reaching a dead end. it also doesn't help that sunny has seen just how much the world has changed within 4 years, including his friends and how they all inevitably grow up. getting a job and not going on adventures are what sunny may perceive to be leaving behind childhood, headspace, etc. after seeing how much his friends have changed, sunny exerts control over the memories of his friends to keep them as they are, as he knew them when everything was good.

I feel like the ending to this game is what truly seals it as a classic. That unforgettable icing on an unforgettable cake. There's never going to be a game quite like this one. When this game first released, I wasn't ready for it. I kept coming and going until I finally felt like I could handle truly watching gameplay and analyzing the game for myself. And in those four years of digesting it, I'm still so mixed. It's so tragic, yet so hopeful, and yet you still can't say for certain if Sunny and Basil will really be forgiven for something they've been tormented by for a quarter of their lives. But, with the name of the ost tracks for the hospital, and the hidden cutscene you get for watering dream Basil's flowers, I like to think it's not impossible.

I literally just finished my first SUNNY run of the game when you posted this, and man I have so many feelings... Spoiler talks below As a note, like yeah you are scripted to die to Omori. But if you do well placed Calm Downs and Cherishes, you can do the whole fight within a single life. Once you get to Cherish Mari's Hope, at that point you can let yourself die and choose your ending. You don't actually have to die 3 times and do the fight over again Xd I know you left out lots of the little details, but due to the screen darkness, you probably just didn't see them. But when following Basil's bloody scratch marks in the ground before Omori stabs him and is revealed as your inner demons, there are Basil's fingers scattered around the area, so. Yeah! Fun. I have a weird relationship with this game, whenever I think back on it. I followed OMOCAT's tumblr for years, and their art style rubbed off on my in a way that's still somewhat noticeable today (at least, when I draw humans). I supported the kickstarter and did beta testing for the demo slice, and as such was given a key for the game on Steam shortly before the full public release. Years went by, controversies, analysis videos, fanart, discourse, drama... and I hadn't opened the game a single time. I didn't even install it. Through all the mayhem, I managed to avoid every single major spoiler there was online until the fandom faded into an easily side-stepped shadow. It's sat collecting metaphorical dust all this time, forgotten. At the start of this year, a group I attend had an activity where we made New Year's Resolutions bingo cards. In one of the squares, I wrote that I wanted to finish a game I had in storage, but had never touched. OMORI ended up coming to mind..... and then I didn't even get started on it until September. I still have the other route to complete, but I was determined to finish a playthrough before the year ended. I'm glad I did.
