Not this video, but a story about all your videos. My name is Chuck, and my wife is Penny. My wife found your page and watched in amazement, as yor wife was able to travel with you. She uses a walker and wouldn't ride on my goldwing. She was relentless on going to look at spyders. We ended up buying a 18 rt limited and now love it. Thank you and your wife for sharing this part of your lives. My wife can't wait until she can ride with me and add to our enjoyment. Again thank yous so much.

You really make valid points Coach. On two wheels, you were taught that postion 2 was to be avoided at all cost because of fluids and debris. When I went to 3, i thought, hey, I'm good now. BIG MISTAKE. Great training video.

Thank you Coach Bob. These are inspiring, I am about to rent a Can Am for the 1st time. This is after not riding a motorcycle for more years than I care to mention. Your videos are really helping me get familiar with the spyder, and somethings to look out for. You have a very reassuring voice. Thanks again.

Thanks for this video, Coach Bob. I just bought a new to me 2021 RTL and am loving it. But after a lifetime of riding 2-wheelers, it is definitely a new experience. Your videos are really helping me get more comfortable with the mechanics of the ride.

My preferred position is "all of the above" mainly because of the state of our roads here in Quebec. Deep grooves in the pavement are the worst because they pull you in unless you are able to line up with your left or right knee (positions 1 and 3) and that is where you hydroplane. Potholes are everywhere on our roads, in all three positions; so, sometimes you constantly have to switch (a pothole once blew out my left front tire on my then brand-new Sea-to-Sky). Most highways are pretty good, so I prefer riding position 1 1/2 to occupy my lane. When an 18-wheeler wants to pass, I move to position 3 to avoid the wind draft from the trailer. When it rains, it's position 1, and maybe 2 depending on the grooves in the pavement; I avoid position 3 because that's where the rain water ends up. In my group's rides, you either ride position 1 or 3, although it is not recommended by BRP and many other riding groups (I was riding position 1 when I hit that pothole that blew my left front tire). And on secondary routes and country roads is where I really improved my riding skills while I constantly scan the road and the horizon (yes, a deer did jump out of a ditch in front of me while at 55mph; as Maxwell Smart used to say "missed it by that much!"). Great tips Coach, once again! Cheers!

Good video Coach Bob, Also, what many forget is that during darkness, stay as close to the center land as possible. This helps to avoid people not walking in dark clothes on the side of the road as well as give a little more reaction time should a deer, boar, or moose (maybe not in Florida) run out in the road. Cheers from Swede in Mexico

CB3 so glad you finished up with reminding people to practice their skills, yesterday I witnessed a rider lock up the rear wheel and skid 60 feet into the back of a car, I was amazed he was able to walk away with some minor road rash. After talking with him he has only been riding 2 weeks and the bike was a graduation gift... ZERO SKILLS. I did tell he to contact the local MSF .

Coach just wanted to give you an update, my wife and I have moved our BRC to June 15-16 instead of waiting until October. We are a week away and really excited to start this new chapter in our lives. I really appreciate all of your advice on your videos. I hope to see you at a rally sometime in the future. Be safe and enjoy the ride.

Another great video coach. I agree, always try to ride in position 1. Position 2 is pretty much not rideable in this part of Canada. Due to frost damage, there is a visible hump in the middle. From early March to June 1 we have road bans in place. All heavy trucks can only carry 75% of their loads . This helps mitigate the damage caused as the frost comes out of the road. I also agree , position 3 should only be used when absolutely necessary. I worked on my skills yesterday and did a 700 km(430 mile) round trip to one of our amazing National Parks,, Jasper National Park. Lots of pot holes this time of year. Great way of building skills, trying to avoid them😎

Great video on the three lanes of the road for a Spyder. I agree with you as my favorite position is next to the center line. One of the main reasons is I usually rode on back country roads in NH. I find riding in this position and coming into a right curve it gives me a greater view of what is ahead of me. Whichever it’s a car entering from a driveway, side street or parking lot I will be able to see entering traffic sooner and they can see me. Also in this lane I can see that I am approaching someone walking, biking, farm equipment of whichever sooner. But with that said I do use all three lanes to help with the road conditions, weather and obstacles that can be in the way. Thank again and wishing you and your family the safe travels and good health.

Very good points Coach Bob. I am one of the riders who uses position 2 a lot. Not any more. I do use position 3 though. I live in rural Idaho where we have what are called benches (flat hills). So when I can't see what is oncoming going up a bench, I am in position 3. It can be very likely that what I can't see is a piece of farm equipment that takes up 1 1/2 lanes, or a cattle trailer, or horse trailer. Same thing on blind curves. Hope you and your family are doing well.

Hi Coach Bob Just like any vehicle if you give them space they will definitely move into yours Sometimes the Can Am don't like that center because of the crown of the road. Besides visibility following somebody you drive their habits not yours. Good video.

Great video and thanks for posting. I use position 3 when making a right hand turn. On more than one occasion when approaching the intersection for a right hand turn an idiot has tried to pass me on the right going around the corner. I now block that part of the lane and stay close to the shoulder. Since then I have not had anyone attempt to pass me on the right when making a right hand turn. What magnifies the problem is the abundance of idiot drivers in my area. My reasoning is the same as yours for riding in position 1. I also ride a two wheeler and follow your guidelines for all 3 positions and I never use position 2.

Then there's that multi position... you know... the one where that dang obstacle is moving... causing you to keep changing your lane position in a hurry... like a squirrel that stops and starts a couple times... usually ending up with a particular part of the human anatomy going into a pucker position 😳😵😬

Didn't see any squirrels on my ride through Jasper National Park yesterday, but did have a herd of Bighorn Sheep in the middle of the 2 lane highway. They lick the leftover salt that's put down during the winter.

Great video CB3. One question on four lane roads when in the left lane do you change your position numbering? I do and make my number one position on the right side by the white line and number three position on the left by the yellow fog line.

All of your videos are really good. But you need to come to the Appalachian mountains where I live. The flat straight roads you ride are so easy to navigate a blind person could ride them. We deal with 180 degree off camber turns with a 300' drop off on one side and a rock cliff on the other. Zero shoulder and lanes that are two feet narrower than the flat roads you ride. Throw in coal trucks running insane speeds coming at you on blind corners half in your lane, and your skills come from just plain survival between points A&B. Everything you say is correct, but if you want to really put your riding to the test, the coalfields of eastern Kentucky or western west Virginia are where you will find some of the prettiest and most difficult roads in America. The "Tail of the Dragon" in east Tennessee is mild in comparison. It's a tourist attraction, the real roads are abundant in the coalfields.

Thanks for the video, Coach Bob! I was pondering it during my 65-mile loop around West Austin this morning. I also tend to ride in lane position 1 (on two-lane roads). I'm curious., how does your lane position choice differ when you are on a multi-lane road? Do you still prefer lane position 1 if you are travelling in lane 1, 2, or even 3? Thanks!

I like position 1 because of stupid drivers, it gives me swerve room, but on the back roads, I'm in position 3 for that same reason. People come around the curves too wide for my taste.
