Very cool tech, though for $330 I was expecting On to scan my foot and print the upper perfectly true to size (I thought that was the whole point of a printed shoe 😂)
@LFKY132 күн бұрын
My question is: The new Alphafly’s cost $285-$300 so why isn’t Nike getting the same treatment of skepticism and demands as On? I believe you’re paying for a new laceless technology that is almost completely carbon neutral, sustainable and made in house. Nike is making their products in china/vietnam with god knows what working conditions with 0 sustainability in mind other than maybe the box it comes in.
@matthewpena41692 күн бұрын
The tech is definitely adaptable to personalized fits in the future assuming the lasts can be easily printed. also, if the smooth interior is bothersome, the lasts could be textured, and the sprayed-on material will take up that texture.
@oiagreek2 күн бұрын
@@LFKY13but Nike doesn’t advertise their production tech like On does. If they are making the tech the highlight of it, people would reasonably expect that as part of the shoe experience and are paying for it

For anybody concerned about the longevity even after Mike’s review. I want you guys to know that I attended a private event at the On NYC Labs and got to talk to Johannes (the creator of LightSpray) for a good amount of time and he’s so confident about the material that his next project is to put this in a more accesible daily trainer. It seems LightSpray is here to stay for the long run.

Agree with some of the other comments. For $330 I would expect them to scan my foot and make the upper match me 1:1 which would be amazing. Glad there is growing competition from On though, even if I don't prefer their shoes.
@kofuzi2 күн бұрын
I was thinking about it quite on my run after publishing this video, and I'm thinking that, depending on how marketing costs get allocated to this shoe, how R&D costs get allocated, and the relative small number of units that they will likely be making, this shoe probably costs On more than $330 to produce. If they made like 10x (or some other hypothetical amount) the shoes at the same price, maybe they'd make profit. If they made 15x, then maybe the price could come down (which isn't typically a priority for On) or there could be more customization. I did ask about customization though and how it would intersect with the rules against bespoke or custom shoes for elite athletes at World Athletics events. The On rep I was speaking with didn't have an answer for me at the time.

@@kofuzi believe it or not, they are surely making a profit on this shoe. because we already know that a flagship shoe can be sold for over 450$. it's really hard to price in the r&d because that usually has a different amortization schedule.

The future I'm excited about: Going to the store. Getting your feet scanned. See what is the best fit of lets say 10 predetermined lasts. have the machine spray that last in a few minutes. I just don't think the economics of this machine can let that happen :(
@LFKY132 күн бұрын
@@itaymeiri5745 not only the economics but the lack of engineers that are educated about this machine’s hardware/software plays a huge role as well. Johannes had mentioned he didn’t even want to be at NYC but that he needed to be there because only 2-3 people at On know how to troubleshoot and work around the machine in case of a failure.
@kofuzi2 күн бұрын
I can't remember if it was Drew, Bromka, or someone else that I was with in New York when we were watching the machine, but that person reminded me that localized shoe production was the promise with Adidas 3D printed shoes, too. And I feel like the industry would have to just change so much, and shoe stores would have to continually invest so much, that I'm skeptical that we are anywhere close to any brand having any machine that would be able to custom produce a shoe based on a customer's actual foot in real time.

Don't get me wrong the upper and the process they're using to make it looks cool but as soon as I saw the shoe in the thumbnail...what brought me here was what the middle was going to be like. I don't buy shoes for the upper, but rather the missile experience. The upper is a nice icing and as long as its got a good lockdown, I couldn't careless. What I care about is what I'm going to be landing on with each strikes/steps and will it be as wonderful as the beautiful design of the shoe.
@kofuzi2 күн бұрын
I'm pretty much the same. An upper can ruin a shoe, but it usually isn't a selling feature for me. And just like I thought the lightness of the foam in the Evo 1 was it's killer feature, I think the lightness of the LS (which is possible because of this upper) is really quite impressive.

It all looks amazing. This is how the future is built. However, I am keeping a close eye on long-term durability. The fact that it will be on spikes, in my opinion, does not necessarily mean that it will be durable during longer use. Elite can replace these spikes whenever they want, so the only thing that is really known for now is that you can use this material hard. How long? We'll see, I keep my fingers crossed!
@kofuziКүн бұрын
I will concede that the use of the material in a spike is not direct proof that the material has durability, but I think we should also recognize that there is no direct proof one way or the other (otherwise we would just refer to that longevity data). stay tuned for the 100 mile review.

the foam is pebax that is partially bio-based. I would anticipate that the shoe handles cold temperatures as well as other pebax compounds (I want to call this a bio pebax, but bio pebax is a trade name and there must be a reason why On doesn't use that phrase).

Now I will admit I may have missed something, but I don't remember hearing the word 'lockdown' in this. I really admire the omission and consider this a big step forward for Kofuzi. I am not kidding. ShoeTubers seem to have invented the term in relation to shoes. I have never experienced nor sought lockdown. I have never wondered how much lockdown a shoe possessed. How could I when it didn't exist? I had never heard of it prior to KZbin's popularity. I am not being sarcastic in the least. Keep this up!
@levandmarthapolyakin-aaron21832 күн бұрын
Well, most of us have experienced the phenomenon when it’s lacking, whether you had heard that word or not. When a shoe feels like your foot is wallowing around in a shoe in any way instead of feeling like an extension of your foot (ideally, you’re not thinking at all about the shoe when things fit right), it’s very frustrating. Everyone’s foot is different in relation to every model of shoe. When too many runners complain of the same thing--either a lacing system that’s not cinching securely, or a heel that too many runners tend to slide out of too easily to give 2 examples--then that shoe may have a flaw or at least weakness in that department. What else would you propose to call that phenomenon and why do you deny that it exists? At the very least, one should be able to state that “for me, the lack of supportive elements combined with the voluminous toebox of the Rebel 4 didn’t provide a secure lockdown”-for a personal example.
@brianway42402 күн бұрын
@levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183 You claim lockdown exists. Did you make such a claim prior to KZbin existence? I don't think anybody did.
