Thanks for the fair review Edd. I bought the Cloudsurfer 7 on a 40% discount on the basis of a plethora of positive reviews. I was underwhelmed after running in them. I felt duped. There are a lot of other running shoes that are much cheaper and much better. Of course some shoes work for other people and not for yourself but really we are talking about an old school EVA midsole foam with holes in it! So many of these type of EVA foams can work well for a short period and feel fantastic and then bottom out (lose their mojo). The On brand is being marketed as a premium brand with a premium price but in my estimation when it comes to performance falls short.
@Sabundy Жыл бұрын
I feel ON is just one of those very hyped and trendy brands that is a LOT more about fashion than actual sports performance. I had to laugh when the world number one woman Tennis player Swiatek who is sponsored by ON played in Asics shoes for the French Open final because the ON shoes she was provided with were so crap 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Of course she had to come out and do damage control afterwards by saying it was just because ON is "making the ultimate tennis shoes" and they just are not ready yet 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Athletes will spin any old BS because a brand is paying them a LOT of money.

I have 2 runs in the on cloudboom echo 3 and I love them I can't say that they are good for a marathon but for 5k and 10k they perfect. They remind my my of Takumi sen 8 in terms of firmness of the midsole. Yes they are expensive but for me works better they any other super shoes on the market. Because they have this Pebax foam they are nothing like other on shoes this ones are my first pair. I don't really understand why some many reviewers said a lot of bad things about the shoe. For me Takumi sen 8 is from my point of view the best shoes ever made so far and this one from On comes along but in terms of mony and value I will stick with Takumi, I use the On shoe by doing intervals. I was more curious to see how the shoes are and I am glad I did they are a delicious treat.

Thanks Ed. The cynic in me thinks that this brand was created to break into a very competitive premium end of the running shoe market and the 'cloud technology' was dreamt up to differentiate it, not because it works any better than a traditional foam midsole. Their latest performance shoe seems to pretty much do away with the holes! Maybe this is a nice premium leisure shoe, that you can run in?

Few comments after running on other ON, including the v1 of the Cloudstratus. ON shoes are hard and they require long breaking periods, then they become a bit softer. Not Endorphin soft, but softer. Quality is superb. Durability, phenomenal. But I still cannot run on these, too harsh. Perhaps this v3 proves me wrong. The Cloudsurfer seems to be better in that regard as they removed the useless speedboard. That said, I retired my v1 after 300 kilometres and used them as walking shoes. For that they are very good and comfortable. But this experience is largely based on v1.

Good morning Edd, I have the Cloudstratus 2 and would agree with your verdict but for different reasons. The upper fits my wider foot very well and it doesn´t feel too warm to me. But I don´t really have made up my mind about the midsole. To me the landings feel firm (forefoot striker) and I don´t get much energy back but the outsole/midsole feels grippy and well damped without being unstable. The ride feels kind of unremarkable if reliable. Here in Germany we have to pay 180 € for the old version (startin price) and 190 € for version 3. To me that is outrageously overpriced but still, the shoe is not that bad that I would want to send it back. On paper (pun alarm) the Superblast should be miles ahead of this one but it (my sample) gives me pain in the achilles tendon (way too soft). I´m curious about your take on the Cloudsurfer. I didn´t order this one because the reviews say that the fit in the forefoot would be alot narrower. Bring it On, Edd :)
@EDDBUD Жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s not a energy returner as such. More a good cushion in the back. Grip on point but the midsole approach does limit the use case a little

One shoe to rule them all would be great, But if I really am needing two shoes to do both short distance running and sprinting that is fine. Doesn't matter about the budget. I just want what makes the best sense, But it would be nice if one shoe like the SUPERBLAST might do both really well.. Genuine question: does anyone actually think On make good shoes for running? I live in Zürich, so they have huge market share here due to Swiss loyalty, Roger Federer's involvement, sponsorships etc. I see way more people wearing them casually than running on the roads/trails. It just seems that the midsole design is sketchy - not very durable, adds no significant improvement over competitors' shoes and are really high priced. I think their apparel looks great but seems their shoes have a way to go to be any good/value for money.

Oh, Nike has made more $ from lifestyle shoes for decades! But they still have a few gems in racing shoes. I can't think of one ON that I would actually run in. I land on the balls of my foot running slow, fast, or just walking, and I can tell you first-hand drop doesn't matter. It comes down more to having a level platform and having the same amount of cushion from heel to toe to make the ride feel as natural as possible. A wider forefoot/ toebox helps too for better stability because you're using less foot and weight to land. Forefoot strikers are landing on that flexable part of the foot, so having some flexability where your foot flexes helps for that smooth transition onto your toes. A late stage rocker like a toe rocker is ok as long as it starts after the point of your landing. Myself speaking, I have no problem landing forefoot on the 9mm drop of the Nike Invincible 2 or the 10 mm drop of Puma Volocity 2. The 5mm drop of the Hoka Mach 5 makes me land midfoot where the 5mm drop of the Topo Cyclone 2 is perfect. If you don't mind ground feel and a mild arch and dont overly pronate, the Cyclone 2 is great and works best for me as a forefoot striker.
