ON Cloudstratus 3 Review - First Impressions (FAST)

I don't remember where I read it but one elite runner described Cloudstraus as one of On Clouds fastest shoes and not an average daily trainer. The new colorways are awesome. Something I was never crazy about with On running shoes.

You, Andy, have one of the very very rare channels that gives us true long-term reviews which is why you were the first ever running channel I started to follow, and IF these hold up well in the long term then they could well turn out to be good value for money despite that crazy price tag!! Looking forward to seeing how many miles you happily put into them!!

I'm pleased to see you're enjoying On's shoes recently! I had the previous iteration of this and found it a little baggy in the forefoot, so it sounds like this would be similar. I think you'd enjoy the Cloudmonster too

Interesting review. I had the Cloud Stratus 2. I put over 700 miles on it before I retired it. It was a great all round workhorse, and yes I found it surprisingly pacy when it needed to be. My first thoughts on the Cloud Stratus 2 was that it felt and ran lighter than it actually was. I ran a marathon in it and my legs and feet felt great at the end. I'm looking forward to trying this version out. I found it a far better shoe than the Cloud Monster.

Had the same experience in the cloudmonster, on the heavier side but just couldn’t help but pick up the pace. Doesn’t make sense, but I could almost race in the thing.

I have the same experience with the Cloudmonster, the geometry really works well with my gait, the shoe literally rolls me forward. I’m on my third pair of Cloudmonster and now I’m curious about the Cloudstratus. Thanks for your review Andy

The v1 was very stiff due to a useless nylon speedboard... The Cloudsurfer removed the speedboard and made a comfortable shoe. Is this any good in the midsole? The shoes you mentioned as competition are very soft. The v1 was NOT a running shoe...

I heard the v1 wasn’t the greatest… I’d say it’s come a very long way! This is nice and soft, I wouldn’t quite say “bouncy” but it had a small spring in the midsole so it’s definitely in the sweet spot for me 👍

Ran in these last night for an On demo run. I was shocked when I asked for a US 9.5 that it fit my 2E wide foot. I've never given On a thought cause they are a soccer mom brand here in the states but man, this shoe was so fun to run in. I was shocked how it "wanted" to go fast for what looks and feels like a max cushion daily trainer. I am seriously tempted to buy a pair lol

@@Navanirunz That's fair. I ended up with a pair of these and they are great for any uptempo work I want. I can use them for easy/recovery runs but they want to go fast to me.

Would this shoe be easier on my knees? Im new to running, do about 20-30 miles a week and I believe my current shoes dont help absorb the impact on me knees. After I ran 10 miles one day My knees hurt for a few days.

Would you say these would make a versatile “one shoe for all tasks” for a beginner training for their first half or full marathon? Saw these at a great sale price at my local running store

Absolutely… for me they handle zone 1 and 2 paces really well and I wouldn’t be adverse to long run in them at all. I think the downfall will be the really fast work though

I usually order and hope they fit! I just return if they don’t. Our local running store is 30 mins away, a great little shop but don’t have the new releases so there’s not really anywhere local for me to do that

How would you compare it to the Clifton 9 for comfort / cushioning?

I will do some comparisons soon, but they’re quite similar in cushioning, this one is more responsive though (more bounce back)

I think the sole on the lates Cloudsurfer is more cushy/soft and that makes the Cloudsurfer less versatile, more of an easy run shoe

I won't get this one then :) Kind of confusing if their marathon race shoe you looked at the other day seems relatively narrow and this one relatively wide. Is there also an element of the runner not the shoe when talking about paces :) I never thought that say the Invincible (very similar weight to this) was in any fast but when I did really try hard in them one time well I went "faster".

Yeah probably won’t fit your foot mate! It could be the runner… but I’ve also done runs in shoes like this before for moderate work and usually hit around 6:50s so I think this shoe has a bit of something “extra” about it

@@TimGrose it fits me okay… the heel counter lockdown sucks on my left foot because I have a narrow heel and a tender instep if I lock the laces too much particularly in that shoe since the tongue is so damn thin. But my right foot that has no problems it fits very well. Been contemplating taking them to a shoe repair place and getting the tongue modified with more padding.
