In Ephesians 4:22-24 St. Paul admonishes all believers to leave aside their old ways and to “put on the “new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
How does this happen? How are we changed from the inside to become more like Jesus Christ? In this series of “On the Journey,” Matt Ken and Kenny tackle these important questions and offer encouragement on how to experience the image of Christ being restored in us “from one degree of glory to another” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
In this first episode, they ask the question: what is the essential thing Jesus demands of those who would be his disciples? Is it to come to Him? Believe in Him? Follow Him? Obey Him? Love Him? Serve Him? What lies at the heart of all the various ways in which the call of Jesus is expressed in the Gospels?

I like the dissection analogy. I grew up Pentecostal and every sermon would see a different bit of frog tissue served up for analysis. It was up to us to sort out the pile of body parts and assemble some sort of gospel story that made sense. Try to create a 30 second elevator speech of how to be saved... It was not until leaving that I began to see a larger story, and a clearer picture, of Jesus. The writings of monastic contemplatives helped me gain a cohesiveness of thought by focusing on fundamental things, like Blaise Pascal, or Thomas Merton, and the like. Remove my gaze from the laboratory microscope and go up to a higher vantage point and see the sweep and scope and depth and breadth of things as they are or ought to be.

Repent and be baptised, yes, but believing is the first step…just as I am. The Grace to follow Jesus comes as needed.

In 1995 I moved from Boston to LA and got "saved" at the 4 Square Church pastored by Jack Hayford. I think I remember Kenny as a young minister? Anyway, I was baptized at the Armenian church close to the 4 Square church. I was born a cradle Catholic but had fallen away. I went to many different denominations to worship, Hollywood Presbyterian, Messianic Jews for Jesus, and also went back to the Catholic church in North Hollywood but was weary of my Catholic heritage from all the different things I was hearing. I do recall that the only church I have ever wept in while I was in California was the Catholic Mass ❤! I now realize as a revert to my Catholic faith that is the real presence of Jesus in the eucharist that my soul is responding to. Even before I had heard of Marcus, Scott Hahn, Matt, Ken, and Kenny etc...I would sit in Mass and say as Peter said "Lord where would I go?" Jesus has the words to everlasting life! And unless I eat his flesh and drink his blood I have no life within me. Thank you Fr. Mike for pointing out the obvious in Jn ch 6. And thank you to all the protestant converts to Catholicism who have helped me to understand and defend my faith, our faith 🙏 ❤

I wonder how reformed Christians handle St. Peter's observation in his second canonical epistle (2 Peter 3:16) that some of St. Paul's writings can be twisted by others 'to their own destruction.'

31:00 - "Modern masters of science are much impressed with the need of beginning all inquiry with a fact. The ancient masters of religion were quite equally impressed with that necessity. They began with the fact of sin--a fact as practical as potatoes. Whether or no man could be washed in miraculous waters, there was no doubt at any rate that he wanted washing. But certain religious leaders in London, not mere materialists, have begun in our day not to deny the highly disputable water, but to deny the indisputable dirt. Certain new theologians dispute original sin, which is the only part of Christian theology which can really be proved." GK Chesteron - Orthodoxy, "The Maniac"

If you believe this is the Protestant doctrine of salvation you are mistaken. I've heard this from a lot of Catholics. It would be a good idea to get the correct understanding of what they are teaching before repeating it to a Catholic audience. I grew up protestant before I converted so I am well acquainted with how they think. Sometimes Catholics do a very sloppy job of relating Protestant doctrine. I think it would be better if they just talked about their own stuff and left the rest alone. The other thing is that Catholics need to do this without being offensive and they can be so offensive.

Debra, thanks for the comment. If you listen to the episode, you'll note that we three all came from different Protestant backgrounds. Two of us were seminary trained Protestant ministers who learned our tradition and soteriology from our seminaries. Notice that both of us had exceptionally different understandings of "the Protestant doctrine of salvation." Thus, we also conclude that there is no such thing as "the protestant doctrine," but only MANY varying and relatively disparate versions depending on the group you're in. We repeat it to a Catholic audience because we are all former non-Catholics, and the program is a discussion of our journey into the faith from several traditions. Thanks for watching! - Kenny

What do you mean by "this"? There is more than one description of Protestant salvation.

@atrifle8364 and that really is the crux of the problem, isn't it? Tens of thousands of Protestant denominations all calling themselves the true church. The truth is that Jesus established His Church in AD 33. He gave His Cburch His authority, which He received from God. One Church. That Church is the Catholic Church. The evidence is overwhelming that the Catholic Church was established by Jesus. He gave it a visible leader (St. Peter). He gave His Church a hierarchy (pope, bishops, priests, and deacons. He gave His Church seven holy sacraments. He gave His Church His mission. He gave His Church structure. And He gave His Church His authority. Authority to preach, teach, interpret scripture, and create doctrine that is bound on Earth and in Heaven. All of this is extremely visible through the writings of the Early Church Fathers.
