Mark Immelman, golf broadcaster, interviews renowned golf instructor - John Erickson
______________________
ABOUT THE EPISODE:
John Erickson is an American professional golfer who played, and won several events, on the Canadian Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia Tour. Erickson was an early protege, alongside Mac O'Grady and Bobby Clampett, of The Golfing Machine (book) by Homer Kelley.
After John retired from professional competition he took to research and instruction and developed the Advanced Ball-Striking System which ostensibly teaches elements exhibited by the best ball-strikers in the history of the game.
He joins #OntheMark to talk about things great ball-strikers do with a special reference to Ben Hogan.
Specifically John dives into the following:
Differences between Swingers and Hitters,
Proper Acceleration as a Key to Great Striking,
Creating Force (Mass x Acceleration)
"Pushing" and "Pulling" at the same time in the swing,
Wide vs Narrow Stance-widths,
The Body Pivot and a Pivot-Driven Hit,
His "4:30" line of Delivery, and
Leverage of the Rotation of the Torso in the golfswing.

So awesome to hear about Peter Senior from an overseas teacher. I watched him towel up a young Bryson Dechambeau at the age of 55 around Huntingdale in Melbourrne. The guy is an enigma.

@45:08 so happy for John to talk about forearm rotation and the late pressure onto the golf ball because this is something that's made a huge difference to my swing. Would have loved J.E to be more specific on what he thinks caused the better ball striking sound of greg norman, what really is hold shaft flex? Thank you Mark for inviting J.E I have seen some videos of him in the past. Always a tremendous interviewer as you let guests speak more and you ask those few key questions that keep them sharing.

To answer your question... acceleration vs momentum. A club hitting the ball at 110 mph can be either still accelerating.. or have already reached it's maximum point of acceleration. Only acceleration can put tangential stress on the shaft.. or for simplicity... stress the shaft backward. This makes contact with the ball much more vicious even given the same velocity as a club that is not accelerating but hitting at the same velocity (momentum vs force). I don't like getting overly technical because people get lost and I'm not here to speak over anyone.. just common sense. A pre loaded or stressed shaft is not going to slow down nearly as much from the collision of impact.. therefore... it's going to have a different sound... and different outcome... mainly a much more piercing ball flight from the accelerated strike. Hogan was said to have had a "different sound" when he stuck it.. even if the ball went the same distance as a competitor.. it "sounded" different. More mass in the clubhead, less velocity but more acceleration is a different formula than most use. Moe was the same way. Swung a 16 ounce driver. I know this first hand because I held it personally. Knudson the same thing. It's a different way of doing things.. but the results are still being discussed decades later. I have a condensed video on all the tee to green shots Knudson did across 5 or 6 Shell's matches on my youtube channel if you care to look. It's extremely impressive to say the least. Everyone has seen Hogan's Shell's match.. but there is other great stuff out there to study and learn from. I find it very inspiring.

@@lagpressure thanks for sharing that insight. I do recall Tiger saying Anthony Kim's ball striking also had a different sound than others. Who in the modern game do you think has this? For sure Tiger at some point yes? I do wonder however as with the change from balata to solid core (going farther, diff spin behaviour), club & shaft technology, the distance game and course setups, would the masters of yesteryear still swing the same. As much as I love Trevino I do wonder how he would fare post 2000 golf.
@lagpressure
@lagpressure 11 ай бұрын
@@77bovi Those are all good questions, but I think the answer to then vs now is multi fold and a bit complex. Different objectives produce different outcomes and the technique to achieve them is going to be different as well. If we are talking just distance, then of course the modern game is superior. If we are talking ball control, accuracy and precision shot making, then the classic game would be superior.

One thing I dont like is that he suggests "swinging" is more difficult. I would say it depends on the player. I know for sure if you tried to make a hitter out of me it would be much more difficult. I am a lefty who plays right handed.

Mark, Just watched this video and he is basically describing a "Low Core Swing" as described by Dr. David Wright. I am a Wright Balanced Fitter, and we find that there are less than 20% of all male body's can move in this fashion. But nothing is for everyone. Hogan was low core, Trevino was low core. It would be interesting to see if John is low core...and initially learned to play outside of his core? Good job on the interview.

The people that he said are hitters still had a follow-through which makes it a swing. He thinks that someone has to focus on moving their left shoulder faster than than their left arm. It would be impossible for the left arm to move faster than the shoulder. The shoulder is connected to the body and isn't moving as far as the arm so it would be impossible for the left shoulder to not move "faster". He says "hold shaft flex" but that doesn't make sense. You are creating shaft flex, not holding it.
@lagpressure
@lagpressure 11 ай бұрын
Obviously the arms can move independent of the body/ torso. You could put your back and shoulders against a wall... and still be able to move your arms both back and forth laterally and up and down. This what most golfers do... too much independent arm motion. Holding shaft flex means you flex the shaft, put stress on it... flex it backwards, then accelerate to maintain that flex or hold that flex as long as possible. If you stall or decelerate, the flex in the shaft will release.. or you will lose the flex. Great strikers (hitters) hold that shaft flex much longer than your average golfer.

No rotation till arms are down kinda sounds like no turn cast.
@lagpressure

@@andybecker5001 You have to know what you are doing... we teach students how to apply the techniques of great hitters. The proper application of the lateral move, with the proper arm and wrist protocols make this work fantastically. We have cohesive body tension drills, hand attitudes drills, that would inhibit or make it impossible to do what you are suggesting. Good question though..

Nobody can hold shaft flex into impact. Nobody. Can’t be done. It’s never been done. John refuses to take up Golf Evolution on their offer for a FREE day on GEARS to get measured and prove it. And the right arm is not held frozen through impact. It’s never been done. The arm continuously straightens the entire downswing.
@jacobr4558

Maybe you cant physically hold it because of the momentum but you can have 3 very different intentions with the trail arm. It can be dragged through(totally limp and going with momentum), driven through(driving trail elbow toward target around), or torqued(deltoid rotation and arm pressure) through or combinations of those. There are probably other options that I'm not even familiar with but I can definitely hit the ball very effectively with all three of those methods! One will feel like a hula hoop the other will feel like a hammer ir a steering wheel.

All of this confusion stems from Homer Kelley-GOD REST HIS LOVELY ECCENTRIC SOUL- who reduces the trail arm to its telescopic agency and discounts its gyroscopic agency( its torsional agency). It's as if he didn't have a right brain. He wantonly fragments without unifying. It's poison to think HIT V SWING! I have no greater enemy than bad advice! Peace to all!
