Created and posted in memory of Chris Squire who passed away June 27, 2015. Progressive music lost a great treasure, but his musical legacy will live forever.
From Wikipedia:
"On the Silent Wings of Freedom" is a song by Yes. It appears on the 1978 Tormato album. The song
was never released as a single.
The song is the final and longest song on the album. On this particular track, as with most of
the album, Squire sends his bass through his foot pedal controls to give it a more harmonized
sound. Thus, the bass line had a different tonality to it from previous albums, yet was still
able to retain his signature "growl". Though the album itself is considered to be one of Yes's
weakest, most Yes fans, whether they like the album or not, favour this one song, as it is the
closest track to other fan favourites like "Close to the Edge", "Heart of the Sunrise" and
"Awaken".
Lyrics:
On the silent wings of Freedom
Where I offer myself midst the balancing of the Sun
On the winds of Celestial Seasons
That would carry me on, midst the balance of being one
On the dream of our love Eternal
That will eventually bring our living once more with you
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we come with sound
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we go around and round
On the back of your forty-second screamdown
Do you choose to be lost midst the challenge of being one
On the flight of regardless feelings
As you hurtle to fear midst the challenge of everyone
...
On the darkest night so painful
Do you hunger for love midst the torture of being one
On the passing light of Easing
Have you seen you inside midst the being of Everyone
To the common goal of Freedom
Where we offer ourselves midst the balancing of the Sun
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we come with sound
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we go around and round

Regarding the eX Yes Led Zeppelin (XYZ) band (Plant in vocals, Chris Squire in the bass and vocals, Alan White on the drums and Jimmy Page on the electric guitar..., you'll find the fistful of songs they did without Robert Plant. Just Squire singing. Perhaps my 2 combos (Led Zeppelin plus Robert Plant solo) & Yes mix will help to imagine how it would've been. You used capital letters for the band members’ names, but a small ‘g’ for God. Why can’t people get this right? Use the capital ‘G’ for THE ONE GOD who created you, and the small “g” for all false “gods.”

It truly amazed me how during the late 60's through the 70's could produced so many very talented musicians in various supergroups...I grew up listening to all these fantastic bands that coloured my life..Jon Lord, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Tony Banks, Ken Hensley on the keyboards..Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Steve Howe, Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, Toni Iommi, Carlos Santana, Mark Knopfler, Rory Gallagher, Pete Townshend, Steve Hackett, Martin Birch, Mark Farner and many more on guitars..bassists- John Paul Jones, Geezer Butler, Chris Squire, Roger Waters, Greg Lake, John Enwhistle, Jack Bruce, Gary Thain...drums- John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ian Paice, Carl Parlmer, Simon Kirke, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Carmine Appice, Michael Shrieve...vocals- Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers, David Byron, Ian Gillan, David Coverdale, Jon Anderson, Terry Reid, Steve Winwood, Mick Jagger, John Mayall, Freddie Mercury, Ozzy Osbourne, Roger Daltrey and many more..and of course the four members of The Beatles...these are/were the people that made music irresistable..they mastered their instruments in their own style and the chemistry within the bands that made their musics so intriguing...

On the album sleeve, Squire is credited with playing "Harmonised Rickenbacker bass" on this track, which I think meant he was running the signal through an Eventide Harmoniser, which wasn't part of his pedalboard but was rather a studio unit. It also sounds to me like he's using a bass wah-wah. I know I bought a Thunderbolt bass wah pedal back then to try and get that sound on my instrument.

It was also his Band :) he taught himself to play music which is the part I like, because I did it myself! Ended up playing a 4001 too.. But I hadn't any English friends, alas. Squire could play the music he heard inside, which is the greatest thing in any art form, in my opinion, to put a part of yourself, your perceptions, into something, and it takes a lot out of oneself, just learning the craft by yourself. Take care from Minnesota, USA 🌲❄️

pop gun that riff by squire is so good, one of my favorite riffs of all time, the very back bone of one of yes' trippiest ethereal songs. i've always loved most of this album, very strange and very different from anything else at the time. yes really were masters of writing a song in multiple parts like a symphony.

It was probably a Birotron. It was intended as the successor to the Mellotron but was railroaded by the introduction of polyphonic synthesis. It was invented by David Biro & championed by Rick Wakeman, who was known to have used it on Going for the One, Tormato & his solo album Criminal record.
