John and Hank. Thank you very much for running the Project for Awesome this year. We'll make sure Not Forgotten will use the $25,000 to save some kids' lives in Peru. Will report back in 12 months.

I remember watching John's videos the few years before the publication of The Fault in Our stars and then when I finally got around to reading the book. I could slowly pick up on the things John mentioned in videos that slipped into the book. During the writing process he would make videos on topics that in one way or another ended up in the book. It was really cool to recognize those themes while reading and I can't wait to do it again with the next book.

Remember that time when John went to the ruins in Indianapolis and was like, "Nerdfighters, what is this and why is it here?" and people told him and then in TFiOS he was like, "Yeah, they put these replica ruins in a park but it fell into disrepair and now they're like actual ruins"? I find it incredibly amusing that he just crowdsourced his novel research.

I remember when he said something about a roller coaster that only goes up at one point. That was really cool; I feel like he had been writing and wanted to share some of it with us, but he couldn't really because spoilers/publications issues, so he just shared a little without sharing that he was sharing.

Thanks for making this comment! I felt similarly when I read TFiOS and Paper Towns. I looked for an online conversation on how John's relationship with Nerdfighteria changes the reading experience and didn't find it. I find it really unique to "hear" the author's "voice" that way. I wonder if it may become more common going forward. I also wonder if that experience would have been experienced by someone in certain very limited social circles earlier, but now we many more people can have a stronger connection with an author.

NickGreyden I remember my frenzy over that book. I got an English copy of it, because I couldn't stand to wait for a Swedish translation. Since I'm not a native English speaker, I must say the Order of the Phoenix was probably not the best book to start properly reading English out of. I remember lots of similarly spelled words like "though", "thought" and "tough" that I just couldn't differentiate. 11 year old me didn't get past the first few chapters before the translation was finished.

I'm sure you don't remember this, but I'm the guy at the Oklahoma City book signing a few years back that had the original copy of Looking for Alaska that had been half-chewed up by a wild mongoose while I was living in Hawaii. I was spending quite a bit of my free time on the back porch reading in Kahala. I knew that we had mongoose (mongeese?) underneath the house occasionally---I used to toss them cheese puffs (sorry). Anyways, one afternoon I left the book outside. I returned an hour or so later, only to discover that the mongoose and I apparently share a taste for the works of John Green.

@CrumpArt
@CrumpArt 10 жыл бұрын
The headbands of books were traditionally used to protect the spine of the book when it was pulled from the shelf. Of course, we should all be reaching over and behind our books, pushing them out from the back, so the spine never enters the equation... ;) (Apologies. I make books and have worked in libraries. Double whammy pedant.) Anyway, you can learn interesting things about headbands and book construction here: cool.conservation-us.org/don/dt/dt1721.html

Looking for Alaska is the only book that has ever spoken to me. It is truly written so cautiously and perfectly. The one book in which I can relate to. Even if it's written about an unrealistic protagonist, she's written to like those of the average. My favorite smell is the smell of rotting wood pulp. That's what you smell when you walk into the stacks of any old library. The main reading room of The Library of Congress is surrounded by old books that no one ever reads just for that smell. Along with some progress against White Nose Syndrome in little brown bats, but if you know me, you know I REALLY, REALLY CARE about little brown bats, so this is really, really, REALLY great news. (2) Yay for P4A winners, and Double Yay for the tiered smaller awards stretching out gifts to more worthy causes; And (3) you only find out what's happening in Hank's life via Tumblr? Sounds like time to bring back Brotherhood 2.0. As long as it doesn't interfere with your writing, of course. I used to not read books at all, unless I was made to at school, and looking for Alaska was the first actual book that I finished, and it's opened a whole other world of books and stories for me. So thank you John green! x

Books for Africa! This fills my heart with joy. I used to box books for Books for Africa at their warehouse in Minnesota and the money donated and raised by my fellow nerdfighters is going to a cause TRULY close to my heart. Not only do I LOVE this cause, I met my boyfriend of three and a half years there.

We got copies of this at the bookstore where I work today and I got to inspect its details and it really is a very beautiful book. My favorite part is the endpapers, and when you showed the front ones I was shouting at my computer, "Show the back, show the back!" because I love how that quote looks in that maze in the back! That part is just extra cool. Then I realized that I was nerding out pretty hard, but then I realized that you were also nerding out pretty hard in the exact same way. I felt happy about this.

The thing on the top and bottom of the spine of a hard cover book is called a "head band" its a strip of cloth glued onto the spine to protect it from damage as the book is taken off the shelf. Back in the day it was sewn in, but not so much these days. I now have even more respect for you after learning of your apreciation of a well made book! I work in a college library mendery and it has made me realize just how cheaply a lot of books are made and how that is a real shame when it comes to the art of book binding and the longevity of individual books themselves. Thank you for having such a well thought out version of Looking for Alaska put out! I hope other books of your will get the same treatment in the future!

Congratulations! Looking for Alaska is one of my absolute favorite books, and I'm so happy to hear about the success of the Project for Awesome! I got very excited when I heard that one of the charities that won is To Write Love On Her Arms, me and a club that I am in at my high school are working with that organization, we are mostly raising awareness for the issues that it supports and raising money that will go to the organization. I thought it was a cool coincidence, and I wish you luck with the upcoming Project for Awesome!

Looking for Alaska was by far the best book I have ever read. That's what made you my favorite author. I loved it so much, I even got the middle name Alaska (im not kidding, I didn't have a middle name before). I love TFIOS, but then it got made into a movie. I was sad because I knew that once I watch the movie, the story, characters and details would ruin the image my mind created. I watched it half a year after it was released, and of course the book wasnt the same. Then Paper Towns was made into a movie, which I havent seen yet and don't plan on seeing it for a long time. Now, after hearing Looking for Alaska will be made into a movie, I couldn't hold back my tears. It has a special place in my heart; the characters are amazing and the writing is flawless. Even though I know it probably won't happen, Im hoping that somehow the movie won't be made. I saw in one of your interviews that you were debating whether or not you even wanted LfA to be made into a movie "because the story is so personal and you don't want to mess up their relationship with the book or its characters." Thats exactly what is going to happen though. Im only 13, but i know that LFA going to be my favorite book for the next 90 years. I really hope you change your mind, because that book is the only thing I have that makes me feel good about life.

So great to hear about success of Looking for Alaska and P4A! Love the design of the 10th anniversary edition and the features too. The P4A, if I do say so myself, is incredibly awesome. So great to hear that we raised more money than ever before for so many great charities! I have to admit I was a little skeptical of the new model, but I love it now and hope it comes back with either the same or different charities next year - maybe the Gates Foundation. After we raised hundreds of thousands for PIH/Save the Children, and then followed that up by raising over a million for charities of our choosing... suffice it to say the P4A only restores and reaffirms my faith in humanity. I thought this new model was going to end up putting an emphasis on John's proposal and his chosen, well-known charities. It did - but only when it was meant to on the first day. To me, what was really inspiring was when we, having already raised an impressive amount of money on the first day, came back on day two and raised even more. To follow up, Save the Children and PIH are fantastic organizations who both need and strongly deserve this money. Fantastic work. I was skeptical of John choosing charities for day one because I thought it would take away from the community aspect of the P4A, but it didn't. Rather, it enhanced it, as these charities are part of our community now as well, and have fantastic communities of their own. John, kudos to you for choosing two charities that perfectly fit in to the mold of nerdfighteria. Thank you to everyone who donated, voted, made videos, hosted the livestream, and had anything else to do with the P4A. You are all heroes and I am so proud to stand with you as a force for good. DFTBA, and to all nerdfighters with ties to France, Je suis Charlie.

Don't lament being older but be grateful that little Nerdfighters are able to exist. At the risk of sounding "wrong", I'm very happy because that "type of person" will continue on. The world needs all kinds but it certainly needs thoughtful and generous people (and more of them) regardless.

I commented on last year's video where you announced the charities chosen and you ended up sending my sister and me a wii. It's been one year and so much has changed. Everything is going better than expected. Her cancer has been gone for 9 months. She is living her life again. I am so thankful for her health, for all of the people who care enough to donate their time and money, and of course for you. Thank you.
