That 'border figure' idea is great, Justin. Can't remember that in SBP. Such an interesting character archetype too - so many of our favourite characters are those border figures - Han, Terminator, Quint. Guess it's that element of mystery. 'What drives you? Whose side are you really on - order or chaos?'

Yeah man it’s interesting. It has elements of the trickster and the threshold guardian archetypes in Joseph Campbell, but I’ve just encountered so many examples of it I kind of just made it into its own category. One thing is that I think the Hero’s Journey is mostly applicable to quest stories and so when you are dealing with a different plot archetype, like Overcoming the Monster, the figure on the threshold has a slightly different function that Campbell’s threshold guardian. Hopefully I’ll be able to address that once I finally progress my way to the quest plot type.

@@justinsmorningcoffee Mmm, when I first got into learning how stories are structured, I got hung up on the Hero's Journey. it is a useful tool, but it's Booker's book that made me realise there are idiosyncracies for different plots.

Yes, exactly. I would say that my experience is similar. I now suspect that there are different needs or functions that each type addresses: different periods in life, different elements of insight for the community, different periods of psychological development - et cetera.

I would love to see the Batman Trilogy (overcoming the monster) video. I am going to look at them closer myself.
