Inter fan based in Malta, so I follow both BPL and Serie A closely. For Inter, Onana was simply amazing. Terrific goalkeeper. However I am of the opinion that for him to excel, he needs an organised and settled defence to work with. Man United.... are the opposite of organised and settled.

I’m a Milan fan so I’ve watched quite a lot of Inter. I agree. He was so comfortable at Inter. He had lots of players around him that could play out of the back. And he didn’t have to face tons of shots all the time. He got to help in the build up and deal with the odd ends that the defense couldn’t mop up

@@theserhoratio He really isn't. He has had a small purple patch, like he frequently does, but his last 2 seasons have been shocking for the most part. Even at Inter he was good in the champions league but completely average in Serie A games. What makes it even worse is that De Gea is currently the best keeper in Serie A by a huge margin and far better than Onana was when he was in Serie A.

I'm convinced people are letting last year's Champions League performances color the way they see Onana. He's consistently saved Manchester United from their abysmal defense since last season. He's been great despite the terrible defensive performances in front of him. I'll be the first to admit that this was a howler of a game, but to say that he's a failure of a signing or a bad keeper is insane. It's important to remember that De Gea wasn't particularly good in the beginning or the end of his United career.

5:32 that "plugged in" description is SO TRUE. I played as goalkeeper for a lot of my highscool and college/University life. And YES, there are moments that you are not really into the game. Somebody shoots the ball towards the goal, and you barely reacts. It's not laziness, it's not lack of interest, you just wasn't "present" at that moment. It's like you need to grab a high voltage cable, to wake you up.

To be fair, from the body position it looked like a shot into the right corner (from the goalies perspective). If you had to take a guess, that would be a reasonable one. Only thing is, with the shot being from 20 metres out, i don't think he needed to speculate about the direction, and could have just waited a split seconds longer. It's not like this is a penalty or something.

Our greatest striker came direct from the Netherlands, RVN. The last striker that we had leading the line that won us the league came through the Dutch system, RVP. This is more a United goalkeeper thing, it takes a very special character to deal with it. De Gea dealt with it, but our last great keeper before that was... You guessed it, Dutch! Van Der Sar was a monster. Don't lower yourself to xenophobia, not nationality has succeeded at United since they last won the league.

André Onana tends to lean to one side before the shot, trying to "cheat" and gain those extra milliseconds. When it works, it looks cool, when it doesn't, it looks silly. Recently, PL forwards became increasingly wise to this tendency and started punishing him for it (see all the near-post goals he let in, because he preloads the other leg).
