My turn signal in my 2007 HHR quit cancelling, I would finish my turn and the signal would keep going. This video shows how to fix the cancel function. This cancel function fix will also work on other GM models with the same turn signal lever. (Chev Cobalt, Equinox; Pontiac Pursuit, Torrent, G5; Saturn Sky; Suzuki XL-7).
In this video I show how to turn one of the springs around the other way. The theory is that the spring, over time, gets bent the wrong way, and turning it around fixes the cancel problem.

Wow! you just saved me $40 as well. I was getting ready to place an order on Amazon and something told me there must b some sort of fix for this since I was sure it was just a switch problem and I found your video. IT FIX THE PROBLEM!!! It was a little tedious since i didn't have a regular flat head screwdriver (IKEA $8 kit) but I watched the video a few times and after slowing down, taking deep breaths and taking my time I was able to put it back together perfectly! I buy slotted-drilled rotors from an aftermarket supplier. I usually buy them from Brakeworld.com along with the pads.

You need rotors made of cast iron. I put Wagners with the black outer coating years ago. Since then I even replaced the pads again after 40,000 miles and didn't have to resurface them. Brakes smooth as silk still. Note: front end shimmy is all bad on front end suspension, never let that happen.

I have this same problem on my 2008 Pontiac Torrent, same part number switch (looking at Rock Auto - if you click on the blue part number it pops up a list of other vehicles which use the same part number.) The Torrent is a little easier because you don't need to remove the dash trim first, just three column pieces (the bottom two come off together.) I flipped the spring but that didn't fix mine. I took off the next black piece inside the switch and the white piece below it (not the one you removed and re-installed) had a tab that was broken off. Ordered a new part from AAP and the wife is picking it up now. Thanks for the video... it inspired me to give it a try and it was easier than I thought. (My wife did most of the work because I'm in a sling due to rotator cuff surgery.)

Flipping the spring didn't help me either, went to Pick n pull & got the last one there that would work. Came off a Cobalt, & cost $11.

Tried the the fix but it didn't work. Problem must be elsewhere in switch. Ordered a new OEM switch on Amazon for 31 dollars including shipping.

I replaced the switch assembly since they are not expensive. Old switch would not latch for left hand turns. On RH turns it would latch but not auto cancel. So..now both sides latch but no auto cancel for either direction. Any ideas?

Gr8 vid Thx. I only wanted to clean the sticky indicators as they had no contact unless I gently lifted or depressed lever for them to work. Yes, it was so annoying to manually always hold the lever to indicate. As back yard mechanic I sprayed WD inside thinking to clean any dust etc. Now my High Beams stay on all the time thus I removed the 2 fuses. Now I have no high beams. I guess I shunted the board and need to blow compressed air to remove residual liquid. Lets hope this works. Any tips pls and thx.

I have a 2008 Sky and all of a sudden the right signal won't cancel and I have to hold the left one to get it to stay on. I ordered a switch but the removal looks different than on your HHR. If the tabs on the wheel are broken I would have to remove the steering whee

question for you, my 2008 cobalt has just the opposite problem it doesn't stay on in fact if you want to use your turn signal you have to hold it down or else it automatically turns off any ideas? thanks good video

You could probably just replace the entire turn signal switch instead of doing this fix. It's a $45 part, and shouldn't take a terribly long time to do the swap yourself.

The round plastic ring that fits into the steering column came off of mine today. Is there a way to put that back on? I messed with it a little but I figure that something inside the swtich broke. It seems to turn off and on after messing with it a little. it just moves up and down the turn signal arm and leaves a hole in my steering assembly. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing, but it’s not an absolute fix. Mine had a tab broke off the white plastic part under that spring plate. The tab that broke of is meant to grab a small coil spring, which centers the white plate. Bummer... I was hoping for a cheap fix.

I just took mine apart and spring was not the problem. there a white plastic under the piece with springs that dry rotten and break off. It a small piece that go around a big spring. So if you shake it and you hear something inside, that problem.

+Onaspark Thank you for a great video. I also benefited from the "removal" video you posted. In the Cobalt it's little tight, I had to force the switch out (but didn't break anything). I did flip the spring (actually did it twice already), but it still doesn't cancel 100% of the time. I had a bad clockspring, but since replaced. I can hear faint clicking/cracking somewhere in the steering wheel when I turn the wheel. Would it still be the switch? I would like to be sure before buying a new switch entirely. Thank you!

+Richard Navratil After taking mine apart, I am almost certain that yours is the switch also. I heard the same clicking on mine when it didn't work. There are some notches on the steering wheel that push on the white piece in the video and that is what cancels the turn signal and makes the clicking sound. You can see the notches after you remove the switch and turn the wheel.

+Richard Navratil If you pull your switch and look into the pocket where the switch was, you can see the notches as you turn the wheel. Highly unlikely they are broken. If you read my post above, my problem was a small tab on a different white piece that was broken off. I took off the cover and the black and white pieces shown in the video. Then I took off the next black piece under the previous pieces. The white piece under that is what is broken. You might try doing tjis on yours. Mine works perfectly now. Cancels fine and no unexpected noises. After replacing mine and understanding how it works (I'm an automotive engineer) I say 95% probability replacing the switch will fix yours.

Jason Ricci I think it is possible to get alignment off. There is something in there that trips the turn signal lever to go off.

I forgot to mention that turning left, the lever will not lock: you have to hold it down to signal thru the turn.

I tried this but..... Any way..... I failed!!! When I reinstalled and ;lugged in the connectors the blue high beam light in the dash lit up and the high beams were on. Couldn't turn them off unless I unplugged it. Can this be fixed? And yes I disassymbled it completely, Obviously I didn't get it back together right.....

It's because of issues like this that I will never buy another Chevy. I've had nothing but trouble with my 2010 cobalt. And only 27k miles on it after 6 years of ownership. I've had electrical issues that almost made the car stall out when idling, a bad A/C, tires that wouldn't hold air because of the corrosion on the alloy wheels, the above issue with the turn signal, and the bushings went out this year. That's just what I recall off the top of my head.

I'm sorry to hear that you have had so many problems. Electrical issues seem to be the hardest to solve. My daughter is now driving the 06 HHR in the video and she loves it. My wife has an 11 that has had no issues outside of normal wear like brakes. I drive an 03 Trailblazer that needs a/c work, but I plan on fixing it myself. I like the GM cars for that very reason. I can fix most problems myself and the parts are cheap.

Good video! To bad this wasn't the problem with my switch. The white part under the plate with the two springs was broken on mine. There really isn't a fix for it, have to just buy a new one. Heres the part on Amazon. amzn.com/B004940ZSK It's about 20 bucks cheaper than going to the dealership.
