What causes hallucinations when someone is sleep deprived, is that they are "dreaming" or entering REM while still awake, which means if they are incapable of REM then they probably wouldn't be having hallucinations. Just my thoughts. It was a good episode though.

The only thing dragging this episode down are the bad effects of Troi's nightmares. If they had her running down the empty corridors, following to two moons on the commpanels, that woulda been more effective.

Her nightmares are literally near the heart of the plot. And what you described isn’t what ‘dragging’ means. The only issue I personally have is her acting, but I try to take it with a grain of a salt as I was sure she just wasn’t used to being in the middle of a green screen like that

Sure, the effects/green screen were kind of hokey, I can see that they aged poorly. But again, this was the 90s. As a kid during that period, this episode was brilliantly terrifying

@@teleportedbreadfor3days That's what I'm saying. By strapping her up on a wire in front of a green screen, they sacrificed pathos and tone for unneeded spectacle when a simpler approach to her nightmares could have been more effective, and continued the episode's tone of unease and creepiness, rather than risk unintended comedy at a clear shot of her trying to act natural while suspended from a wire in front of a green wall. Having seen people respond to those scenes upon a first watch with chuckles rather than mounting dread is why I say the nightmares, as they are, dragged the episode down, because they broke the intended tone of the episode. Everything else about the episode is great, suitably creepy and unsettling. Those scenes, in my and others opinion, aren't.
