Yes, it's a real issue for a couple of islands - Eday in particular - getting people who live on the island and can find time for the full training. The guy you see on Papa Westray is a cow farmer, by the way. What they don't do is provide a full ATC service, though they do talk by radio to the pilot to confirm the runway is clear. (The things you learn on a Papay pub night!)
@C2K777
@C2K777 2 жыл бұрын
@Spoonmeat I actually know someone who used to to the same role at a different small airport and yes they do. They are essentially classified as 'Retained Firefighters' which no doubt you'll understand as a title. They have to undergo the full training that any 'Airport Firefighter' has to undergo and the standard aircraft the location handles isn't the limit of their training as they have to be competent to deal with any type of aircraft that may user the airport in an emergency situation. For up there this would include jet aircraft as whilst it would be an absolute last resort the airfields are still within the operating area of QRF fighters. Obviously no 777 is ever gonna use it in an emergency due to length and surface but fighters could manage it at a push due to their advanced breaking ability and landing gear strength being designed for potential 'off field' landings.

Super video! Forget about those business class comparisons between this airline and that (Yawn yawn yawn :-) - how many of us are ever going to use them). These quirky trips are what defines you and are the most interesting. As well as being shorter that the length of Edinburgh's runway, this short flight is a lot shorter than a circuit of even the smallest airfield! Two questions: 1. how do you find these quirky flights and 2. How many times did you bang your head in that small Islander cabin??

@@tommyovesen that's only if you look at incidents/mile. If you compare incidents/trip, its safer to be on the road. @@goytabr Well my apologies to Sam, but let's be honest his flights and videos are not realistic of 90 percent of the worlds travelers. I feel fortunate that I am at a place in life I can book a seat in Premium economy or sometimes business class but he seems to place great emphasis on the worlds more luxurious airlines and luxury accommodations and the most frequently used wide body planes. It is obvious he is being paid or given special treatment by airlines to put a happy face on travel. That is why I enjoy the content of people like Noel Philips and Josh Cahill that show the good and the bad and give honest assessments trying to improve the industry for all travelers, not just FIrst class emirates passengers. I have nothing against Sam personally I just don't enjoy his videos that I consider more of a commercial for certain airlines than a true aviation travel channel. Warm regards and I sincerely hope you have a wonderful day and all safe travels for you in the future.

@@rabtorb2, yes, I agree with your opinion and that of most avgeeks: Sam makes more "infomercials" than real video (though I do like his videos when he goes off the beaten track, like flying those rare old birds of Iran, or spotting at hardcore airports like Paro). I just wanted to comment that he did try to make this flight a couple of years ago. Oh no, I missed you visiting! Thanks for showing off our beautiful islands. Why not hire a plane from the airfield on Lamb Holm and fly the shortest flight yourself for the other channel?! The paperwork is a ballache but you CAN do it, I asked the Papa Westray airfield manager. If you stay one or more nights on Papa Westray instead, the price is just £21/person return (a single is £18, day return is £36)! The hostel there is brilliant - self-catering but more like a hotel otherwise, with the island shop next door to get food and beer. Bit gutted you weren't on Westray for Jack's Chippy, the Wednesday and Saturday-only fish and chip shop run from the fish processing plant - so good, coastguard choppers have been known to call in en route back to Sumbrough. Random fact: we have 70 public loos in a county with 22,000 people, they're everywhere! Pierrowall RBS is shut, but it used to be one day a week, with a cashier flying in - the next day they'd be on another island. Also, Westray has 3 churches in current use - that was the smallest - but Orkney isn't like the Western Isles for religiosity, we're much more chilled.

I've found the place of the Twatt sign on Google Maps (street level available showing exactly Noel's position in the video), but finding it was no big deal because the sign is actually listed on Google as a tourist attraction! 😂 It's far north on Mainland island, near the village of Abune-the-Hill (so apparently Twatt has a nearby mound... 😂). Of course, Twatt is also a village of about half a dozen very scattered houses, a farm, a church, and a monument to a military airfield that apparently once existed there.

that's unreal Noel. You know, it's trips like that which can need the most attention to the maintenance of the aircraft. Aircraft are just not built to operate that way. It's those type of sitations that put excessive stress on the airframe. Pressures of fluids, flight deck TIMING equipment. i have seen disasters from planes operating in similar situations on strange flights..... ...........Granted, they were flying 20 to 40 trips per day though......for 10 years Noel, thanks for sharing the shortest flight on earth which is a registered flight. Mad You have great courage. Vin

Thankyou Noel. A very nice introduction to the shortest flight in the world, with your commentary, and personal thoughts. That village on the smaller island has a couple of football pitches that could be occupied at the same time I noticed. So the local lads can keep occupied. I dare say there'd be a golf club there too, with Scotland being the home of golf. I was hoping you'd keep your camera rolling as you enjoyed your dinner at the hotel. You chose not too, so there could be a message in that. But so good to see how lovely the Orkneys are from the air too!

In Montana we always had the Northwest Airlines “milk run” Billings-Bozeman-Helena-Great Falls-Missoula-Spokane, Washington. The flight from Bozeman to Helena is about 75 miles. Before Northwest merged with Delta. They would do the whole bunch of airports, and the plane was a Boeing 727-200! That meant that the hop between Bozeman and Helena was about the shortest full size jet airliner flight on earth! Unfortunately they don’t do the milk run any more. It was a great trip!
