Heard in every episode: "I need to run to the marine store again..." One thing that came to mind for me- I would put some dielectric grease in the unused connectors and cover them with electrical tape. I would hate to find that you want to use them at some point in the future and they are corroded from being exposed.

Great job again Teal, the other advantage of a tapered splice that you didn't cover is that not only does it mean you don't get a bunch of connectors creating an ugly knob in your wiring harness but it also helps mitigate mechanical stress that is inherent when adding a solid joint to a flexible wire. The surrounding wires to each join help stabilize that join when you finally tape them back into a harness. Phillip Ivey... Teal didn't make a straight cut to the wiring loom, each wire was cut a couple of inches from the last cut, thus staggering the joins. The loom additions were all the same length, so when Teal made the joins on the cable end of the addition, they are staggered. When he did the joins to the connector end of the additions, they match with the original staggered cut he made in the loom.

I like someone with OCD like myself. The only thing I would have done different is soldering the connections instead of butt connectors then silicon grease with shrink tubing of at least six inches, three inches on each side of the connectors and at sea they will never fail. I have been sailing world wide for over forty years and have seen butt connection failures because of corrosion without silicon grease and soldering. You have an acute attention to detail, I salute your excellent efforts.

Another suggestion, I am a big fan of dielectric grease around ANY electrical connection especially in a salt rich environment. It is not for me to tell you how to make your connections uninvited, but after a couple of decades of dealing with electrics and electronics in a marine environment, I have found that corrosion will find its way most anywhere, and the more you guard against it, the better. I would fill all connectors with dielectric grease before closing/crimping them, and wrap them securely 2 to 3 inches either side (if possible) with PVC tape after. Any unused connectors like you found in your new bridles, I would fill and wrap them as well, cheap insurance. Have only just recently discovered your channel, you are doing good work, keep it up.

This is just a suggestion but I was a navy submariner and a merchant marine chief engineer and any time we had to connect components with plugs even water proof/resistant types we always used dielectric grease it really helps to prevent corrosion of the connectors especially in a salt water environment, just a suggestion, keep up the great work the boat is looking great

Hey Teal of the past. I don't want to sound like one of those " Safety Sallies " ( I think Safety Comes Third ) but shouldn't that propane tank be in some kind of cradle to keep it from banging around in there during rough sea?

Hi Teal, I curious about the wire harness. I understand the staggered approach and cannot argue the merits of the plan. I am just also curious about your thoughts on creating a jumper harness with the proper plugs to extend the harness the necessary length. I have done this with automobiles , would there be any negatives in a marine environment?
@lkm54626 жыл бұрын
A couple questions . Is the gas bottle secured? Wouldn’t the area along the birth ( where the cables were run) be a great storage area if you had an exterior hatchway . Maybe long enough for two shelves for paddle boards? Nice vid
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
The gas bottle is not secured. We will be doing a considerable amount of work in the propane locker before we leave the dock. We will be adding multiple exterior hatches along that run for access and light storage. The problem I have with having to much storage is that you tend to fill it. It's real easy to load up a cruising multihull and push your waterline creating poor performance and unsafe conditions. With that being said, yes, we will still use this area for additional storage but be cautious when provisioning. Thanks for the questions.
@hammershigh5 жыл бұрын
You should own a soldering iron and some shrink tube. Doesn't add to the thickness of the wire.

Have to warn you - no nice way of saying this The connections on your harness extensions WILL give you problems Even though it has heatshrink over the connections, sea air will get in there, as sure you will know that sea air will get in everywhere The right way of doing those wire joints, is solder every connection and heatshrink Yes the soldering is a lot of extra work, however well worth the extra effort Agree with the way that you have stagered the joint Hope this is recieved in the good spirit in witch it is meant
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
I agree that solder makes a great connection but I also think that modern marine connectors, used with the right crimping tools, can be a reliable alternative. I do have a twenty year history using these connectors with only 1 failure (which was quickly fixed in a matter of minutes) so I feel very comfortable with my install. Of course I receive any suggestions with good spirits..I learn new things every day and welcome constructive insight.
