Does Mulan's sexuality really have such a huge impact on her character? Are people really defined by who they fall in love with? Romance isn't the centre of life and it certainly wasn't the centre of Mulan. It was a movie about a woman becoming a warrior to save her family, the fact that she fell in love with Shang was just one aspect of the plot. Why did no one have a problem when Belle became a member of a provincial royal family? I don't get why everyone is shocked that this happened. I felt the entire Mulan falling for Aurora thing was actually implied rather heavily in the mid-season finale of last year when she put Aurora's heart back in her chest. As for true love's kiss working to wake her... well if you think about it in the context of that first episode they were in it could be because that was the only love that she had ever known. I'm not saying OUaT would actually do it, but saying that you can have more than one soulmate would be an interesting twist on things. It was also implied after the mid-season finale and even before that there would be a gay or lesbian relationship. I think they made it happen like this only because Jamie Chung now has her own show.

I feel the same way. Either their storyline in season two was paving the way for this moment, or the writers really have no idea how much subtext they inject into every scene. It was also confirmed in 3x03 that a person can have more than one true love (Daniel and Robin Hood for Regina, and probably Henry in a non-romantic way), so it seems perfectly reasonable that Aurora could have two true loves, Phillip and Mulan.

You're forgetting that when Mulan put Aurora's heart back into her chest, Aurora's first thought was of Philip, and what Cora told her about a wraith simply taking a person's soul without destroying it. Aurora's first impulse was to tell Mulan that it would be possible to put Philip's soul back in his body to bring him back to life, which shows you who exactly Aurora's heart was with. It seems like the writers were indecisive about what to do with Mulan, first implying that she was in love with Philip, and then that she was in love with Aurora. But realistically they were really never going to break up the Sleeping Beauty couple, especially when they're about to have a child.

Once upon a time, I remember me and my friends saw the chemistry between Mulan and Aurora. We were LGBTQ and young but loved romance stories. When we saw Mulan save Aurora by bringing back her heart, we couldn’t help ourselves. We created a community on Tumblr, a big ship dedicated to both Mulan and Aurora, and we called it Sleeping Warrior. We had a great time sharing fanfics, fanart, and even head canons, and we had wondered fervently what would happen next season. We even had Sleeping Warrior Week to celebrate just how great it would have been to see these two admit their love for another. Back then, things were fun and even easier. Then finally, Season 3 rolled around and we saw this episode. That was when everything fell apart. My friends moved on to better things, some had even chosen to go back to real life, and I was stuck, just mourning the loss of what could have been. I was young at the time, so I didn’t know what to do or what I wanted. But with no other choice, I too eventually moved on, and then the rest was history. Still, I cherish the moments we all shared. Even if it was just from shipping two fictional characters. I still think they deserved to be together, and I think the storywriting didn’t do them justice, but it is what it is. At least I know that in another world, in a time and in a place, in some of the ideas and thoughts that a couple of shippers came up with once upon a time, I have no doubt that they lived happily ever after. Even if it didn’t exist here. (Also, if you or anyone else is curious about a good fanfic with these two, I highly recommend “Forgotten Adventures in a Disenchanted Land” by badgersprite. It’s incredibly well written, and gives these two a very happy ending.)

My sister and I (also both queer, though we were both already adults when OUAT began) loved Sleeping Warrior, too! I remember when that episode aired when Mulan gave her back her heart, and we were like "is there something there?" And then this episode confirmed that there WAS which was amazing, but also so sad how it happened because Mulan deserved happiness! I loved the fact that Mulan likes girls, because for a once, there is a Disney character many of us can relate too. I think it shows that true love can happen between any person, and I love this idea. It is not because she can fight or whatever. She just found a girl worth fighting for, and yet, she is ready to let that person go so that she can be happy with Philip. If that isn't true, selfless love. Aurora's love for Phillip isn't just going to shut itself off just because Mulan now has feelings for her. That's not really the way it works. In the real world, most straight women don't just dump their husbands/boyfriends and fathers of their children the moment another woman shows romantic interest in them. We know that Aurora loves Phillip because she was willing to kill Snow White for him, blaming her for Phillip losing his soul to a Wraith. We also know that if Aurora didn't love Phillip he would never have been able to awaken her from her eternal sleep with true love's kiss, just like Charming did with Snow. You can't just change the rules. When Mulan gave Aurora her heart back after retrieving it from Hook, Aurora's first thought was not to fall into Mulan's arms, it was of Phillip, and how Cora told her that a soul taken by a Wraith is not destroyed, simply taken "elsewhere." She then resolved to return Phillip's soul to his body, which showed exaclty who Aurora's heart was with. Everyone deserves a happy ending, and Phillip and Aurora are about to have theirs now that they are expecting a child. There's pretty much no way to put Aurora and Mulan together without it breaking Phillip's heart in that situation, and so far, Aurora has shown no signs of returning Mulan's feelings. It's been portrayed as one-sided so far. Mulan needs to find her happy ending elsewhere.

If the writers don't pursue this storyline, I don't think it will have anything to do with Disney thinking it will reflect badly on itself. I think it will have more to do with three things: 1. Aurora is in love with Phillip. Him awakening her from her eternal sleep with true love's kiss proves that. 2. Aurora is pregnant will Phillip's child and looks to be very happy about that. 3. Aurora hasn't been shown to be at all bisexual or returning Mulan's feelings. And there hasn't been much on this storyline since the third episode.

Well, I don't think that is the message. I think the sad thing about love is that the person always doesn't have to love you back. It's a very realistic situation that Mulan is in. I'm gay and I loved my best friend who was straight for a while, but I had to face that he would never love me in the same way. This makes me like Mulan more and makes her stronger than the rest...plus I ship her and Robin Hood.

i really doubt that's the message they were trying to send. its not like there aren't any straight couples that didn't get a happy ending. like neal/bealfire, he's in love with emma and now it looks like she's falling in love with hook. and rumpelstiltskin and cora. i'm sure she will find love later on in the show and get a happy ending.

Aurora is really annoys the hell outta me, not quite sure why. she just does. And i don't mind Mulan being lesbian. It doesn't change her character/ who she is. She's still my fav Disney character right before Aladdin. Mulan is a strong person, she was willing to risk execution to keep her father alive. Mulan also kept her feelings about Shang in check. Knowing how important is was for her to keep her identity a secret.

The Disney one is based on a fairy tale that is even older than Cinderella and Snow White, and Phillip and Aurora were my first childhood ship growing up. They had the most well developed romance because they both fell in love with each other for who they are, without even knowing their real identities, that Phillip was a prince and Aurora was a princess. That made their love more real. Cinderella's prince fell in love with an illusion, and Snow White didn't even meet her prince until the end.

We grew up with these, like you said, iconic stories and while I love them, I always wanted to go out there and find my princess (not prince); maybe if there had been a story like that; I would have figured myself out way before my mid-20s. guys, Mulan can be bisexual. You never know. Maybe she was in love with prince Phillip but she just fell out of love and into Aurora. Now, based on these comments. Mulan just fell for the wrong person. She knew that Aurora was deeply in love with Phillip. I can understand why she could think a different way because of Aurora's body type. Zelena turned Aurora and Phillip into flying monkeys. We later see Aurora in human form again with Phillip Jr, but her prince is never seen again. There’s no good reason (aside from, like, actor availability) that Mulan couldn’t have found Aurora in Storybrooke and lived happily ever after as a little family. This show is bursting with characters so it was only natural they’s lose track of some of them, but why did it have to be the ones I liked?

I didn't get why they had Mulan chasing after two people who were already in a relationship and then kept switching her traveling companions. Mulan's story was never her own in OUAT which is one of the things that I have to say is very disappointing. Now some people may have liked the movie Brave(I did not) and with the dark swan storyline Merida was needed and she needed to take back her father's throne and save her brothers which is nice...but Mulan never got an actual backstory, even if there wasn't a shang from the mulan movie, I didn't understand what the point was to have her have feelings for a Prince who already found his true love and obviously wasn't going to let her go and vice versa. They could have at least have chosen a man or woman(prince/princess or not), they could have been a major fairy tale character or a minor one. I really just wanted to see how Mulan's story aligned within the others, she came from China(I'm guessing the enchanted forest had a similar or alike map as the real one...I don't know). Mulan's character was more like a filler for a knight or warrior, I wanted to see her ride off and win the war at least. Excuse my rant..

I get scheduling could have been a conflict or maybe they didn't want to return. But I did wonder about that fairy that grumpy was in love with. Maybe a more in depth exploration of the fairies themselves would have been good too. Who is the blue fairy, how did she become head of the fairies too.
