Hi! I like your Alien and Aliens reactions very much! It's so much fun watching you looking that movies! You did it really great! In the scene in Alien when the destroyed Ash lies on the table you say that you really can see the difference between the "mask" and than when you see Ash/Ian Holm speaking. You have right, there is a big difference, but like you sayed it's from '79! Now everyone has HD or 4K/Ultra 4K television but in this year and the years after most people had only an antenne with an analog signal, i looked that movie in 1990 on TV and you couldn't see a big difference, if you don't looked for this you don't realise it. But now with the HD TV's you can see the difference very good. But they did an really great job! I love the Alien movies, that's my favorite Horror/Sci Fi movies! I saw it the first time with 11 1/2 years and i was scared to death! I had many nights with nightmares about that and i woke up wet! But later i began love that movies, after i saw Aliens in 1996, i think with around 16 years, i was a big Aliens fan from the first moment. I hope you look Alien 3! I know, some people say don't look it, but if you want to know if you like a movie or not you always must look it by your own. Maybe you don't like it, if that's the case it's ok, but Alien 3 is part of the trilogy and Ripleys story. If you want to know if there is a happy end for Hicks, Newt and Ripley you must look it. Alien 3 isn't my favorite, that's the first 2 films and specially the 1st one but i also like Alien 3. There are some really great scenes in it and i like the story. I hope you look it. I saw ALIEN on May 26th 1979 on a Saturday in a theatre in downtown Chicago and it was packed! People were screaming and jumping out of their seats! It was one of the best times that I had at the cinema...and then I saw ALIENS!

My uncle also saw ALIEN in the end of 1979 .. it was in Hungary, and Hungary made a different title for the movie. Hungary called it : ''The eigth passenger is the death'' .. My uncle was 20 years old back then, and he loved that movie so much , when he first saw it, that he went to saw the movie 8 times (like the title suggested). It was the first and only movie in his life, he saw 8 times in the theatre. I never had the chance to see it in the theatres, because of my age. But, when i first saw it (i was around 10-11 years old) there was never a movie which end thrilled me so much like the end of this movie. Its still my favorite movie... and not only that... in my opinion it portrays a possible future in the most realistic way - also the vastness of space... no ''federation'' ... no ''galactic empire'' where you push a button, and you are in a new solar system in no time... No communication with home , which could give the illusion that the distances are small. In this movie the distances feel like a hell of ''nothing'' ... dark... cold .. without any empathy for life. You are on your own... nobody can help you .. you even cant call for help or explain your situation... there is no comfort in this dark vastness... Never again a science fiction could give me that feelings about (vast empty ) space.

in 1979, for the preview of the movie, all we got was an image of the egg with a crack in it and eerie green light coming from it as the title was being spelled out like at the beginning of the movie, and this line, "In space, no one can hear you scream..."

I watched a whole bunch of "first time viewing" reactions to Alien now. The movie apparently hasn't lost a bit of it's efficiency. The scary scenes are still scary for new viewers, the twists are still surprising as fudge and the ship and it's crew still seem... real. Hence it's a classic. :) And the creature design by Giger... Man, back then that was really special, nobody had seen such a beast on screen before, it truly seemed "Alien", even though, in the end, it was just a guy in a suit. And Ripley... Yah, no wonder she became such an icon over the years. It's not that there hadn't been other competent and/or tough women depicted in movies before, of course if you ignore all the roles for women that were just eye candy or women in distress to be saved, especially in the fantastic genres fantasy/scifi/horror... Those genre's for a long time, like adventure movies too, were playing in a "men's world". The year before Alien, Princess Leia started as your classic captive princess we know from 100 faery tales - but after Luke and Han get her out of the cell she pretty much immediately takes command of the group, subverting the viewer's expectations. And now Ripley. What I like about the way she's written and played by Weaver is that while she's tough when poop hits the fan she's not your typical "tough chick" character like they especially often turned up in the 80s. Those were usually over the top masculine or on the contrary, wearing overly sexy costumes that are completely unpractical for their action roles. Which shows that following Leia and Ripley others wanted to make movies with strong women too, but not *really* getting it. That often happens in movies to this day, I feel.

The funny thing about those fairy tales is that it's only the modern impression of them that has the princess as a helpless damsel. I grew up on folktales and it's the *norm* for the captive princess to start ordering the hero around as soon as he shows up. She probably could have escaped on her own, but she wanted someone to carry all the treasure back to her kingdom for her.

That scene where the alien explodes from his chest was kept from the actors. It’s why their response is so genuine. Crazy! Edit: see below. Actors knew alien was exploding from chest. Just not how, or gory details. Those reactions are still awesome and genuine and crazy.

To the reactor: You will most likely see the OFT REPEATED claim that the actors had no idea what would happen during the chestburter scene. This is patent lie. As Sigourney says on the excellent quadrilogy making of documentary, they had all read the script so of course knew what would happen. Plus they could clearly see John Hurt on a slant board. It was the sheer literal EXPLOSIVE nature of the execution of the scene that took them all (particular Veronica Cartwright who slipped on the blood and fell over) by surprise. If I had a dollar for every time some clueless noob claims they had no idea, I'd be a rich man!

My husband worked at the drive in when this movie came out. He got the puzzle and board game. He was even able to keep the poster that was in the lobby. A coworker got the face hugger mask. He worked there from 1976 to 1980. He got to see a bunch of good first run movies. Besides this Star Wars and several others.

This isn't the Director's Cut. Ridley Scott has gone on record saying the Theatrical Cut is his director's cut (the very rare instance where that's the case). This is the Extended Version, which is kind of a rebuilt version of the mixing cut, which is why the sound and music are still okay on it, but those scenes were cut for the Theatrical because Scott didn't want them there.

The latex shrank on set and they didn't have time to go back and reshoot it because they were reaching the end of their production budget. The whole film was only $8.4 million in 1979 dollars, but that was for everything, including publicity, so they had no time to redo stuff. That cut is probably the best they could do with what they had in the editing bay.

It's great that you're watching so many classics and sharing it with everyone, it brings hope in this horrible year. I watch a lot of reactors on youtube and I always ask: can you do animated movies? I know you watched Frozen 2, but there are so much great animated movies out there and it's sad that people ignore them cause they think all animated movies are just for kids. If you want an example: try The Secret of NIMH (1982) or Land Before Time (1988), watch either and tell me they're just for kids.

Here's some fun info about Alien: Jerry Goldsmith had his music replaced during the end credits by Howard Hanson's 1930 track "Sinfonia No 2 The Romantic". Both Goldsmith and Hanson were angry about this. Goldsmith because his music was replaced by what had been a temporary music track during editing and Hanson because his music was used without permission. When Kane, Dallas and Lambert are walking away from the Nostromo the landing legs were full sized props built in studio. Also small stick figures were used when they're walking across the landscape. Inside the Alien Derelict children were used to increase the size of the dead Space Jockey. At the 1979 premiere for Alien various props (Space Jockey, eggs, Nostromo model, set pieces) were displayed. The large Space Jockey prop was destroyed when someone carelessly placed a lit cigarette on it and vandals set fire to some of the other props. The Nostromo model (11 feet long) was kept for years outside covered only by a tarp. It recently underwent a massive restoration effort.

IN the day when kids had few movies to go to... my momma took me to this one at age 10. I thought it was so cool! I watched it over and over again as soon as home video came out in say 1980. (We had never heard of home video at this time.) I like watching these young ones watching these. It's like watching my kids!

I was too young to go see Alien in the theater when it came out (8 years old), but I eventually read the book when I was 11. I only had my imagination from the book to tell me what the alien looked like and it was SO scary! That was one hell of a story! Especially when the baby busted out of Kane'e chest! The book said it was "trailing bits of Kane." Trailing BITS! I don't remember how old I was when I finally saw the movie. Maybe 14. I enjoyed watching your reaction to something I've known for so long.😃

I've seen the white synthetic blood being used for robots or androids. Blood is red for most living things because of the hemoglobin in it. But the artificial blood doesn't need that, and it's more of a coolant or fluid used for machines and the complex system that powers the androids.

Fun Fact: that wasn't in the original script. That was added by Walter Hill & David Giler after they bought the movie from Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett. It's the only thing from that version they kept because Hill & Giler's version were terrible.

The alien and the setting were designed by HR Giger, a favorite artist of mine. Interesting trivia, the ruins in Prometheus was the Harkonen Palace from Jodorowsky's Dune.

I'll explain for those who never seen it. The face hugger comes out if the pod if a living creature is near. It attaches to the face, n while feeding air into the person it inserts a tube down a throat or nose which places what it was carrying into the human. I.E. the chest burster which could also come from the stomach. It grows into a xenomorph n well, yeah. There you go. Your welcome ✌️

True story, during the ‘chestburster’ scene, the actors had NO IDEA what was about to happen outside of the rough outline given to them in the script. Veronica Cartwright lost it because she found herself shot dead in the face with a fake blood sprayer. Still one of the most amazing scenes in film history. Shot with completely practical effects and an absolutely real reaction from the cast.

Saw this in the theater when it first came out. The audience was just stunned. I just love an alarm system that has strobe lights and 115 decibel alarms. That helps everyone think more clearly in an emergency, don't it?

Heh, everybody always asks what the white milky liquid is in the Alien universe's robots. I always thought it was akin to mill finish, which acts as a coolant for manufacturing machines (a sort of robot). This substance is a white watery liquid, so that was always what I figured

I saw this film on the now defunct UPN network 20 years ago, a week before my birthday, and it scared the hell out of me and my family! Lol! This film won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1980.

Hey, Vanessa! This is one of the greatest horror films of all time! You saw the Director's Cut which has the unnecessary cocooning scene and pacing issues. I prefer the Theatrical Cut. Director Ridley Scott kept the entire cast in the dark about the famous CHESTBURSTING scene except for John Hurt. Their reactions were absolutely genuine and mirrored the audience's response! Squeamish Veronica Cartwright got sprayed by fake blood and fell over backward. They only filmed the scene twice. It remains one of the most ICONIC IN CINEMA HISTORY! The PACING is deliberately slow at the beginning to acquaint the audience with the ship's geography, to demonstrate authentic-looking space travel and maneuvers, to familiarize the audience with the crew, to establish the threat posed by the creature and to generate suspense with the mystery of the derelict craft. There's a lot of rich character humor and foreshadowing in those crew interaction scenes as well as a subtext about this future society being a corporate dystopia. "Alien" is set in the year 2122. The Swiss artist, H.R. Giger, who designed the xenomorph tapped into insectoid and reptilian features that evoke primal fear. His artwork is very bizarre, erotic and has a distinctive look called Giger-esque. The final product is an iconic movie monster that is pure NIGHTMARE FUEL! The creature's life-cycle and biology is explored throughout the series. By the way, the alien's retractable inner jaw is found in nature in a deep-sea fish! THE WEYLAND-YUTANI COMPANY is an international conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar travel and terra-forming. They have a stake in every colony world and are basically the 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th- to 19th-centuries. They are a ruthless corporation looking to exploit or weaponize the xenomorph for profit regardless of the negative consequences. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of all the Alien movies. In the "AvP" films, you actually meet the company founders before their merger, Mr. Weyland and Ms. Yutani. This crew is not a group of explorers, scientists or colonists. They're just SPACE TRUCKERS hauling rocks. This was a First Contact situation they were wholly unqualified for. Hence, all the bumbling and bad judgment calls. Their chief concerns were company policy and pay inequity. Ripley was the only one with the willingness to make difficult command decisions that would have saved all their lives except for Kane's had she not been undermined by Ash. Of course, Ash was privy to a secret corporate mandate. Like most Captains, Dallas had an inherently CALM DEMEANOR. You do not want your leader freaking out in an emergency! It was also a defense mechanism. By minimizing the situation, it prevents both him and the crew from panicking. It's a 'steady does it' philosophy. You can tell he's very worried because he seeks counsel from Mother. He also acknowledges his culpability for the predicament by preventing Ripley from volunteering to go into the shafts and by shouldering that burden himself. The plan was to block off passages as he went in order to flush it out into the airlock with fire so it could be ejected into space. He accepted this task not even knowing if fire would be effective! His last act is a rather valiant gesture and I always feel bad for him despite his initial missteps. Parker is MY FAVORITE supporting character! Yaphet Kotto played him to the hilt! He's the blue collar EVERYMAN who just cares about payday and who enjoys deliberately antagonizing his superiors but ends up sacrificing himself for a fellow employee. He's also the only one who made a move on the chestburster before being stopped by Ash! Some viewers strongly believe the alien raped Lambert! This is nonsense. The PREHENSILE TAIL probably drew her closer to itself so it could mouth-punch her with the retractable jaw. Drones incapacitate victims for hosting embryos or for food. Those viewers aren't mistaken for perceiving phallic eroticism, though, as that was Scott's intent. The giant elephant-headed alien pilot of the derelict spacecraft is one of the GREAT MYSTERIES of the franchise. Was he a zoologist, a bio-warfare specialist, an exterminator, a trader in exotic organisms, a waste disposal tech or a trucker like Ripley's crew? No one knows. The prequels attempted to unsatisfyingly answer the question claiming his species designed the alien. As you later see in the prequel "Prometheus", the elephant head is just a helmet and the giant space jockey is actually humanoid in appearance. You also see a functioning version of the derelict craft in "Prometheus". Sigourney Weaver became a FEMINIST ICON because of this movie. Ripley is one in a long line of strong female characters that have been showcased in sci-fi and fantasy dating back to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars in 1911! There's not a single man I know who wouldn't follow Ripley into hell. The ALIEN and PREDATOR franchises are intertwined. fun job. Yes there are several others, including relations with other flicks. the 2 nd is near equal the first, some like it better. I like Prometheus ( the first film in the story but near last in production time ) , others don't. lots of great films in the 15 years from 1969 -1985 or so including Ghostbusters, Chinatown, Exorcist, Butch Cassidy , Cuckoos Nest

Jones is underrated. He's more than just a cat. Animals sense things that humans can't. How did Jones get into a locker and close the door? Obviously, he encountered the alien and was so freaking scared he pawed the door shut. Ripley has a daughter on Earth. Jones also serves as a surrogate child. I understand not liking cats because of allergy. They can be the silliest creatures to watch. I saw a print cartoon once, can't find it online, but it is nine panels each showing what a cat does throughout the day. Any people in the panels are represented from their knees down to give the cat's POV. About the fifth panel, the caption reads somthing like, "When company visits," the company is sitting in a living room only their knees downward showing and the cat is in the middle of the living room center stage with a leg sticking straight up and its face buried down under!! Too funny and so true. Now when I meet a new cat and spend some time with it, I wait to see it display this ballet pose pointing its toes skyward. They all do this, but not Jones.

In terms of the xenomorph's reproduction, it was inspired by certain wasps that lay their eggs inside still-living spiders, the eggs hatch and devour it from the inside. Giger translated this happening to a human, and we all know how violent it is

Centuries ago, _sailing_ ships started keeping cats on board to keep rodent-stowaway populations under control. They just might have the same problem on _space_ ships; especially on ships the size of the _Nostromo._ I couldn't say for certain, but probably.

I see that you think this one is superior to the second (which is awesome) and I agree. It is genius and so effective. I recently saw Alien in the theater where it is all dark and lonely and big!! Even though I saw it as a child at age 10 with my mom and thought it was just cool this time as an adult I was practically traumatized.
