In 2005 a Discovery Channel show called Mythbusters, which performs experiments to verify or debunk myths and urban legends, actually had and episode to if see an oxygen tank would explode if shot by a high powered rifle. It didn't explode but it did decompress very quickly and turned the tank into a compressed air rocket. So being propelled at 3000 psi the tank would have rammed itself down the shark's throat and out its ass basically gutting the shark.

@@evebarlowsrottencrotch8986 No that was a myth they busted. They found sharks can only exert a force of about a third of their own weight when exerting a constant pull on an object. When they tested how much force would be required to pull the Orca backwards, they found that Jaws would NEVER have been able to do that, because doing so would require it to exert a force of more than DOULBE its own weight, which is literally impossible for any shark alive today to do.

"Who wears a black shirt on the beach"- I've seen this movie so many times and I never noticed that! It actually fits in the movie. The chief and his family are outsiders, they are not locals. Not only that, but he has a deep fear of the water. These are character traits mentioned in the movie. It makes sense then that he would not be dressed quite right for hanging out at the beach.
@flibber123
@flibber123 3 жыл бұрын
@Frank Silvers You could be right but I think from the portrayal of the characters in the movie it's clear this goes far beyond 'he doesn't like the water'. He has a hardcore phobia. He's a grown man, he's not going to act like a wimp about it, but the whole point of his character arc is he needs to redeem himself for getting that kid killed. He has to force himself to overcome his fear of the ocean and go after that shark. By the way, they are outsiders enough that in one scene you can hear the chief's wife ask a local woman "When do we get to be locals' and the reply is "Never, you weren't born here". I bet that due to his phobia he never went near a New York beach either. He's portrayed as a guy who has spent zero amount of time hanging out in or around the ocean. That's just how I see it, maybe I'm wrong.

The speech has a few historical errors, the Indianapolis didn’t “deliver the bomb” just its uranium, it was sunk on 30 July not 29 June and a distress signal was sent. Plus he makes it seem like all the deaths were from shark attacks. Some men died of exhaustion, committed suicide and even killed each other as they suffered from delirium and hallucinations.
@douglascampbell9809
@douglascampbell9809 3 жыл бұрын
@@betsyduane3461 The average sailor wouldn't know that the bomb could have different assemblies. Hell most people didn't even know what radioactivity was. The records of the radio transmission not being acted upon by the three stations that received it were classified because the Navy didn't want to look any worse in the public's eye already. Once again the average sailor wouldn't have known about this because the records were classified probably into the 80's. So the story from the average sailor who was in the water rings true.

Fun fact: The original script for this movie was different, with a menstruous shark making more frequent appearances, but the mechanical shark failed so often they had to seat for hours while the technicians were fixing it. It was not the original script, but the movie became a master piece of suspense, by showing the shark as little as possible, a concept that was later repeated by other movies where the monster has very little time on screen and almost never seen in its entirety, like Alien.

The working title used among the cast and crew as a joke was "Flaws" due to the notorious difficulties during production. The 3 animatronic sharks weren't tested underwater and spent most of the 7-month location shooting undergoing maintenance. The Orca sank (the functioning one, not the one rigged to sink) resulting in the loss of a lot of expensive sound equipment and almost several reels of footage (the cinematographer assured Spielberg that the film would be fine as it was developed in a saline solution and had the reels rushed to the studio in NY to be developed). To think that if this film wasn't a success Steven Spielberg wouldn't be a household name. If you want to see what happened to the USS Indianapolis, I'd recommend the movie Men Of Courage with Nicholas Cage.

13:45 It's true that Tiger Sharks are known for consumption of inanimate, inorganic objects such as cans, bottles, tires, coal, rags, wood and license plates. The fact that they are willing to eat just about anything is what makes them one of the four most dangerous sharks in the world that are also man-eaters, along with the Bull, Great White and Oceanic Whitetip !!!

Now that you've seen Jaws, you need to watch "1941". All I'm gonna say is this: the actress in the opening sequence of 1941 is the same actress that was first to be eaten in Jaws.

5:25 that's kind of a misconception or at the very least an over-simplification. Color isn't a physical property itself, a thing's physical properties determine it's color. Things appear black because they're reflecting very little light, it's absorbing that light instead, which is why you can feel a difference in temperature of the hood of a black car as opposed to a white car. The Bedouin have lived in the desert for a long time, raising black sheep and wearing black robes. That's because they dress in layers, the inner layer stays cool partly because of the air in between the layers but also because the black outer layer is blocking the inner layer from direct sunlight. In the Chief's case, it's possible to get sunburn through a white shirt, even though it's unlikely, considering New England isn't near the equator. The Black might prevent that. but realistically it would make him hotter though, you're right about that.

You are correct with the black shirt at the beach but it's artistic license. Brody is terrified of the water and doesn't want to to in. Him wearing a black shirt at the beach was story telling and symbolism to his character growth to the end where he is in the water with the shark.

Jaws(1975) is based on Peter Benchley's 1974 novel. The Deep and The Island are also Benchley books. In the novel, the mayor was in cahoots with gangsters. The French title for Jaws 2 is "Les Dents de la Mer Deux"! In the Mexican film Picardia Mexicana(1978), you can see a kid wearing a Jaws T-shirt. The blonde woman who gets killed by a shark had a cameo in 1941(1979). Jaws has been spoofed in everything from SNL to The Simpsons to the Police Academy movies. Jaws was ripped off in the 1995 Italian film Cruel Jaws.

The camera effect at 6:33 is a dolly zoom, commonly referred to as the Hitchcock Vertigo effect as Hitchcock used it to great effect first in Vertigo (1958). Basically the camera is moved back will zooming in, or the reverse.

Another fun fact I didn't see in the comments. In the scenes with Hooper in the cage with the shark, the stunt double was actually a little person to make the shark look bigger. Good reaction! I had the same cringe reaction, and always do, with the nails on the chalkboard scene!! On to Jaws 2, 3 and 4....right?

It’s a fun movie, I’m glad you liked it 😊 I think the shark didn’t kill the sheriff’s son when he was in the pond because the boy was frozen with fear and couldn’t move so the shark didn’t know he was there or didn’t see him as prey. IMO the sequels don’t hold up to the original.

Nice reaction, after hearing you switching to "Spanish" for some "phrases" I had to listen to some Mototow songs XD. To me Jaws, Alien and The Exorcist are the big three from the 70s. Each a class of it's own. While speaking of Spanish. Mitsubishi has a car model since the 80s. It's called Shogun in the UK, Montero in Northamerica and Spanish speaking countries. Germany wanted to be clever and named it after the Latin word for Pampas Cat (Leopardus Pajeros) except they dropped the Leopardus part and just called it the "Pajero". No joke!

3 things about Jaws: 1) Peter Benchley hated he made people fear sharks after the movie they were certain sharks were hunted to near extinction. 2) The movie is based loosely on the 1916 shark attacks in New Jersey. 3) Chrissy swam at a known time when sharks hunt, pipette was based on a story from the 1916 attacks, the first attack of Alex Kittner was more violent and the cast was mostly locals.
