Bought a North Face 4 season down sleeping bag in California 1980 for $250. Used it loads..zipper broke and down filling thinned over time. In 1995 sent it to North Face importer in UK (am English) and they replaced zip,re-filled and returned it two weeks later for a token charge of £20. Still using the bag now! Literally a bag for life. AMAZING.

I picked this up for $60 at close out at my local North Face store today! The features in this are amazing. Glow in the dark zipper pulls, the bigger box in the feet section, the reversible stuff sack, and the way the hood is fit to keep your pillow from wandering away are all sweet. For $60 I have absolutely zero complaints.

Thank you for a fantastic review! I managed to find this new for $60 at a NF outlet, and couldn't pass it up. I have been looking for the comfort ratings so greatly appreciated you included these details on the video! To remove remove the layers from the bag, bring the zippers of either layer around the U shaped zipper to the left 'neck' where the zipper can come off the track. I missed this at first and it took me longer to figure out than it should have, so hopefully this helps someone else too 😅

You could use a regular inflatable pillow and throw it in that case as a pillow case. Actually amazing that they added that fleece. I use a separate fleece pillow case for my pillow and it's amazing for cold weather.

Cool concept, and i dont think 1.6kg for a -15°C sleeping bag is that bad tbh. I have even been considering to order a sowing machine and some materials so i can make something like this (and other things) myself. Hoping we will see more like this in the future. Maybe ideally one that is only synthetic, as i have experienced down being somewhat tricky to spread evenly inside the chambers, which have made me freeze on a summer night (in southern Norway), in a quilt that seemed "adequate" for around 2 or 3°C (i woke up pretty cold after some hours, when the temps had dropped to -2°C below freezing)...

After trying this bag, two potential down sides. Now you have two zippers to get in and out if using both layers on top, and the zippers have no sewn in guard fabric to keep the zipper from chewing up the bag liner. But it's sorta nice to have one bag that does both temps, since I don't backpack or camp all that often. I also don't think the down baffles are all that great, the down is allowed to clump in spots because of how big the baffling is.

The first time I unzipped this bag it got off track and the zipper broke. The zipper is horrible. Brought it back to REI and they went to switch it out, tested the zipper for me, it not only snagged, it got off track and they could not fix it. I wanted to love this bag because its down and versatile. I wound up getting a Marmot bag which was made a hell of a lot better.

I love my one-bag. The zipper weight and the make up of insulated layers and stuff sack.... yeah, I agree. BUT, I've had multiple 'bags and for Nov-Dec and then April-May and August thru to Oct in NY - I'm sure you can beat it - but I love it. Addendum, I don't use the stuff sack, it holds my mobile phone cables at home; saves me weight and saves me losing my cables.

You are Correct, it’s way too heavy. I have a Dana designs backpack that is about 20 years old. It is the most comfortable pack that I own. It will hold the most with an internal frame. The reason that I don’t use it is because it weighs 5 pounds and 8 ounces. My dyneema liteAF is 1# 9 ounces framed. It’s a no brainer. This bag is in the same category. Although it’s great to see manufacturers trying new ideas, this won’t work for me and I assume other thru hikers. It Sounds good for car camping. Happy trails.

Great video. I think for 99% of us this is a hit. Me personally I'd use it as a 40 or a 20 I really dont see me doing much camping at 5 degrees. And if I did do 5 degrees it would be a shorter weekend type trip. Its not like Id be doing the AT in 5 degrees.

Three years later. Would you still recommend this as a good sleeping bag? I'm shopping around for a bag to take on a week long rocky mountain back country hunt where temps can range from 60°f down to 15°f at any given day. My solution was to add to my Western Mountaineering 40 degree summer bag a 40 degree quilt in combination with a Sea to Summit thermolite liner. This 900 fill bag and quilt compress extremely small and weigh very little. I use them in combination for colder nights but don't really know how cold the rating would be. But since I don't do any extreme cold tenting I feel these serve my purposes without weighing me down too much or creating too much bulk.

Glad they went with synthetic layers. I'd much rather carry a very manageable little bit of extra weight and know if I get soaked / my bag gets soaked I won't freeze to death because it'll still insulate me. Lighter doesn't mean better. This modern weight obsession needs to cool down...

I mean I have NEVER had a soaked bag , I've had it get wet in places plenty of times if water ever gets into the tent floor but never soaked . It's not impossible though. But I di think light weight is important, weight can add up fast in a bag, The more weight you can cut on necessities, better time you're going to have on trail,

@@Redfiregtag In the UK, with constant rain, high humidity and lack of fires (illegal in England and Wales, and rarely a reliable option in Scotland due to the mostly barren landscape) any trips outside of summer longer than a few days usually have my bag very damp all the way through. Just gets impossible to keep kit dry at that point. If I'm going trekking abroad, however, it's a completely different story. I'm happy with trail runners, lightweight shelters and the bare minimum. Unfortunately, the UL game just isn't suited for the UK. Agreed that hiking with less weight is a much more pleasant experience, but hiking is a physical activity and I'd say people should focus more on training to be physically fit enough to carry reasonable weight before jumping into pricey UL gear as many do.

Truthfully, Synthetic technologies come a long way, I just haven't personally tried any. I agree 100% about people sould make sure they are fit enough to do normal weight hikes before investing alot in to lighter gear

When you mentioned it you took me back to my elementary days, wishing there was a better way to turn my towel into a cape than just tying it around my neck. I wish they had put the second zipper on the down top, that way, if you ever do double up the tops you only have to deal with one zipper pull at a time. I don't find my bag roomy enough to do the gymnastics required to zip both sides, of both zippers, either, so I would have liked for them to have made a way to fasten the zipper pull on one side or the other once zipped *trying to slide both pulls together just ends up with one or both pulls gathering some fabric in and jamming. I'd like to see the foot box and knee area a bit wider too. And, finally, there's no way to vent your feet on those nights where you're in between and a little too warm - those could have been added to the main/bottom bag... I find these issues more of an issue than the weight, given that I get way better performance from this bag than I did the older/cheaper/heavier one it replaced. I'd give it a six and a half out of ten, on an average day, and a nine out of ten on that one night that I finally need all three pieces together. ;)

All valid concerns! I originally thought the zippers could be arranged better so that you could leave more zipper behind when taking it in different configurations. But ultimately decided it wouldn’t have helped on the weight. But I understand you concern too. As I mentioned I haven’t slept in it with all the layers so I never had to deal with two zippers at once. Seems that will only be an issue less than 1/3 of the time you use this bag. And I noticed the zippers do snag, but no more than any other bag I’ve used. Which is why I didn’t bring that up. The feet vent is an issue I missed! This is no longer available, but! we learned one thing: We can layer a quilt over a sleeping bag (or get an outter sleeping bag 2 sizes bigger). I have a decathlon 5ºC (40F) bag, and one day i used a friend's 0ºC (32F) Quilt over it, and was able to be perfectly comfortable in a night of -10 ºC (20F). I also used a DIY fleece liner that I regularly use which I'd say give me an extra 2/3ºC below my bag's comfort limit.

Excellent review. I've been a bit of a North Face fanboy forever... but since moving to Australia... it gets a little sketchy. (They block 3rd party retailers in places like Canada & US from exporting their products to Australia). To purchase the One Bag in US is $290US (about $390AUS). To purchase the One Bag in Australia is $600AUS (about $450US). Some people could possible view this as a *restrictive trade practice*, or similar. 🤔 Fortunately, I have family in Canada & USA... but being expected to pay an extra $160US for the exact same product kind of sucks.

For other sporting equipment, I recall similar issues with Nike when putting through a bulk order (to reduce impacts of shipping fees) via Eastbay and other sites that supply multiple brands. Adidas/Under Armor/New Balance etc. have always been OK.

I agree you can get the same flexibility from a quilt or layering quilts. That’s why I pointed that out towards the end. But if you prefer sleeping bags there’s not much as versatile as the one bag. I have a military bag with 3 parts , two bags and one bivy, works great but all 3 combined is about ten pounds so deff good on a camping trip , not so much on a thru hike or backpacking trip .

I find it very strange that sleeping systems are not common. All that is required is appropriate sizing and zippers. This is easy to achieve. I will do something like that but using cheaper sleeping bangs and quilts. For car camping weight is not a problem and the idea of layering is wise

Honestly this feels like a gimmicky version of my two quilts. One 40° synthetic and one 20° down quilt just like you mentioned with the combined rating of apparently -10° which I haven't had a chance to confirm and may never get the chance. Your sleep system is worth the money. This bag is about the cost of a high quality 20° down quilt which will cover a lot of situations on its own. Up until this year that's all I'd been using. But quilts aren't for everyone. The big issue with this I see is that when I used mummy bags I would rotate the bag with me so that I wasn't breathing into the bag while I slept. You can't do that with this system since the bottom is lightly insulated. So if you're a back sleeper I could see it being an option. But for the price and weight you'd be better off getting a quality bag and using it quilt style in warm weather or going the quilt route IMO.

I don’t disagree. That’s why I mentioned that a quilt could basically do the same for less weight. But if you prefer bags I don’t know of anything else that is quite this versatile. I am not a back sleeper and didn’t adopt quilts till later. I turn in my sleeping bag and I’ve turned in this one. If it’s cold enough I prefer to tuck my head in too. So i didn’t experience any problems. But maybe that’s just me. Thanks for watching!

I do love this bag its super comfortable and feels great to sleep on, im a husky dude at 300 lbs and i fit perfectly in this thing , but of course the only downside as he stated is its just a heavy bag , and bulky , i really like backpacking with only a 35 l backpack and i can only really take this sleeping bag when im going with my wife Because she can help carry some of the camp supplies, But if i'm going solo I can't fit sleeping bag plus all my other gear and a 35 l , so i end up taking a down quilt , and strap a cheap Synthetic quilt on the outside of my bag incase i get to cold

Seems like this might be a great choice for the occasional outdoors person, gets out a couple of times a year in different seasons. But as soon as you do a lot of this stuff, you can spend about 2x and get the right quilt or bag for the season across all three seasons - to your point, without necessarily sacrificing versatility. And if you get out a lot, saving a pound over say, thirty nights a year (which isn't even a big number) would come down to about $5 per trip for that pound of savings. Oh, and congrats on the channel's great growth the last 6 months; your quality work is deserving of the reward!

Nicely done Steven! I personally would never buy this b/c of the weight and prob wouldn't recommend it to any backpackers but for car campers or maybe even glampers this might do the trick. The design is ingenious but definitely flawed based on what you pointed out in the video. Instead of having 3 separate zippers they could've had one zipper pull with 3 ports. I agree about making everything down but the additional zippers add additional snag points. I would say UGQ or EE should take note but they don't need to make something to compete. Why make a layering system when they can charge for 2 (or 3) full sized quilts? Especially when they'll most likely be lighter individually. For backpackers this item isn't it, but the ingenuity is def cool.

Yes. It’s intended to be the top layer. So for 5° it’s synthetic on top, down in middle, synthetic on your back. For 20° just synthetic back and down top, for 40° synthetic back and synthetic top. Hope that’s clear?

No it does not. There are two loops at the foot but believe these are just to give you something to hang the bag but to air it out after a hike.

No unfortunately it’s not. I typically replace them with a compression dry sack from sea to summit. Then I’ll use the dry bag to hang food in at night.

@@nolannahdee1477 REI, a local chain, was $224. Good bag! Warm probably down to 32/0 in full, I doubt the advertised 5 Fahrenheit, that must be survival temp. Very well made but no pockets.

FFS the weight of the bag is not some secret you only find out about after you buy the damn thing. It's not a hard-core weight-weeny backpackers bag and doesn't pretend to be.

Nothing new here. It’s been (re-) invented many times. The basic problems remain: too many zips, too heavy and inefficient. TNF, once a market leader in high quality outdoor equipment, is now just another tacky fashion house. There are a lot of companies producing better products at better prices.

I wondered if it was possible to use 2 sleeping bags together. I was thinking this may work for a thru-hiker to have 2 bags together and then simply ditch a cheap one as it got warmer instead of sending one home and having another one sent out.

You can certainly use two quilts together. Or a sleeping bag and a liner. I would worry two sleeping bags one inside the other could compress the insulation on both leaving the less effective. Maybe if you got inside one and draped the other one open on top. That might work. Thanks for watching!

I mean I said it’s sponsored by sports basement. If I didn’t think $300 was a good deal for 3 different temp ratings I wouldn’t have said it. I hope the fact that I said you can basically achieve the same thing with a quilt speaks to my credibility. If all I wanted to do was sell the bag I wouldn’t have mentioned that. Or any con. It is in my best interest to build trust over sales. If I don’t build trust this won’t last long. Are you not interested in saving the $11? Or you just don’t like the way I said it? @@MyLifeOutdoors I'm ok with sponsored videos, dogs gotta eat. You put in an amazing amount of effort to your videos, I appreciate that and you should absolutely reap the rewards. Certainly to some extent I'm just razing you. But on the other hand, the way you said that line absolutely made it sound like an infomercial. In your previous videos you would have described the price as "around $300" or just stated the price. I don't know if that line came from you or sports basement but it felt a bit icky. Particularly compared to your usual style which is so upfront (which is so refreshing). Sure $11 under $300 isn't $300 but it isn't that big a difference to warrant that kind of a line. It's still very much in the general ballpark of $300. At $300 it seems like it would probably be a decent sleeping bag, so there really wasn't a need to quibble over $11. Do I get the steak knives now? 🙃

@@tjmarx Glad you responded! Sports basement didn’t give me complete freedom without any guidance. They wanted my authentic opinion. (To their detriment. I got their return policy wrong. You can return items at any time for a full refund.) So all the wording was my own. I’ll admit I am excited to work with them and hope to do so in the future. So I was putting in extra effort. That maybe where it started to sound funky. At the risk of going to far I legitimately think they are doing things well. Besides their return policy I believe they will price match at any time. From what I know I think they deserve some love. But I will say this conversation will be in my mind the next time I do a sponsored video. Thanks again.
