What Geoff's talking about is "the Form of the Good". If you read Plato's account in The Republic he basically explains that we are the universe that named itself. There has to be some great universal constant that allows there to be an "us", an "it", and for us to know that there is an "it" - and so for the "it" to know that it exists. Hegel said the same thing. The universe is not an option for God. God knows himself to be God when philosophical man knows what Plato knew. The great Islamic philosophers Averroes and Avicenna disagreed about whether, when you die, your own particular consciousness and existence continues, or whether you'd been living a bit of an illusion your whole earthly existence. It's not that you have an identity that's defined by your skin, it's that consciousness exists, so when "you" die this is no more significant for your real identity than a kid being born on the other side of the world this second. You're not what you think you are. Christ said he was not of this world, but the disturbing thought it that nor are you. So the real you can't put on shoes, because you are not essentially a shoe-wearer you are consciousness. This was Descartes' mistake. He thought that he had established that he existed because he was thinking, but all that he had really established is that thinking is going on.

If you want to know for yourself what swearing does to you, try to stop it for a year and see what effect it has. Then you have a choice because you know both sides of it. I know I have escaped. I never would want to go back.
