Between your shorts and the recent videos, the production quality of your examples/interstitials has gotten so good recently. I've been loving your and net shaq's ingredient and category explainers. This video was nicely done! I also greatly respect the flex of turning chickpeas into a bacon-y substitute. You continue to innovate in ways that make already craveable and infinitely useful staples like chickpeas fresh, interesting, and even surprising.

It should also be said: foods which inspire contemplative and awe-inspired chewing and just straight-up horking down both have their place at the table, equal in dignity and culinary importance. This definitely falls into the category of "shove into your face as quickly as possible due to amazing flavor" 😂

Yum! I'd probably use Simmnett Nutrition's recipe for bacon sauce and toast the chickpeas in that. (This can be used on anything you want to make taste like bacon. I’ve put it on soy curls, rice paper, and jackfruit. You could probably just use it as a salad dressing if you wanted to. Lol) 3 tb Soy sauce 1 tsp maple syrup 1 tsp paprika 2-3 drops of liquid smoke (seriously, it only needs a couple.) 2 tb nutritional yeast Big pinch of black pepper

I've only recently discovered chickpeas - you can do a lot with them. I buy them "raw", soak them overnight in some bicarb, then cook them in the InstaPot to get the aquafaba which I then use in other recipes (aquafaba is a great egg white substitute). Apparantly chickpeas can be made into tofu & tempeh but I haven't tried this out yet. Chickpeas are a little more expensive than other beans so I prefer to use chickpeas for my main dishes (like curries & stews) and soups. I use white kidney beans for bread spreads & mayo etc. This recipe looks very yummy so I'll have to keep a few chickpeas aside for a nice BLT sandwhich (great for summer) - thanks!

It sucks how much more work and skilk good vegan cooking takes. BLT only requires cooking bacon and assembling your sandwich. This required making mayo & more complex cooking of chickpeas. It looks really good. But it'd def be easier to cook bacon and use store bought real mayo.
@SauceStache5 ай бұрын
Thats not true at all...You're basing the entirety of vegan cooking off KZbin cooking shows. Ever watch BBQ Channels? It would seem like animal based cooking takes soooo much more time if you watch them, they are brining, smoking, and cooking for days straight just to get a roast. I can ALSO just buy pre made vegan bacon, toss it on a pan and throw together a sandwich. I was just making something from scratch here.
@reed65145 ай бұрын
@@SauceStache fair point about premade bacon. And yeah, meat cooking can def get complex too. I based my view on personal experience. When i do cook, it's almost always vegan. It's been years since i regularly cooked meat, but i did find it easier to get into, to make tasty dishes that are cooked well. It's hard to judge though, bc it's been so long & an anxiety disorder makes things seem harder these days than in my early 20s. (Early 30s now) At the very least, vegan cooking requires some different skills than meat cooking, and i certainly didn't grow up around vegan cooking.

@Qaetan5 ай бұрын
I like a lot of your recipes, and I've learned a lot about vegan substitutes in your channel as I've moved towards a more fully veggie diet. However man I don't understand your format of saying, "This is better than bacon!" for this video and others. Don't you think that's going to be off-putting to people that might otherwise be interested in trying this? Let the product speak for itself rather than drawing unnecessary comparisons unless, of course, you're looking to drum up controversy for whatever reason. For this recipe you've posted today there isn't any similarity in flavor between chickpeas and bacon. Absolutely none. Adding smoked paprika and maple syrup doesn't magically make it taste like bacon. You didn't add anything to bump up the umami taste you'd expect of something like bacon like I've seen you do for other videos like your starchy bacon ones. Also fat isn't bad! Fat is an important part of diet, and like all things is good in moderation. This is something I feel the vegan / vegetarian mindset among so many have gotten wrong. Vegan / vegetarian dishes don't have to be competition with meat dishes. If you want to entice people looking to explore more veggie dishes trying to tell them it's better than bacon is a sure fire way to turn them away. As a personal example when I make my chickpea "meat"loaf, and my beef eater friends try it, I describe it as meatloaf adjacent. It almost has the same texture, and the taste isn't far off from what you'd expect of a classic meatloaf. What I don't do is claim it's better than a regular meatloaf. My chickpea meatloaf DOES taste different, but it also tastes good on its own. I don't need it to be in competition with meat to entice my friends to try it.
