Truth. Adding to that, the amount of suffering reduced by billions of people replacing 1 meal a week with plant based meat is huge. It might not be a healthy vegan option but it sure would have a meaningful impact.

I'm a strict vegetarian I but I make an effort to be as plant based as possible, supporting vegan businesses where I can find them. My mental health is better when I don't obsess over eating the "right" food (I tend toward a bit of disordered eating otherwise) so I just gently nudge myself to be as plant based as I can. ❤

@richardgleaves (Poe's Law) Breeding animals is always exploitation. However, many human-animal (aka pet) relationships are mutually beneficial. // Rescuing dogs from a kennel may seem to justify or make breeding seem more acceptable. However good cannot be blamed for bad. Yet the human responsible for feeding a pet faces a moral dilemma.

I think it’s ok to be a vegetarian sometimes. The way I look at it is right now our first hope as vegans is to see the meat industry crash (or at least see more humans not eating meat). As long as you’re not touching a dead animal it’s fine. That’s my philosophy anyways. And I always go for dairy free alternatives whenever it’s feasible.

What vegans need to keep in mind with meat eaters is that meat eaters aren’t eating meat for the sake of cruelty. 1. It IS hard to cut out a whole food group. Imagine the people who are encouraged to go vegan in the middle of pro diet culture. NOW they have to cut out meat IN ADDITION to bread, pasta, and ice cream ? I don’t encourage the vegan diet for people struggling with an eating disorder (or anyone that’s afraid to eat more than 1200 calories) I’d rather see someone form a healthy relationship with food before they feel ready to commit to veganism. After all, we don’t need people perpetuating the myth that veganism is unhealthy or unsustainable. It really irks me when vegans are like “we only eat meat because it feels good!” NO! We EAT food because it’s a source of energy and nutrition and we’re used to getting it from meat primarily 😤

@@SamanthaManning-xy8futhe problem is that some people just don't find any issue with the fact that animals are dying for their convenience. I did, which is why I stopped eating meat. The way someone treats me will not make me go back on my morals, and I feel that anyone who feels strongly about something will have similar conviction. Even if the entire vegan community somehow turned against me, I would simply not associate with them, but I would still continue with my current lifestyle. I would not buy animal products out of spite

We aren’t vegan, but 95% of our meals are. When we made the decision to change our diet 7 years ago, my partner didn’t want to give up fish. So we have fish twice a month at most. We tell others we are eating with that we are vegan, so we don’t have to go through an explanation of what a dairy-free pescatarian eats, or risk someone serve us fish with dairy, etc. I look at it in the sense that we are making a difference with our diet, and we feel a hell of a lot better than we did prior. Gatekeeping sucks, and trying to call out people that are living their life, creating great content and recipes (freely) that benefit many also sucks. A lot of people would be happier if they spent more time looking for the good, or appreciating people, than trying to tear them down. Myself included. Thanks Derek, I appreciate the recipes and openness you bring to your videos.

Wise words! Thank you so much. I’ve been a vegan for 27 years, and I’m surrounded by meat eaters. When I first started, I used to be judgmental, but that approach achieved nothing. Now, I’ve shifted my perspective. Instead of pushing my beliefs onto others, I cook for everyone and even buy vegan treats for my co-workers. This approach has shown me how much more effective it is to gently guide people toward a kinder lifestyle.

My gran used to say “you get more flies with honey, than with vinegar”. ❤️💕🙏🏼….. so I really love the idea of making vegan/plant based treats for family or coworkers! That works much better than giving a lecture or criticism. Everyone loves a yummy treat!! I started my plant based journey due to nearly dying from an autoimmune disease. I found that Dr’s were not listening to me and pushing me in all the wrong directions. In 2015 at just age 45, I could no longer work and was in and out of the hospital. My Dr had put me on The Keto Diet and I got even worse, by worse I literally mean I was at deaths door. I became a type 2 diabetic (overnight) and you name the blood test, I failed it…. Even my kidneys were failing. Lucky for me, a plant based rheumatologist just happened to visit me in my hospital room as my Dr was out sick that day (turned out to be one of the best days of my life) he said to me “have you ever tried plant based?” As he looked at my chart, when I said “no, my Dr put me on Keto, she said that was best”… he just shook his head in amazement……..He said “I have a book for you, please read it, it’s also free on Audible, I’ll go and grab a copy from my office, I’ll be right back!” I was moved to actual tears at the thought of a Dr actually caring…. Really caring! So while he was going back to his office to get me a physical copy of the book, I downloaded it on Audible…. I popped in my headphones and listened to every word. That Book was The Starch Solution, By Dr John McDougall…. And it’s truly changed my life. In just 3 months, all my tests, even my kidney function, were normal. Just 3 months of plant based and no oils…. I also effortlessly lost 30 pounds. I never lost weight on keto like most people claim….. nope…. I gained weight, the saturated fat was to much for me. Anyways, my point is, everyone’s journey to Whole Foods, plant based is different. I got here to this point for health reasons… but of course I stay for the animals, and I’d continue to do so, even if I didn’t have to eat this way, to sustain my health! ❤️💕🙏🏼

This approach genuinely works. I grew up with mostly standard Eastern European cooking, so a lot of it focused on meat. But as I had a chance to be more adventurous with my food choices and met people who cooked delicious vegan and vegetarian food, I started including more and more of it in my own cooking. I still eat meat, but I'd say my diet is around 25% vegan, 50% vegetarian and only around 25% meat based (and even here I generally avoid beef). Not because someone yelled at me or demanded moral purity, but because a lot of people showed me a lot of big and small ways I can make my food tastier, healthier and kinder to all living things.

OK as someone who has justified reasons to keep eating meat (which have pretty much run out now), but doesn't really even like meat, I promise your approach works. It's like every time we try a delicious plant based meal, it's like yeah why eat meat? I've learned to cook so many freaking delicious vegetable dishes... On a somewhat related note, a few weeks back my dad bought some super expensive steaks and grilled them for me and my brothers birthday. I made this lime cilantro rice and my dad also made crispy broccoli, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. My brothers used to looove steak. I couldn't eat it...but my brothers like each took 2 bites and then ate everything else on the plate. And got seconds of everything else. My dad looked sad like "I thought you guys' favorite food was steak." And one of them was just like "I dunno what happened but it just feels weird chewing pieces of flesh." Like that's a breakthrough.... So much more flavor and health us meat eaters have missed out on, and you're saving lives by doing what you do! Thanks for the inspiration ❤

Thank you so much for this! I went vegetarian in 1983 (I was 12), for the animals. By 1985 I was vegan. I wavered back-and-forth between vegetarian and vegan for a couple of decades, but have been committed to plant-based for about 10 consistent years now. I also hate using the word. “vegan“ because it’s so loaded and people get so offended! I have been hearing vegan and vegetarian jokes and theories about anti-veganism my whole freaking life! I’ve literally heard it all. I only know a few vegans and none of us bash other people for eating meat, yet people automatically get defensive as if we will. It’s so strange. I really don’t care what other people eat-if it makes them feel good, and I don’t believe bullying people into doing ANYTHING it’s EVER going to be effective. Being plant-based is a personal choice and a personal journey. When people ask me about being vegan, I’ve even stopped answering-I just tell them to go to websites or watch documentaries like “Cow because I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything! And I never did try to. I am vegan for the animals. I am vegan because personally I just can’t stomach the idea of eating meat. That’s my personal decision. There are no perfect vegans. That’s ridiculous. I could go on and on about why there are no “perfect” vegans… there are so many things that people have no idea aren’t actually vegan and it’s mind blowing… Just to name one… Pepto-Bismol! 😮 But I’m not going to waste my time listing everything. Also… Vegans can be overweight/obese! Sometimes it is about diet (vegan junk food is extremely prevalent now-it was not in the 80s/90s), but a lot of the time it can be about genetics or menopause or stress or insomnia or hormones or other countless things. People just need to stop judging each other 😡. We’re all just doing the best that we can. Even if you only eat a few vegan things, or vegan once a week, or just keep an open mind. And I do think it’s true that a lot more people would be vegan if they had to kill and butcher their own meat every time they wanted to eat it. People used to grow, raise, prepare their own food. Grocery stores and markets are awesome for convenience… But they should not be used at the expense of being capable of growing and creating your own meals. I commend you for your compassion and strength. Thank you! 💚🌿

I'm not vegan nor completely vegetarian, but my aim is to eat at least 80% plant based so I'm always looking for vegan recipes and this one I'm totally gonna try. What's most important to me is that the food I buy is local, so I don't want to use avocado, quinoa and other "trendy" foods that are often featured in vegan recipes. These ingredients travel thousands of miles by plane or ship to my country, making them unsustainable for me to use. This recipe is awesome because the ingredients are easy to find locally, AND it looks delicious and easy to make! I respect and admire vegans for their moral choice and I wish we could all strive for a more sustainable society without looking down on others for not being "perfect" enough. What's most important is that each one of tries to do their best.

Derek I thank you for this video. Its so strong. I've been vegan/plant based for 13 years -- and health oriented vegan for about 8 of those years. What we all need to emphasize is the compassion as you say. I originally read a diet book called Skinny Bitch that talked about how we treat the animals we eat for food and after closing the book I never ate meat or eggs again. I could not participate in what we do and I haven't. Not only that but if people knew what happens to the environment from massive animal farming operations they would think twice again. I'm glad you don't try to shame people or blame but just make an appeal to people's hearts. That is so important.

Couldn't agree more. Vegan/vegetarian eating is not about purity or shame. It's not a religion. It's about acknowledging that causing suffering and harm against a being that can't consent (or hasn't consented) to the risk of harm is bad. Reducing suffering to the extent of your ability is good. Harm reduction. Ending needless suffering. That's the whole deal. No one gives a sh*t about your purity. Help people on their journey; don't tear them down for not walking fast enough.

From a non vegan but environmentally conscious, I'm sure it's worse for the environment to replace your boots with new vegan ones than simply keeping yours. Replacing animal based clothing after becoming vegan makes no sense from a sustainability point of view. It's nothing but dogma. The animal is already dead and that can't be changed; you won't make the world or yourself better by replacing them, and in fact you could add to C02 emissions and pollution. It makes even less sense with wool garments, as most vegan knits are acrylic/polyesther which are terrible for the environment.

Your words really resonate with me. My wife and I decided to go vegan 6 months ago after slowly adding more vegetarian meals to our diet over the past couple of years. It wasn't intentional but in hindsight I see we started making this switch a long time ago and just this year consciously said we are putting a label on it, but I was thinking about that label the other day. After having lunch with coworkers and them noticing my order and asking me if I was vegetarian I told them the story of how I got here and some were encouraging but others were shaking their heads because "they could never do it" which a year ago I would have said too. But the label of vegan is just a way to help describe you. In reality I prefer to avoid animal products for environmental and health reasons. But it took baby steps to get here and that's what I tell everyone. And now I'm having to relearn how to cook and your videos have been very helpful on that front!

We'd get more people on on "team" being enthusiastic, encouraging, kind and NOT militant. I don't know about some folks, but if someone comes at me with what I'm doing wrong and full of judgement and militancy, I'm not going to bend to what they think I should do. Good work & message, Derek!

I’ve been a vegetarian since 15 years of age. I have only shown different opinions through the years . I have NEVER pushed a vegetarian agenda ! We lead by example: while respecting those who feel they need meat . Some are creating a bad reputation for we who elect not to eat meat. I greatly appreciate your contributions and happily share your vids .

Your presence power is all I needed to see. I am hooked. The depth of your being radiates, thru everything on the screen. It screams reverence from your mighty companion and guardian of being at your side, to the skill of the food prep, the creativity off the wall, the essence in which you communicate to the audience, and on and on. Brother you have this down, don’t allow the small mindedness of unconscious people seep in. You are a gift/blessing and watching you is a meditation in itself. Much gratitude/ respect 🙏

I loved the "rant" at the end! I call myself wfpb for that very reason. No need to convict others...that sows seeds of dissection.. I'm also a Christian and would say that is my gripe with many "religious" people. God is love, (he wants all of us in heaven with him) he wants us to love others as ourselves. How can we sow seeds of love with envy or condescension in our hearts? Compassion takes learning (and in my opinion, God's help). Blessings to you all❤

Thank you so much for your message about compassion. I used to walk about a block away from a butcher’s house and hear the animals crying in fear and pain. I will never forget their anguish and how powerless and helpless I felt to be of any help. It is one of the most horrific soul piercing experiences. I wholeheartedly embrace love and compassion for sentient beings and especially for those who cannot defend themselves

Animal’s aren’t alive when they arrive at a butcher, they are carcasses. They are slaughtered at a slaughterhouse and the carcasses are butchered at the butcher shop into sale to consumers instead of wholesale because Mrs Smith wants a pound of sausage and a couple of pork chops, not a 400lb side of beef. If you heard animal noises near to a butcher you probably heard local cats fighting or fornicating and dogs barking but knew there was a butcher living or working nearby, and most butchers don’t live or sleep in their butcher shop their house and business are almost always in different locations with work and home being in different places, and who may have had pets, but as a little kid you added 2 to 2 and came up with 22.

I am starting my plant based journey (I am about a month and a half in at this point) it is something that was recommended for me to try by my doctor to help with blood pressure issues. I’m down to about 2 or 3 days a week that still have some animal products and trying to go all the way. It was difficult in the beginning but I like veggies, always have, so maybe slightly easier for me. What I find being the really difficult thing is that I have been cooking for about 25 years and going plant based for me is more about relearning to cook. I struggle with that more than anything. It makes things easier to move forward when people are nice and ready to share even if you’re still trying to make the transition so I really appreciate this video.

You're a gem, Derek! I can't count the times I've been shamed online (never irl thankfully) for being a vegetarian who tries to eat plant-based 3-4 times a week, but not for the moment planning to go fully vegan. There are reasons and constraints for many people who aren't 'perfect' vegans, and it sure doesn't help to tell people that they're just ethically inferior for not reaching someone else's magical standards. I myself have seen how much more difference it makes to be a non-judgmental example for people by cooking for them, sending them recipes and channels (like this one), sharing inspiration, etc. It takes time to change your mindset anyway, people who have already done that sometimes forget that.

You are planting a seed for me. I like to cook but I am not vegan. I just love watching your videos because I learn a lot and you make vegan look so good. Where as before I had a view of vegan food being tasteless and boring. I am currently trying to cut back on my meat intake and working more toward vegan. But I will say some vegans...(And people a part of other movements) Give these movements a bad reputation by simply being toxic about it. And it's sad and unproductive. Keep doing the great work , you are such a great cook and I learn a lot from your videos.

If you like to cook you are 3/4ths there. I think it’s much harder to be vegan for those who don’t enjoy the creative process of cooking. I remember foods I loved and want to retreat them. I’ve mastered tuna salad, pimento cheese, and many other childhood favorites.

What you said is true for every group. People who try to force others to believe in what they believe in, most of the time push them away. If they do agree, then saying "Well youre not doing enough", can push people away too. People need to get that coming off too strong, or draconian for a cause, isnt the best way to get people to believe in it. Im not a vegan, nor am I a part of veganism in any way, but I know that 99% of vegans are just normal people, and just like any group, that 1% gives the rest of them a bad rap. People need to understand that just because youre 100% in on a cause or lifestyle, doesnt make you better than someone whos just getting into it, or not in it at all

Yeah, Vegans treat being Vegan like meat is a fucking drug addiction. They act like days without meat is equivalent to days clean without heroin when that's not only unproductive but unrealistic. It should be about what % of your diet you've reduced meat to if anything.

“You can never be vegan enough” - thank you for voicing it. I no longer say “I’m vegan”, and I tend to just go with “Im plant based” . That’s to avoid criticism as I sometimes feel people looking at me, as if trying to find leather, wool and any other animal products attached to my body. And I still have a few items, purchased years ago, when I was vegetarian. I can’t afford to replace sofas with wool fabric, woolly jumpers, and a a couple of handbags. A few of these are almost 15 years old!!! I don’t purchase loads of things at all, but I feel pressured to do so, to substitute and be “good”. It is tricky, but I feel that I’m better today than I was last year, and next year I will be better than I am today. We will move forward, and we will do better :) . Ps this sandwich looked amazing

I started being vegan for my health in 1990. I evolved to the animals and environment very quickly. I ate so pure of vegan that my body told me, and not very politely if there was something in a food that I didn’t want in there. I learned not to trust restaurants or potlucks, because people lie…. 😢💔. I just take my own. I’m allergic to feathers and wool, so no one is going to trick me with bedding, etc. I like fake meats and fake eggs but I don’t want it to taste like the original. In fact before going vegan I think I became allergic to eggs. Burping rotten eggs is not fun. Meat department stink to high heaven. 🤢🤢 I’m not a preaching vegan. I didn’t become a preaching ex-smoker, I decided not to become a preaching vegan. If they ask, then I might offer insight. But now 80, well, I don’t drink enough water. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️😳

Maybe “no grief vegan” can be a new category, vegans who aren’t interested in giving others grief about how they eat but still able to advocate for animals, sharing info on veganism to help educate others, not shame them. And part of it too would be acknowledging we’re not always “perfect” vegans. I don’t mean people who say they’re vegan but then oh yeah they eat fish…and occasionally cheese…and steak on special occasions-so, you know, not really vegan yet, but maybe striving to be (which is worthwhile too- maybe “vegan in training” is a good name for this group?). I mean those of us who sometimes feel exhausted or overwhelmed by the carnist-centric world that puts animal products in everything and forget to ask or can’t handle asking on a given day if there’s any milk solids in the bread that comes with our salad. Or have cats that we still feed a meat diet. Or care about waste and the planet so don’t see any value or benefit to animals in throwing out the leather shoes we bought prior to becoming vegan.
