Your report is great. I'm German and live near a town myself, Alsfeld in Hesse, which, like Rothenburg, has a beautiful historic town center with a famous town hall and hundreds of great half-timbered houses. Whenever we have visitors from the USA or other countries, we take them on a trip to Rothenburg. It's worth it every time. A little tip about the many missing town walls around the old towns. Very few of them were destroyed in the 2nd World War. Many of the city walls were "razed" by the passing armies of the participating royal houses during the 30 Years' War (1618 - 1648). They were destroyed so that they could not be fought against so fiercely. Many other city walls were also simply demolished because the stones were needed for other things. For houses or bridges, for example.

Thank you very much for both the kind words and recommendations on visiting Alsfeld. We'll have to put it on or list!
