I laid down 16 squares by myself this past summer. Synthetic felt, i&w all around, rigid ridge vent, a bunch of plywood patches. It went well, considering I was terrified of heights in the beginning. I watched a ton of your stuff and Eric's stuff. Real helpful and also humbling. You can lay as many squares in an hour as I do in a day 🤣

I'm a contractor a actual working contractor, my hands are dry split and cracked, no Manis and pedis for me. It's sad how many so called contractors are really just middle, I'm busy year round people like that's it's me and the same people that show up every day. I do prefer a 6 foot bed I'll be honest, but I also generally have a double axle cargo trailer or dump trailer behind me and I can parallel park with trailers in downtown traffic. When I need to move a lot of material I have a f450 flatbed/2.5 yard dump truck. It would be perfect for jobs like this you are the dumpster and you can move it all around. Keep it up man I don't get why there is so many haters, they are either hacks or have no idea how the trades really are.

"A good shingler doesn't need felt or ice shield" (18:57). Not to be harsh, but don't say that to anyone in a northern climate. Speaking from personal experience, ice dams are real and the I&W shield acts as the final line of defense from the roof deck becoming a rotten disaster. (And yes, attempts can be made to prevent ice dams, but they can still happen...)

As a retired Journeyman roofer who spent 34 years on the roof let me give you young men some advice that may save you the serious pain i live with everyday ,#1 take damn good care of your feet,buy high quality socks and work boots,change your boots for new boots every month if you can afford it,not taking care of my feet until the last decade i worked left my back & feet destroyed where it hurts to walk,the other advice is to take care of your hands by wearing gloves,i know gloves make everything harder but if you wear the elastic padded gloves with velcro wrists youll prevent getting arthritis and nerve damage in your finger tips like most of us geezers have ,as far as your job it looks good . Heres a link of the roof project that is the job im most proud of being senior foreman on ,i had 50 to 60 men everyday and we made the biggest roof lift in history ,History Channel sent a film crew to capture the roof lift for an episode of the tv show Modern Marvels ,the job was just over 6,000 square with 2,200 square being lifted 12 feet above existing roof elevation to make room for taller machines ,the entire project costs were $12.3 million dollars ,the 2nd half of the video shows my crew raising the roof,you guys & other professional roofers here might find it interesting,im super proud to have done that project. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZucdGCllr9pb6M

Hi Josh....i use a red ripper and tell all workers that until all nails are removed from that shingle(4-6) do not rip off another shingle....it is good form....if you miss one , rather pull or pound, could cause future problems....also i have come across a roof or two where all roofers before just pounded down the nails.....the sheeting was so peppered with nails i had to re-sheet.

You could have it hovering over you filming what you do and then just get a mic that you can wear on you sho were could hear you better ... not bashing at all, just a thought is all... i love watching your videos, i use to do alot of roofing, siding, gutters, and even tile work, but I've been watching this one guy on you tube that does alot of excavating and he is building a castle in New York. He uses a mavic pro and that thing is bad ass, he can set it above where he is working and it will hover for a long time showing everything he is doing. Great work on everything you do, very educational and you got a great crew, they seem to do a great job and you seem to be a great guy to work for.

Well for one thing the old tar paper should be removed not only to see the condition of the wood underneath but to also re-nail any wood that is loose or under nailed, a good thorough roofing crew will inspect and re-nail all wood joints and any loose rafters, by the looks of it i highly doubt these guys were that thorough, but regardless all old tar paper should be removed.

@@Beandiptheredneck The point of breathable underlayment is in the unlikely case (for a good job anyway) that water gets beneath the underlayment, it can breath back out and not be trapped where it will rot the wood. Just like for installing windows and doors, you don't seal the bottom because you want a place for moisture to escape if it does get behind your water proofing.

@Josh-ww5kz
@Josh-ww5kz 3 жыл бұрын
Synthetic should be good, either use cap nails or just use the hammer tacker and staple the top overlap a bunch of times, and tack the bottom part where it overlaps the run of synthetic, every 4 ft or so. Because your next run of paper will cover the top overlap. Don't staple in the field, just where the paper overlaps itself. Could even just put a smear of caulking on the staples at the bottom overlap if you're wanting but unless it's going to be hammering out then it's not that necessary. If you already have the bundles up there you could also just lay the bundles around the roof to give it a better hold I stead of the staples. granted that the pitch is fairly low, 6/12 and lower as above that bundles tend to slide. I'd agree with using ice and water if the roof pitch was a 4/12 or lower though. That stuff is pretty expensive and doesn't cover as much squares on a roof as synthetic does per roll cost.

How long will a good felt last? When the shingles age and begin to fail, will the felt still keep the building relatively dry? When I began in construction back in the 70's, my boss had me felt the roof and it was left to stand for months that way, through the winter, and then I shingled it in the spring. Meanwhile all the drywall and finish work had been done inside. We never had any water problems.

Jackson Smith that’s what on the books anyways. Probably a whole lot of cash on top of that, assuming they don’t work when it’s raining and 3 months of the year 38k declared puts them somewhere mid $20s an hour. Anyone who shingles for 16$ an hour is stupid and any boss who wants to pay a shingler 16$ an hour needs a smack

Usually when your lay down your first run of ice/water or synthetic you're able to tell, eave metal can sort or straighten it out if it's not drastic. Other than that you could chalk some lines at the eaves, go from one end, put a starter down, leaving your 1/2" exposure, go to the opposite end do the same and chalk from the top edge of the starter across

Could you do a video while you guys are laying down underpayment and the proper steps to put it in. One that preferably has a valley or two and a few curbs. It’d be awesome. I do sheet metal roofs but we don’t usually do our own underlayment so it’d be nice to know when we actually do have a roof I have to waterproof. We usually use grace or tiger paw. Anyways your videos are awesome!!

A year later but Always lay your ice and water shield down at the eaves first, staple the top corner, making sure to release the plastic backing on the corner and, pull it out in 15 ft increments, adjust so it's lined up in the eaves right. Staple the top, repeat. Take the bottom backing off when you finish at the eaves. when you get to a valley, just have it go up the opposite side of the roof by a few inches, then the same on the other side. Then do your valley next, starting from the top, because having a 50lb row going up is a lot harder then having gravity help you pull it down. Do the same with the backing, peel one side, make sure to center it in the valley, and carry on. The ice and water at the eaves should be 4ft up in the valley if you did it right, so the valley i&w doesn't exactly need to go right down the the eaves. Next is the synthetic paper, start at your rake and work inwards to the valley, now you're going to want to cut it at a 45° angle following the valley, just have it overlap the i&w by 6 inches. Then use that same angle and flip the paper the otherway, it should be following the same angle and then work your way with the paper towards the rake where you started, just alternate that till you get to the peak. Obviously if you've put ice and water on before you know it's a pain in the ass doing it while it's hot out and that it sticks to itself like crazy.
@Josh-ww5kz
@Josh-ww5kz 3 жыл бұрын
Only thing is when it comes to metal roofing you would want to forsure use cap nails if you're using synthetic underlayment, if you're using Ice and water you could just use staples at the top overlap if it's not adhering to the roof deck right away, just to hold it there as the sun adheres it to the roof deck, staples at that spot don't matter that much as you're next run will cover them anyways, but that only really works if you're putting strapping down because the cap nails will show through the metal roofing when it's laid down and screwed to the roof deck.

Know this video is a little old but I'm curious as to why you don't have a dump truck instead. My company doesn't use dumpsters there not cost effective and like this they don't always get put close to the job. Also question do you guys ever lay soldier courses instead of pyramids? Its by far a faster and more efficient way lay shingles.

Why not? It's designed to seal around the nails between the shingles, and the ice/water. That seal prevents water from getting below it.

Technically you will have to become a roofing contractor if you ever want to grow the business. Unless you just want to do one job at a time with your crew, that’s cool too. I just like selling and installing gutters, all my roofing sub crews I trust 100% though and they do it all, tear off, repairs, shingles, dumping waste, and clean up. Thing is most subs in my area prefer working for businesses because they don’t like finding their own jobs.
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 5 жыл бұрын
They must pay well out there! And I disagree with that whole contractor thing, I sub in gutters and that's all and I'm upfront about it. If roofing contractors Said II'm hiring "this" company to do your job, right to a homeowner's face. They'd turn around n just have that company to do it. Plus, I don't get why a company would want to do roofs for 60 Bucks a square ish and work with whatever material you're given. When you can sell your own jobs for 260-320 a sq and material only cost 120 a sq. Dump is 350. You're lookin at double the money minimum

Worlds Fastest Shingler well pay is better, but roofs where I’m at are usually built a lot better than other parts of the country because we have to get them passed for TX Windstorm etc.. Almost all of the bigger guys in my city are roofing contractors. Have multiple Jobs going at the same time. I know this because the subs I use do work for some of them also. I don’t think it’s dishonest to be a contractor. No one expects your house to be built personally by the GC. I feel like as long as you know the difference between putting up a good roof and a bad one then you can do roofing. I’ve had homeowners ask if I do the work and I’ve been honest and said I don’t do it personally but that I manage the project daily and make sure it’s done correct. Never had a complaint.

@@abelrendon8956 for sure. I respect your standpoint on it n I appreciate the casual convo, everybody else is too shitty on here it makes my responses a little snappy sometimes so sorry if I come off that way. Just see it a little differently in this area. I'm mostly upset that "storm chasers" now run the business in my area. There's almost nobody that started from the bottom carrying bundles and became something. They land simple jobs Like roofing, or even a whole exterior makeover Like I'm in now, roofing, siding, soffit, fascia, gutters and window wraps. And they sub the whole thing out to one or more companies. Its kind of crazy. Like get your own employees you know? Its insane out here to have other companies call me n offer shit pay.Obviously you don't expect a g.c to do the work. I'm getting my g.c but its only because I don't want to take several different tests just to be able to pull permits for different types of interior and exterior work.
